Same. When people get cranky about insignificant changes is when stuff stops being fun.

Also, FIGWIT! YAY!

Is that Figwit? I remember there was a strange craze about him - didn't he only show up in one scene? Why was he special?

That is Figwit. And he came back in the...third(?) movie.

The love for him is less about him and more about how the intertubes created a character and the creators ran with it.

He didn't even have a line in FoTR (he was just some guy standing there at the council of Elrond when Frodo made the decision to take the Ring to Mordor, hence the name Figwit = Frodo Is Great Who Is That) but then there was a big craze Hi Mel! and PJ brought him back and gave him a line or two in RotK.
Oh and he's Bret McKenzie and therefore lovely.

Squee! Not that I've ever seen more than a few eps of FC, but still! :DDD

Seriously +1. I met Brett after a FotC concert and he is one of the nicest people (goes double for Jemaine).

Obligatory:

Then he comes back again for The Hobbit with a name - Lindir (that's a canon name too).

I thought everyone loved Figwit. That's why they brought him back.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Figwit, but I sort of hate the ugly Elvish name people gave him in fics.
Hasn't he been retconned into a book character now though?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, he's Lindir now.

That ugly Elvish name came from the movie team, and consists of smushing together the two different Elvish dialects. It does vaguely mean 'Figwit' though.

I don't even take part in Tolkien fandom and I avoid these people too, mostly because they're often really hostile if you disagree with them. Like, no, Tolkien fandom just ain't my thing, but I still love to talk about it with people and sometimes geek culture can make it really unpleasant.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was into Tolkien fandom when the first trilogy was coming out. I enjoyed discussing the movies and the books, but it just became so unpleasant that I ended up leaving shortly after ROTK was released.

I decided to peek in shortly before The Hobbit was released, saw the same sort of unpleasantness quickly left. I'll just enjoy the movies by myself.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, I'll avoid them even more if they kick up a stink about Tauriel yet not bat an eyelid at any of the numerous male movie only characters.

♥♥♥♥♥Bret McKenziiiieeee♥♥♥♥♥

And I agree. I love the canon, and I'm not on board for 100% of the changes between the books and movies, but I can also separate the two and enjoy the movies for what they are. For me, it's important to take the canon seriously, but also to allow myself to look at it critically as well. Sometimes the movie changes are good changes! I'm really excited about Tauriel - kickass lady elf, thank you that's all I ever wanted! - because as much as I love The Hobbit, wow, what a sausagefest.

Sometimes the movie changes are good changes!

This. "Boromir was killed by…some guy we didn't see" doesn't really work in a visual medium, and I like that they gave women more screen time.

Congrats!

You are doing it right.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I love Tolkien's books but I also love that PJ put a new Elven lady into the Hobbit movies. Purists must live very stressful lives. I almost feel sorry for them because no merch or spin-off or adaption EVER will not make them rage about something.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck gets mad about Lurtz and Lindir/Figwit?

I know there was some rabid speculation about Lurtz before FOTR was even out, but after? I have seen nothing.
vongroovy: ([lotr] tra-la-la lally)

[personal profile] vongroovy 2013-05-14 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen anyone angry about them online, but I used to hang out with a guy who just went off about how horrible Lurtz was one time when we were talking about the movies. So there's at least one dude out there burning up with rage over Lurtz. He was pretty much just in a constant state of nerd rage about one thing or another though which is why we used to hang out.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Looking back, I think it was mainly people who hated the idea of the movies at all and were looking to complain about as many things in them as possible.

I liked what PJ did with Arwen, because TBH no one except people in Sil fandom give two fucks about Glorfindel. But, um, what does Figwit actually do, vs what will Tauriel do? It's one thing to give a pretty major character a role in the film (Arwen had tons of investment in the quest, but Tolkien gave her next to no page time). Is she going to change the plot, or will she just be some random?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
This. I don't mind Figwit/Lindir because the role barely more than being an extra. But if Tauriel is going to play a significant part in the story and/or be a love interest, then I'm concerned.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, if they get up in arms about movie-only things and can't let others enjoy what they enjoy, yes, they ARE being jerks. And definitely to be avoided.
