Any embarrassing/funny/interesting work stories?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So, yesterday, I ended up bursting into tears at work. And it wasn't even for anything big. I was late for the first time in almost six months, but for some reason this sent me into a crying jag. The I felt like an idiot and got upset because I was crying. I got into that cycle of crying and not being able to stop for almost 15 minutes. One of my coworkers was nice and calmed me down, but I had the jitters for the rest of my shift because my emotions were all over the place.

I'm still all hyped up about it today, so anybody out there got some work stories they want to share? A little bit of schadenfreude would really cheer me up, ain't gonna lie.

You know how in the movies, a woman will go to the bathroom and then get the back/the end of her dress caught in the pantyhose and not realize it and then go back to work? Yup, it happened to me. Once and the first person to see it told me and I corrected it but so embarrassed.

This happened to me once at a tennis club... I went to the washroom and discovered that I'd started my period a day early, and only had a pantyliner on and didn't have my purse. Since I was wearing all-white, as per the club's rules, I was freaking out a little and just stuffed my underwear with lots of toilet paper and hurriedly went to find a friend who might have pads/tampons, and I was in such a rush that I didn't check my skirt, and yup, ran around a tennis club with skirt tucked into my panties. And said panties were kinda bulky at that point. THE JOY.

Thankfully I think the only person who noticed was the receptionist, and she was nice enough to let me know about it.

Something similar happened to me. I was in my early teens and I got my period at school and I didn't have any supplies. Since it was the end of the day, I just wadded a lot of toilet paper in my underwear and got on the school bus. When the bus got to my stop, I stood up. As I was walking down the aisle, I felt the wad of toilet paper fall out of the leg of my shorts. I didn't stick around to pick it up, or see what was on it, or if anyone had noticed, I just hurried off the bus and took off for home. At any rate no one ever mentioned it to me, so hopefully no one saw.

That happened to me at a job interview - my skirt must have already been rucked up when I entered, so all the interviewers must have seen it as I got and left. I didn't realise until I got home. I didn't get the job, ha.

This isn't my embarrassing story, but it makes me laugh.

It may involve shitting your pants at work.

I used to work in Ikea, okay? So one time this old Jewish woman came into the kitchen center and asked for cabinets. I asked all the proper questions like if she knew exactly what she wanted or if she had a certain look/color in mind, as well as information about sizes and so on, and she...

...well, she tried to explain it, I think, but her English was rusty so she pulled out a pad and a pen and drew a rectangle and kept on saying, "A cabinet! Like this!"

I kept on trying to explain that I needed more information but she kept on shoving the pad at me and insisting that all I needed to know was in that rectangle.

She stormed off in a huff after she told me she was going to contact a manager, and the moment she left my coworker and I just busted out laughing.

It was that or cry.

Fucking customer service.

I tucked my work uniform skirt into my underwear once, it took about five minutes of my supervisor making odd gestures and expressions at me before I realised that something was up. Thankfully I didn't give any customers a shock but still, letting everyone working with me that shift see what colour underwear I was wearing that day was pretty embarrassing.

A couple years ago I was at work, and somehow my pants ripped. It was in a really weird place (like in a straight line right under my butt) and the only thing I could figure is that I must've gotten them caught on something without realizing it. Anyway, for whatever reason I didn't notice until my boss pointed it out and I pretty much wanted to die. I ran to the bathroom to check the situation out and realized that you couldn't really see anything (I was wearing boy short-style underwear so there wasn't anything exposed except part of my upper thighs) but I was still pretty mortified. It was in such a weird place that there wasn't much I could do to fix it so I had to tie a sweater around my waist to hide it for the remaining few hours of my shift.

Luckily I can't think of anything worse that's happened to me at work.

I've burst into tears twice at work because somehow, two months in a row, my period's managed to start on days when work is more stressful than usual and I'm sleep-deprived. My hormones fucking hate me. The first time, a coworker tried (with good intentions, mind) to let me know that there were counseling services I could take advantage of, and I just snapped and told him it was biological. I think he might be afraid of me now >_>;

But yeah, don't feel bad about crying at work! At least you were able to pick yourself up enough to keep going! I cry at the drop of a hat and have a real hard time stopping for good. I can usually get myself to stop for the moment, but my mind likes to dwell on upsetting shit, so it's really difficult to not just burst out into tears again at the smallest provocation :/

Oh, and the other day, I managed to break 10 light fixtures in one fell swoop. I backed up into a stack of 2-pack ceiling mount fixtures, stacked eight high. Seven fell. Two survived. Glass everywhere. Luckily, nobody was hurt, and the coworkers that helped me clean it up were all good-natured about it ("That's why they're called accidents!"), but I was pretty shaken up for a little while.

Oh my god I also started crying at work last week. I've never done that before in my life, it was so mortifying. It technically was related to one of my co-workers and not the work itself though. I don't make a lot of noise when I cry, but for some reason the tears wouldn't stop coming out and I had to keep blowing my nose. I couldn't look any customers in the eye and hoped that they thought I had a cold. I managed to keep my voice from trembling but the congestion and the tears kept coming out. The co-worker in question said, "Don't cry, don't be sad." etc. and tried to cheer me up, which somehow kept provoking even more tears. I ended up crying all the way back home and that night, it was so stupid. I'd attribute it mostly to stress and self-doubt at the time.

I figured out what was bothering me and feel much better now, but I hate the fact that it happened at all especially in front of those people. Luckily I had a talk with that person and hopefully that resolved any lingering questions they may have had about what started it.
