but wouldn't those be pronounced and therefore written down totally differently? i mean not the r/l confusion. maybe it'd the non-native english speaker in me but re-vee and re-vey/borderline-re-vu-ye would be written differently in katakana. (also reveille seems like a french word/name to me and the first e would also be pronounced differently -- acute accent vs ... that other accent wtf is it called in english.) Am I... pronouncing the names wrong ? D:

1) you're in luck because "Levi" is canon! the author said he took the name from a person in a documentary film named "Levi", AND that's how it's translated in official translations like the licensed manga and on crunchyroll/funimation.

2) otoh the person in that documentary film named "Levi" was a kid at a Christian bible camp or something so I don't know how much this establishes the character as Jewish XD

I can't see him being Jewish for the same reason I can't see the others being Christian or any other religion: Those religions don't exactly exist in the series.
But yeah, his name is Levi. I don't get why so many people keep sticking with those weird names when it's actually not that difficult (and officially stated). Same with Bertholdt's last name. Everyone uses a different version.

Judaism is also a culture, it's not just a religion. You can be Jewish and be an atheist.
