What does anxiety feel like to you?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
My friends and I were discussing this and I was a bit surprised to discover that we experience anxiety very differently.

For friend #1, it feels as if her entire body is on fire and she can't breathe. She says she feels light-headed.

Friend #2 feels like there are invisible walls closing in on her. She also says it makes her feel heavy, like lead.

For me, I feel like I have ants under my skin and have a tendency to pull at/scratch it, sometimes to the point of bleeding. I literally feel like I'm going to burst out of my skin sometimes. It's a whole body thing, though the feelings are much intense towards my chest (I usually feel like I'm choking) and arms).

What about you guys? To those of you who have/have had anxiety issues, what does anxiety feel like to you?

Honestly? It's different in a lot of situations. I think I've experienced anxiety in each of the descriptions you gave.

A lot of the time it's like an overdose of adrenilin. I start shaking, if I don't focus on my breathing it will come in short pants, occasionally I get tunnel vision, I can't think straight through the chaos in my mind.

Other times it's like I'm walking on marshmallows or clouds or not quite touching the ground. This light headed detached feeling.

Other times it's a heavy feeling weighing me down. Sometimes my skin itches like you said and I just have this feeling that I want out out out of it. I scratch or rub at it.

I don't know. I experience a lot of different kinds of anxiety all bundled up into a general label.

For me, it's always diarrhea. The worse the anxiety, the longer it lasts and the more painful it is.

Closed in. And I get jittery and cranky. I went to a museum with my sister and her boyfriend. Six hours later I was super aggravated because I had been around too many people for too long.

It varies.

My mind goes blank at worst, at best, it's incredibly hard to think. It feels like my thoughts are fighting against something heavy and thick. Sometimes I feel detached from my body as well, as if I'm looking at the situation through a stranger's eyes, but other times I just feel like my body simply doesn't respond, while I'm flooded with panic.

The symptoms have gotten lighter and lighter as I've gotten better, though, to the point that I haven't had a full-on attack in like, a couple years, maybe? I can actually feel one incoming and then stop it and act more or less like a normal person. It is so awesome. C:

For me it's dizziness and feeling really hot. Heaviness is a thing with me too, along with wanting to throw up.

I get restless, my breathing gets shorter, I self harm (not cutting, more hair pulling, hitting my head, scratching myself or biting my hand), I can't think properly - things just go around and around in my head, and I usually end up in tears, then I sink into depression.

That sounds like my experience basically - the self harm stuff is usually just to break the cycle of my thoughts - I'll sometimes swear or yell out gibberish as well if I'm in a particularly bad place. When I'm feeling anxious in the moment the physical reactions will basically be feeling like my body is flushed with adrenalin meaning I can't actually talk to anyone or function because all I want to do is flee and hide in a corner til my heart stops beating. Which, honestly, is what usually happens :/

My skin goes alternately cold and hot, lightheaded but my body heavy, and my stomach feels like it's full poprocks. If it gets bad enough I vomit.

Every single thought in my head flies away, to be replaced by just about every worst case scenario I can come up with. It feels like my thoughts are crawling through mud, even though all the bad thoughts come faster than I can deal with or find solutions to. All the while my heart speeds up and I feel the instinctive need to kick out or strike out at something to get rid of so much excess energy.

I just... feel like I have no control. It's not even that hitting things like a little five year old is going to make me feel better, but it's the one solid thing that I feel capable of when I can't latch onto something that makes sense.

But for me, my anxiety comes on when I'm in an argument, and can't articulate what I want to say. I become a self fulfilling prophecy, freaking out about what I'm going to say wrong, while bottling up or stammering out non-sensical replies that just make people look at me like I'm nuts. And in those moments, I FEEL nuts because it's so damn hard to think logically.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what to do about it either. Aside from working on meditating and learning to breathe in those situations. I've been trying to do some cognitive behavior therapy with my thoughts, but IDK if it's helpful yet.

Ohh, the ants. You have my sympathies. The ants were what convinced me that it wasn't just plain old everyday stress and that something more was going on. Seriously, nothing like getting the DTs without having touched a drink or a joint in over six months.

And CBT? Well, that was just a six-hour long debate with persistent delusional ideation. No, delusions don't magically poof away never to be seen again like a boggart in a Harry Potter novel. In a good week, a reality check will swat them away for a few days. On a bad day, nothing to do but find a cozy corner with a bottle of water repeating, "that doesn't make any sense" like a fucking mantra until the pill kicks in to make the world taste less like Lovecraft, or I sleep it off.

For major attacks: my throat feels like its closing up, I feel hot, I have to keep popping my ears, my heart beats way too fast, I get the tingles, and I feel restless. Basically, I feel like I'm a step away from dying.

Minor: chest is tight, racing thoughts, I just need to lie down and let it all pass. Sleep is helpful or going on the web/play games to distract myself so it doesn't get full-blown.

Chest pain that feels real, like actual angina, shortness of breath

It almost always occurs when I am suppressing an emotion, but also in living situations where I live with people I don't want to be around (re: my stupid roommate and before that, my mother-in-law).

It varies. I've had that "wow I can hear and feel my heartbeat and that doesn't sound normal," which usually kicks the anxiety up a notch because it hurts and feels like a heart attack. Sometimes I have to go sit down/put my head between my knees because I feel dizzy and my vision starts to tunnel. But if it's a good day my voice just gets even higher and squeakier than usual and if I'm not supposed to move around a lot, like I'm giving a class presentation and I'll get points off for pacing/hand-wringing, I er--I sort of vibrate. It's weird, and it hasn't happened often because I've only recently got to a point where standing sort of still in front of an audience, and not running off to cry and throw up, was even an option. I actually thought something was going wrong with my vision again, because everything sort of blurred, until I sat down and people started giving feedback. My vision blurred because I was more or less buzzing in place, and it was as weird for other people to watch as it was for me to experience. When the adrenaline wore off I got the usual pounding heart and incipient migraine/urge to puke, but at least I didn't run away screaming and crying. I'm not diagnosed with anything/don't have insurance or meds, but I figure I'm better off than a lot of people because at least I can leave the house.

Like my chest has something stuck inside of it and almost every noise especially voices is enraging. The urge to scream and/or hit things is increasingly overwhelming. I am fortionate in that I have this weird threshold that too much of this will actually become funny to me which brings me out of it.

This. I just start screaming or shouting random shit sometimes. As for hitting...sometimes it's whatever's near, and sometimes it's myself. Depends on various things.

Thanks for sharing. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who has outbursts like this. Most of the people I've discussed anxiety claimed that they'd never felt that way, so...

I get the urge to hit things too. I've hit furniture, and I've slapped myself pretty hard. Not proud of it, but glad to know I'm not making up weird excuses to attach those reactions to my anxiety. I really wish I didn't automatically jump to them as a way to deal.

I feel really hot or really cold, or more often flashes of both. I get tunnel vision. I feel really nauseous. A lot of the time I feel like words or a scream is trapped in my trapped in my throat. My shoulders feel tight. I feel too big and too small for my body. I just feel really light, like I've stopped existing for half a second or like I'm no longer standing on the ground.

Only once have I had a full on panic attack, with the hyperventilating and such, but that was nearly ten years ago. Didn't realize what it was until recently. Did realize what any of this was until recently.

Mine is really bad chest pain. It was there for a year or so, just chilling out almost constantly unless I actually felt stressed? I thought maybe I had a heart or lung problem but I was too scared to ask. Then I went to my doctor and showed him the list of symptoms I made and I started crying and he said it was anxiety and I got some pills and now I generally feel like a normal person.

SO YEAH CHEST PAIN. That's not one I usually hear about, but based on this thread, I'm not alone.
