Right, because autistics can't ever do anything cool/badass (or anything, in general) like normal people.

It's really sad that you automatically decide you'd make yourself a martyr by sacrificing something awesome, instead of thinking that maybe your brother could do something awesome, too.

Many autistic people CAN'T do anything cool/badass. Sure, MAYBE the OP is neurotypical ableist scum who's keeping the handi-capable down with their bigotry. Or maybe - and this is a little weird, but follow me - MAYBE they know more about their brother's situation than you do, and are in a position to say that he wouldn't be allowed to use magic even IF he was born with it because it would be a safety risk to himself and others.

Just a thought~

nah, I'm pretty sure her brother knows a lot more about what he's capable of than his allistic sister does, but thanks for the input. Bonus points for the "violent autistic kid" stereotype.

this

My cousin has severe autism (as in he's low functioning, wears diapers and a helmet so he won't hurt himself and will never be able to live by himself). OP's brother may be similar. I'm glad people on the internet are trying to bring awareness to people with autism but I feel like low-functioning autistics are pretty much being swept under the rug by a lot of them. I know some people who won't even acknowledge that there are low functioning autistics, as if they're an embarrassment to other people on the spectrum. It's a bit frustrating sometimes. Not saying that the person you're responding to is doing that by any means, but I guess I got off track

I'm really not interested in a dozen allistic people telling me how their autistic family members are completely helpless and useless, thanks.

(And people "sweep low-functioning autistics under the rug" because they really don't exist, at least not the way allistics see them.)

You have GOT to be trolling right now.

Wow, go fuck yourself. I never said my cousin was useless. He's a wonderful, friendly boy and we all love him dearly. But that doesn't change the fact that he needs constant care and he does, unfortunately, occasionally have violent mood swings. This is the reality for some people with autism. I'm sorry his existence offends you for some reason.

I am incapable of living on my own. I need to be prompted to eat, to sleep, to perform basic hygiene tasks, because otherwise I would forget completely. I'm not always capable of communicating verbally, and I lashed out in anger quite frequently when I was younger.

I'm not offended by my own existence. I'm offended by the way you've decided what I, and people like me, can and can't accomplish.

Great! You are a success story. I guess you get to dictate what every other person with autism can do! Are you the queen or king of all people with autism?

Yes, you're an high-functioning autistic person, we get it. However, that does not give you the right to speak for everyone with an ASD. I have met many, many people with autism because of I actually have THREE family members who are autistic (and as such we're part of the ASD community), and none of them are HFAs.

It's great that you have such pride in your disorder, okay? But you need to open your eyes and realize that no everyone is as privileged as you are, and not everyone sees it that way.

OMG, just shut up, seriously. You're trying to be all properly PC, we get it, but fact of the matter is that you have no idea what the heck you're talking about. My cousin is autistic, and as much as I love her to bits, I wouldn't let her anywhere near a wand (if we had wands, that is). Clearly the only people with autism you hear about are the high "functioning" ones who an properly blend into society, make friends, hold jobs, etc.

Newsflash: that isn't the the majority. My cousin can't walk and can't speak. She wears a diaper and is wheelchair bound. She's a sweetheart, but she has awful temper tantrums and is often emotionally unstable. She's an amazing woman and I love her dearly, but facts are facts.

My sister used to work at a school for children with special needs, and I use to meet a lot of autistic children on "bring your child to work day" and such. There were a few of them capable of blending in, but many of them were like my cousin.

So please stop speaking about things you're ignorant of.

Hi. I'm "low-functioning" autistic. I can't always communicate verbally (and doing so is really, really hard), can't live independently, and used to lash out violently at my caregivers. I sure as hell don't "properly blend into society".

Please stop speaking about things you're ignorant of.

Pretty much this. OP stopped short of directly pulling the martyr card, but it still reeks of an inflated sense of self-importance.

Uhhhhh. You do know there are different degrees of autism, right? My neice has autism and will never be able to live on her own and would become very distraught if her sister left her.

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Not being able to live alone wouldn't keep someone from being able to perform magic. Neither would being "low-functioning"/nonverbal.

Don't Harry Potter spells require speaking?

What if her brother can't do well with any manner of things that children with autism sometimes suffer from? You don't know, so you can't really judge her opinion.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] baxaronn 2013-05-24 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nonverbal magic is considered an advanced skill, but wizard children often do it naturally. It's entirely possible that a nonverbal wizard would be able to do nonverbal magic early, if speaking wasn't an option.

I don't think all the spells require speaking. In fact, not all spells even require intent (I'm thinking of when Harry's wand moved on it's own at the beginning of Deathly Hallows.)

Autism runs in my family (My father and I are both Aspies, and my brother is fairly low-functioning), since people are apparently talking about it.
