(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)Perhaps only tangentially related to OP's post, but I really hate hyper-realistic digital character paintings that are lifted directly from screecaps, especially when people praise the bajeezus out of them. I mean... hello? Have you never seen an overpaint before?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)So yeah, I don't understand why people freak out over those studies, it takes some skill, but so can really abstract or cartoony work that a person largely made from their imagination. Sometimes I do screencap studies just to rest my mind because drawing directly from reference can be easier then drawing from multiple references and trying to make something up.

if you mean using photos as reference, then i don't see what's the issue with that. it takes a lot of skill to be able to recreate a photo, nevermind that references are something that artists have used for centuries, it's not "cheating".

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)It's lacking variation in colour, but it's not bad. It just seems a little... boring.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 04:19 am (UTC)(link)depending on how young the artist is, I'd say it's pretty typical though of people just starting out in painting. they need a course in adding color to their highlights and shadows, and lessons in how skin absorbs light asap. unfortunately these are all things that run contrary to just clone tooling colors from a screengrab to paint, which just from this one piece appears to be what s/he is doing.
