And I guess by artstyle you mean overpainting a photo?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
YEP

Perhaps only tangentially related to OP's post, but I really hate hyper-realistic digital character paintings that are lifted directly from screecaps, especially when people praise the bajeezus out of them. I mean... hello? Have you never seen an overpaint before?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. Maybe you can admire the technical skill involved, but those paintings are basically just glorified copies that have very little imagination.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay for artist to do those things for practice sake (it's actually a really good exercise) but I prefer something with more imagination when someone is doing a full blown illustration, even if that means the realism suffers a bit.

So yeah, I don't understand why people freak out over those studies, it takes some skill, but so can really abstract or cartoony work that a person largely made from their imagination. Sometimes I do screencap studies just to rest my mind because drawing directly from reference can be easier then drawing from multiple references and trying to make something up.

"lifted directly"

if you mean using photos as reference, then i don't see what's the issue with that. it takes a lot of skill to be able to recreate a photo, nevermind that references are something that artists have used for centuries, it's not "cheating".

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as long as they're not actually tracing it does take a lot of skill to draw accurately from references. Which is something a lot of whiny brats of tumblr don't seem to get.

If by that you mean INCOMPETENT overpainting, then sure.

Is that what that is? I thought it was some kind of Poser image. Weird.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Good lord, that's some horrible dodge + burn shading. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What exactly are we looking at, OP?

It's lacking variation in colour, but it's not bad. It just seems a little... boring.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
IDK man I got totally Uncanny Valley-d by that image.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not quite there in the Valley, but that is one fugly image. My cat can do it better than that.

It's pretty plastic-y and dead-looking, which is easy to do when you overuse things like the Photoshop smudge tool.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I've seen so many "artists" who do this. They overdraw a photo. Put some paint down (or sometimes just blur the original photo) and then go crazy with the burn tool.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
A learning artist overpainting or heavily reffing a source? Potentially using burn? Probably following a quick-paint tutorial and finished it halfway as it looks like a WIP?

specifics anon!

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is a portrait. Ummm, that isn't a WIP. ALL of her art looks like that. I mean, she thinks they are good and she gets commisions, sooo. Maybe it is just me?

da

not just you, it is terribly unimaginative! i don't know about ugly, but it is boring (to me, at least)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's not just you, it looks like melted plastic.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
wow that is pretty bad, the shading is so lifeless.

depending on how young the artist is, I'd say it's pretty typical though of people just starting out in painting. they need a course in adding color to their highlights and shadows, and lessons in how skin absorbs light asap. unfortunately these are all things that run contrary to just clone tooling colors from a screengrab to paint, which just from this one piece appears to be what s/he is doing.

But how is this fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanart.

[personal profile] bored_bitch 2013-05-26 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But this is just a general style of painting.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess if you have access to photoshop or whatever, everyone can be a artist! The same way most fanfic writers fancy themselves as true writers when all they do is put out, at best, mildly entertaining work.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no accounting for taste, I suppose.
