I don't understand what you're saying you're doing. You design practical outfits, then throw them out and use sexy ones instead? You design practical outfits AND sexy ones?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
From the pics, it looks like the clothes are a separate layer, so they just hide the practical design and draw their fun/sexy design for kicks.

Which, hey, that sort of style is meant to be appealing, so I don't really fault the OP for it.

I make the practical ones to actually use in the games and then I keep my racier ones privately. Sorry it wasn't clearer.

ayrt

Well, in that case, I don't see anything whatsoever wrong with it.

So, do you secretly like drawing sexy outfits more, or do you just think people will appreciate them more?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Basically I make the racier ones for... baser purposes for myself. And I feel guilty as shit because that's part of the problem, isn't it?

I think you're fine, OP. We generally don't choose what we get off on, and girls in sexy costumes isn't even all that unusual.

If you mean you keep the practical outfit in story for the sake of characterization, and then make the sexy outfit as something fun and aside, there's nothing wrong with that.

So you like to play with "sexy" outfits?
So what?

OP

I just feel like I'm playing into the male-gaze culture and doing it wrong when I can't fap to my practical ladies. Instead I have to make them look completely over the top sexpot and that's something I am conflicted about. I'm kind of regretting making this now because apparently it doesn't make sense or isn't a big deal and I don't know. I just feel bad about doing it but I still find myself doing it.

That sounds fun- and if you like doing that, then you shouldn't worry about what other people think.

On an unrelated note, I would be quite happy to never see the phrase "bad feminist" again, ever.

Probably unrelated, but I've always really liked the look of boob armor, or whatever you want to call it. I like seeing more practical armor on women too, but for me, it depends on the context and the setting of the world the characters are in, I mean, I also like all those early 80s male barbarians running around in loincloths and boots which is pretty impractical. There's this pinball machine at my favorite arcade here called GORGOTH with a male barbarian type dude on the backboard and he looks to be wearing nothing at all aside from a helmet and maybe some sandals or footwear? IDK I'm amused and entertained by that. And speaking in D&D terms if someone has a really high armor class naturally (through magical means or otherwise) they don't really need that much armor.

I also prefer some of the classic superheroine outfits to the politically correct one (I saw a Wonder Woman redesign a fan did that gave her these non-form fitting pants and all I could think about is how uncomfortable that would be to move around in if I was trying to kick someone in the face or something). I don't get why gymnasts and wrestlers are allowed to wear skin tight, flexible garments that allow movement but female superheroes can't? I get the annoyance people have with too much cleavage and ridiculous body types where certain body parts are needlessly enhanced, and dumb footwear (this annoys me the most), but some of the criticisms I see of the outfits makes me facepalm in a major way

Whoops, it was called GORGAR. Apparently everyone in the late 70s was naked?

I mean, I have no problem with practical breast plates. I feel like Xena's, for example, works well enough. I don't mind a defined cup area because that seems like it would hold the breast better to keep it from slipping free or anything during combat. In the example there, the character is an archer who often climbs trees or works from horseback so her armor is leather as to be lighter weight.

The main problem I have with boob armor is metal boob armor that creates a point going inwards towards the sternum. Concentrating force there is a bad, bad idea.

But a leather battle bikini or whatever? Uh, sure! If you want! I guess if you have larger breasts, it's easier to fight mostly naked with some kind of bra support rather than fully naked with them bouncing around everywhere. So it's a fair equivalent to DUDE JUST WEARS LOINCLOTH AND BODYPAINT.

I wonder if there's a male equivalent issue. Like, testicle support in armor that doesn't focus pressure on the perineum. Inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah, I've never had that much problems with boob armor in general either. Sure, they can get stupid and silly to be more sexy. But it help make characters different. Hell, it would be more detrimental for someone who relies on their speed and skill to lug around a full plate of armor. Or the clothing (including armor) may be designed to be more visually appealing rather than practical. Not all outfits have to be practical.

It depends on the story, it's tone, and it's setting. Sometimes I feel people who have no idea how character design works make the issue too black and white.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing. I try to make my characters real outfits as practical and realistic for the setting as possible. Then I go and draw up their 'what if this character was a stripper' outfit just for fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
You could cut open a leg artery pretty easily even in the green one.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
she's an archer so she's not for melee combat, but yeah, I have a hard time conceiving leg armor that is practical for mounting and dismounting a horse while still protecting bits. Her pants are a thicker leather with reinforced patches, but honestly, a sword would probably be bad news for her at any rate.

YOU CAN DO BOTH FFS

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Liking sexy things does NOT automatically make you a bad feminist. I love sexy outfits. Sometimes I want to play the character in the chain mail bikini. The point is to have more choices than just sexy outfits, and that's exactly what you're doing. Don't beat yourself up for having fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
What game is this?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough, I find the outfit on the left sexy myself. I think it's the gloves

Also, there's nothing wrong with designing the 'sexy' less-clothed outfits for your own viewing pleasure. I mean, really, is there a rule that says feminists aren't allowed to enjoy sexy things? The feminist issue with lingerie/boob armour is when female characters are designed like that in actual games, making the character's first function fap fodder, and second function character. And you seem to get that

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Super sexy outfits are only a problem when they're the only option available. I don't think there's anything wrong with anyone, male or female, choosing sexy outfits for their characters, even if the primary purpose is sexual.

I'm a gay male who has some appreciation for pretty women. I like making sexy, racy outfits for both men and women. It's fun. I like making all sorts of outfits for my characters.

FYI: If anyone remembers, long ago I made the secret about the shirtless-male ginger bodybuilder avatars. I still do that. They're AWESOME.
