I don't understand this thing people have with telling people that they "should" read more.

It's good to be literate.
It's good to know what's going on.

But reading isn't the only way to accomplish these things.

I don't go around telling others to "PLEASE PLAY MORE VIDEO GAMES." just because I like them.
I really wish people would pull their heads out of their asses about the pedestal they've placed literature upon.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
you don't??

i am very disappointed in you how are we going to convert people to our most sacrosanct of activities and media consumption

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking about your comment made me realize that I pretty much spend all day reading. I sit in front of a screen and read and read and read. It's just that most of what I read these days isn't books.

But all these internet denizens are just so illiterate because they don't read many novels. Right.

Studies show that kids who read more are statistically more likely to succeed in school. My vocabulary wouldn't be as diverse if I wasn't such a voracious reader. Video games are a different beast, but lbr, literature deserves to be placed on a pedestal.

That's funny, because I was acing school until heavy depression and anxiety set in.
Even English class.
And I hate reading novels. HATE.

People can learn by different means.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
i think that's probably what the op means: it's great to encourage people to read the books, but it's kind of a shitty thing to throw it in their faces, especially in fandom where there's a kind of elitism between "book fans" vs. "tv fans" which i think is what the op meant to distinguish

but i'm not sure that the second part of their animation was actually doing that, and i don't really know the full context enough to judge on my own

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because reading novels* is a really good way to gain a more diverse vocabulary, explore different view points, time periods, and general concepts while exercising you're imagination to a greater extent than visual media? Plus the publishing industry is dying because people aren't reading? An added bonus is that you can learn something about writing from reading novels as well.

The way the video is saying 'READ NOW' is wrong. It shouldn't be shoved in people's faces but...at the same time? People shouldn't be condemned for suggesting that "Hey, you might want to check out the books - they're awesome!"

Also, bring literacy isn't necessarily the best of arguments since, at least in my country [which is 1st world], there is a pretty large part of the younger population that is functioning at barely literate.

*I don't specifically mean classic lit here

You can do all of these things through different mediums, though.
My vocabulary, for instance, expanded a lot when I played the Legacy of Kain series of games, among others.
You can explore history through videos. You can explore viewpoints through pretty much anything.
You can stretch your imagination through art.

I've done all of these things, and I still don't see the big deal about reading novels, in particular. There are other sources that give the same benefits.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Don't think any of them do it as well as books.

Imagination, maybe.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because people tell others that they should read more often just because they like books a lot and not anything the part where we're a literate society who use written words for a majority of our information transmission, and reading is proven to facilitate easier understanding from vocabulary to empathy.

[personal profile] bored_bitch 2013-06-01 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because people can't possibly do these things through other means. There is no other way.
If I don't read the Lord of the Rings, how EVER shall I learn the difference between "your" and "you're", or how to look at things through other viewpoints?
It can't be done.
Nope.
Nuh-uh.
U r screwd.

Yes, because there aren't a million ways to get reading things outside of books. I love books but this is just sort of pretentious rlly.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretentious and backed by studies oops. There are lots of ways to read, but reading books is still the easiest and most comprehensive way to learn the skill. If bored_bitch hates that way fine, but its still a relevant reason why others think non-fiction and literature are important beyond mere liking it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not really a good reason for people to be pretentious asshats either, though

encouragement is good, but i also see so many people act superior and condescending about the whole issue, which seems backwards to me: if you want more people to read, it's probably a good idea to not look down on people who simply haven't or don't want to

and so many methods of "READ A FUCKING BOOK!!" seem more like they would make people feel ashamed or feel bad about themselves, because feeling judged is hardly something that inspires people

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
All things I totally agree with, anon. I never meant my comment to come off as judgemental for nor reading, but to point out to the commenter who stated of the debate with heads in asses that, yes, there are good reasons for reading beyond enjoyment and that's why it's on a pedestal. So if it came off that way, my bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't go around telling others to "PLEASE PLAY MORE VIDEO GAMES." just because I like them.

You must not like them that much if you're not excited to share them.
bored_bitch: (Lunaii_self)

[personal profile] bored_bitch 2013-06-01 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Correction: I don't act like a snotty, intellectually superior shit if they have no interest in the medium as a whole.

And why would I tell other people to get into something just because I like it? I'm not trying to win their validation for my personal interests.

There's a vast difference between "Hey! This game is so cool! I love it! It has a great story! You might be interested!" and "FUCKING PLAY MORE VIDEO GAMES!".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's a lot of good stuff out there that nobody's made a tv special about.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think reading more novels doesn't do the trick, but reading more -period- is never wrong. My brother doesn't even bother to read the dialogue in his video games because "eww yuck reading's hard work".
He's 22 and his spelling is a catastrophe.
He wasn't even able to write job applications without making a few glaring mistakes even though he used spell-check.

No, he doesn't have a condition. He just never ever liked to read stuff.
