(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)while both are snobbish/hipsterish, the first encourages others to read the books, or just books in general; the second just flaunts their old-fan-ness

It's good to be literate.
It's good to know what's going on.
But reading isn't the only way to accomplish these things.
I don't go around telling others to "PLEASE PLAY MORE VIDEO GAMES." just because I like them.
I really wish people would pull their heads out of their asses about the pedestal they've placed literature upon.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)i am very disappointed in you how are we going to convert people to our most sacrosanct of activities and media consumption

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)But all these internet denizens are just so illiterate because they don't read many novels. Right.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)but i'm not sure that the second part of their animation was actually doing that, and i don't really know the full context enough to judge on my own

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)The way the video is saying 'READ NOW' is wrong. It shouldn't be shoved in people's faces but...at the same time? People shouldn't be condemned for suggesting that "Hey, you might want to check out the books - they're awesome!"
Also, bring literacy isn't necessarily the best of arguments since, at least in my country [which is 1st world], there is a pretty large part of the younger population that is functioning at barely literate.
*I don't specifically mean classic lit here

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)He's 22 and his spelling is a catastrophe.
He wasn't even able to write job applications without making a few glaring mistakes even though he used spell-check.
No, he doesn't have a condition. He just never ever liked to read stuff.

But this was a shitty way to say it

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)I read a lot. I watched the first two seasons of the GoT series. I have no intention of reading the books. None at all. They bore me to tears.
I get the "it's been available for a long time, nobody considers it spoilers anymore" sentiment. Especially in cases like The Hobbit, where the source material is only a pretty short children's book and it's been a classic for a long time. ASoIaF takes much more time to read and, compared with LotR an The Hobbit, hasn't been around for nearly that long - especially in the case of the latest book in the series.
I'm not part of this particular fandom but it sucks having to avoid a fandom just because some people can't be arsed to put up a simple spoiler warning.
Don't pretend it's rocket science or too much to ask. It's really not that hard and only antagonistic hipster fuckers do it because they like to annoy people.

And I don't need some guy yelling "READ THE DAMN BOOK!" at me,
