In all fairness, I don't get it when people are annoyed by Jar Jar but are in love with Chewbacca. They are very similar role- and character-wise, although of course the latter is less awkward and ridiculous.

(and I love them both)

Jar Jar is much more awkward and ridiculous. And I think he plays a much, much, MUCH more prominent role in Phantom Menace than Chewbacca does in any of the original movies. I mean, Chewie is mostly just a big hairy guy in the background - he's there, but he's distinctly a side character. Whereas Jar Jar is pretty significant to the plot of Phantom Menace and has a lot more business.

Aw, I see. Yes, I think it could be a major problem if Chewbacca was the central character of, say, Return of the Jedi. It would probably make the series somewhat idiotic, if in a good way.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, I would enjoy the hell out of Chewie killing Palpatine in Jedi, but it would be kind of dumb.

You just answered your own question, actually.

Yeah, you're probably right. I just thought that it was unlikely to be a matter of degree. The difference is not that glaring.

Also the anon above made a good point.

Chewbacca isn't some kind of bizarre racial stereotype

Unless you live in a very odd part of the world where people just yell and wear purses instead of clothing and enjoy the work of Bea Arthur and Jefferson Starship.

Whereas the Gungans... yeah.

Very true; I'm not some big Chewbacca fan, but he's WAY more preferable than Jar Jar in terms of not being a racial stereotype.

I'm not very up to speed on my racial stereotypes. Which one is Jarjar exactly?

Uh.

Alright.

I'll take your word for it.

I grew up with the dubbed movie, so our Jar Jar didn't have the accent. He just mispronounced some words and made up some others.
When I discovered the internet I was shocked to see the many articles on him being racially insensitive. I really loved him as a kid and I still have a soft spot for him.
I even had an action figure of him :(

Oh Jar Jar, everyone hates you but me~

Ahahaha. Thank you for that.

Chewie wasn't as superfluous. He was rarely the focus of a scene, and when he was (like finding C-3P0 in pieces) there was a point to it. A lot of Jar Jar's scenes could be cut out without harming the story. Plus, he was pandering to a much more base kind of humor.

I'd have to disagree about them sharing similar roles. By meeting Jar Jar, Obiwan and Quigon meet the Gungans, who turn out to be an important faction who help turn the tide of the invasion. Thing is, this is where Jar Jar's role ends and yet he's still around for the entire film, and then the sequels. You could argue that he's comedy relief, but there's more than enough nuggets of humour throughout the prequels that you don't need a dedicated comedy role.

Chewbecca's role is different. He's primarily Han Solo's friend, which humanizes him a lot. Han Solo is a selfish jerk at the start of the trilogy and would seem a lot more so if he was alone, but he isn't; he has a best friend that he would die for and Chewie for him. It serves as an important hint that Han Solo really is a decent guy deep down.

And like others said, Chewie is a side-character who acts as the muscle, and therefore serves a purpose in all the films. Jar Jar not so much.
