Songs with lyrics you hate but tunes you like (or vice versa)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, what it says in the subject line. Name either a song that you think sounds beautiful/catchy, but has lyrics that you dislike for whatever reason. Or name a song whose lyrics you really like, but has a tune you find ugly or grating or dull.

"Moves Like Jagger"... I love the tune, but the lyrics... d-: That's why I'm glad I found a parody I like; I can have the tune with better lyrics. (-:

Yup...that song is pretty pointless. And for some reason I think having the title be "Moves of Jagger" makes more sense.

The Hold Steady (all songs)

I like their whole musical deal, but their lyrics are so dumb and their lead singer is not great at singing them and it's just impossible for me to take them seriously

Like....half of Emilie Autumn's music. I either love the music/hate the lyrics or love the lyrics/hate the music.

Ditto, but only the newer stuff.

I want to like the FLAG album, but the catchy tunes don't hide the stupid well enough.

"Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner" by The Dresden Dolls.

The title of the song should make this self-explanatory.

"Don't Be A Girl About It" by Kelly Clarkson, which is so damn catchy but the feminist in me really doesn't like it (although I've actually taken to interpreting it as an ironic song to/about a sexist ass of an ex who would take exceptional offense at being compared to a girl in any way whatsoever).

Also, "Heart of a Lonely Girl" by Dierks Bentley, because "a woman ain't pretty if a man ain't there" what bullshit is this, but damn if it's not the catchiest song on that album.

*has lots of feministy ragey feelings*

Adding on to the feminist ragey feelings is the discomfort from "She's A Lady". I know it's an old song, but I can't help but cringe at the line "And she knows her place".

Well, then we should probably add Keith Urban to the "feminist rage catchy song" pile. "You'll Think of Me" and "I Told You So" infuriate me beyond belief, even as break-up songs, but I still listen to them whenever they come on the radio. :/

On that note, Gimme Gimme Gimme.

"Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight, won't somebody help me chase the shadows away?"

Fuck, just get a vibrator and a flashlight!

Anything Gaga and some of Katy Perry's stuff.
I have to turn my brain off for them, but damn are they fucking catchy.

Same. To be fair, most of Lady Gaga's songs are more for dancing than for karaoke.

Sekaiichi Happy na Onna no Ko - C-ute (yeah ok it's JPop)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzLu-ZbiJus

The song's so upbeat and, well, happy, and I really want the lyrics to fit that, but no the lyrics are about chasing after a guy who's a player/unavailable, and wanting to become the happiest girl in the world (because of that?). *sigh*

Sue me, it's catchy as fuck.

If I were to make a playlist about narcissism, this song and Pussycat Doll's "Don't Cha" will be on the tracklist.

The Script's "The Man That Can't Be Moved". Initially I thought it's a sweet song, then I realized the co-dependent implications and the likelihood that the song's speaker will most likely be placed in an asylum by the end of the song o.o

The band's "Break Even" sounds decent, but I find the lyrics to be excessively whiny. Most people I know love this band unironically so this is an unpopular opinion.

I disagree on "Breakeven," but am totally with you on "Man Who Can't Be Moved"

Just about everything by Jason Mraz. And I also like Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne.

All Eminem songs. Love the beats almost to a one, but I've long lost the ability to ignore the lyrical content in favor of a great hook.

Within Temptation - It's the Fear

lovely tunes, negative lyrics far too associated in my mind with depressing times

In my angry teenager days, I listened to Anti-Flag. But it got to the point where I couldn't ignore the fact that while I loved their lyrics and agree with their messages, their singer is absolute shit. And apparently on purpose, because he's had moments where he doesn't do that gravely "angry garage band" voice and I just...I had to stop.

On the flip side, I'd love to still be able to listen to Linkin Park without cringing at my past self, because I love the sound, but...dudes, lighten up a bit, will you? (Again: perfect music for an angry teenager; not so much for a comparatively content adult.)

And then there's "Everything You Want," which would be an absolutely lovely song, if it weren't for the lyrical "twist" near the end that turns the whole thing into a Nice Guy's "WHY WON'T YOU LOVE MEEEEE" song =_____=

And Ke$ha, I love the hell out of your music, but "Grow a Pear" was really not called for. That could've been a funny wordplay song, but you went literal with it and got gross. Stop that.

Just started listening to this CD, and I really like "Remix (I Like The)" from the new New Kids on the Block album , because it's so catchy and dance-able, but then it gets kind of objectifying, verging on misogynistic in places, and I like it less.

There are so many songs I've thought this about, but frustratingly enough the only one that comes to mind is Frontside Ollie by Robin...it's in a foreign language to me so I can kind of ignore it, but the lyrics are seriously about a girl doing a cool skateboard move. it's just so...young.
