how to shake off a bad mood?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been feeling a low grade mix of anxiety, depression, anger at myself, and general negativity all day. It's just been sitting there under my skin making me antsy and unhappy. It's to the point where I can feel it building and if it were a year ago this is the point where I'd probably be hurting myself in some way. But I don't allow myself that outlet anymore and I'm honestly not sure what to do with this negative energy.

I've tried exercise and distraction and neither have worked. Anyone have any suggestions or just feel like sharing their own coping strategies?

- Take a bath or a shower. Concentrate on the water and work on relaxing your muscles, eyes closed. Put music on and listen to it, try to concentrate on the lyrics but not on what you're thinking.

- Write your thoughts down on a piece of paper and rip it up if you need to. Repeat until you no longer want to.

- Treat yourself: get something you like to eat or drink, and watch or read your favorite media.

- Call someone who cares about you, to talk about it or something else.

- Flash games or TV shows. Something that'll take you mind off things, because you'll be concentrated on something else. Anything, nature documentaries, talk-shows...

Good luck, OP! I hope you'll feel better soon.

Congrats on not hurting yourself! That is a major accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourself.

Music is the most effective pick me up I've found. I turn it way up and sing and dance along. I just make sure there aren't any witnesses because I can't sing or dance.

I hope you feel better soon!
manifold: Mistakes are proof that you are trying. (mistakes)

At that point, I tend to marathon video games. A lot of the things that can distract me when I'm not at my worst (reading, watching TV or movies, etc.) are just too passive to work in the worst of the worst, so I really have to get down and Distract Myself With An Activity. And video games are a pretty low-barrier activity—they don't require another person, they tend to require most of my attention... I can end up in The Zone with a game pretty easily even if I'm doing shitty. (And if I'm too tired for a game, hopefully I'm too tired to do anything but go to bed and pass out.)

I really have no idea how I'd handle depression or anxiety without video games as distraction. I'd... probably need a lot more medication.

Try to do something nice for someone who deserves it. Extra points if it's for someone who doesn't ordinarily get any recognition and if you can do it anonymously and uh, without freaking them out.

And then do something nice for yourself that you wouldn't ordinarily indulge in.
