I am continually annoyed they didn't show any real reaction from Athelstan to (spoiler if you haven't seen the series so far, I guess? It's late-mid season)...being offered up by Ragnar as a sacrifice.

I mean, I half-suspect Ragnar had to know Athelstan wouldn't actually agree and one of his own men would volunteer in his place (no, seriously, I totally think he expected that to happen because he saw what-his-name (Leif?) as a possible rival) but still. Athelstan had to feel betrayed, right? And they didn't even show any of that.

Then again, they skip time weirdly without really telling you how much time has passed (except by telling how much hair Athelstan has at any given time, I guess, LOL) but I still love the show anyway...so there's that.

And Lagertha seriously needs to just rule everything.

don't even get me started on how they handled that mess :\ By the end of the series Athelstan (who had previously been a very well-formed character with whom the audience could sympathize) had become a complete cipher whose feelings about anything were presented vaguely at best or not at all. In the span of a single episode (8, the sacrifice one) he: denied his god three times; was set up by a man he trusted as a sacrifice without his knowledge; and lost his virginity (established previously as a huuuuge deal for him). NONE of those things were ever referenced again. In fact he had two lines in the next episode and spent the entire thing dying of a fever.
Episode 8 could actually be ignored except for the meeting with King Horik, and you wouldn't feel like you missed anything.

So yeah, I'm a little bit miffed by that -_- I love the show, but I hope they slow the hell down for season 2 and actually show us the characters' reactions to the events that happen, or the events have no meaning.

Exactly. I don't know if they rushed things because they didn't know if they were actually going to get to do more (I've felt that way for a couple of episodes of Hannibal, actually, too) or what...but it just felt like "a few minutes here, now back to here, now over here, now show Rollo maybe almost betraying Ragnar AGAIN, now show Athelstan looking like a kicked puppy, now show Lagertha being badass, now show Ragnar with his eyes glowing..." Uh. You get the idea. They didn't settle enough on anything to really get your teeth into it and make it feel like it mattered at all. Really, it was better before the episode where Ragnar became Earl, I think.

Just rambling at you, sorry.

I did like Floki's reaction to Rollo getting baptised though, I must say. Though if I'm being honest, I like Floki's everything.

now that you mention Hannibal, I actually agree. Will's careening over the edge at a much faster pace these days, and they aren't being as attentive to minor characters as they were at the start. That's why you shouldn't wait so late to make decisions about renewals, especially for these teeny tiny series! Grr...

I think the fandom as a whole agrees that Ragnar becoming Earl is about where the show went off the tracks, and the pacing and characterization just got worse with each passing episode. I really hope they can straighten it out next season. They have a loyal fanbase, they need to get back to making a show that makes emotional sense.

Floki remained flawless through the end of the season, no doubt about that!

Yeah. Part of me can be okay with Will's going over the edge, though. He's seriously ill beyond just the slightly-off-asperger's-and-empathy-magic thing and nobody is actually helping him (though I'm hoping now that he's in the hospital, that can start to get medically straightened out) and some people (cough-cough-Hannibal-cough) are actively prodding him to see how he'll tick. I mean, I've had some minor issues with neurological shit and it freaks me out. I can only imagine what it would be like in Will's shoes so honestly...that makes sense to me. Because there's a physical problem making his psychological issues with putting himself in the shoes of murderers even worse.

And that reminds me I wanted to ramble on about Hannibal on tumblr or something to get some various meta-thoughts out of my head. Woo. :)

And yeah, Ragnar becoming Earl is where it started to get really...odd.

He had me from the moment he showed up, to be honest...but then...I've always been fond of that character type.

I just watched this show and had the exact same feelings. To be honest, I don't think the show is ... very good, but I mean that in a way where I love and enjoyed it. The script is weak, and the storytelling is weak. I love the characters, though - at least, the leads, because the first villain did nothing for me - but yeah, there were too many moments of "what just happened? what?" and I wanted it to be explained and it never was. Why did Ragnar offer Athelstan as a sacrifice? I know he's getting progressively more douchey, but c'mon, they bros, man. Ragnar/Athelstan/Lagertha OT3 is the main reason I watch. D:

Also, I didn't understand why Ragnar refused to let Siggy light the funeral boat thing. :-/

sorry if I'm spelling all the names wrong haha

No, I get what you mean. The characters are pretty amazing, but the story gets...awkward. Like, what they just squeezed into one season could've been stretched out over two, really, just about, and filled in the bits that made it get confusing.

My other theories on why Ragnar offered up Athelstan as sacrifice (beyond the one I put up already) go like: 1. He knew Athelstan hadn't truly stopped being a Christian in his heart so he brought that home hardcore (but then, again...there should've been some damn followup/resolution instead of just "oh yeah, Athelstan's still hanging out with everybody and being their buddy and things are hunky dory). 2. He thought that sacrificing the priest of another god would have pleased Odin et al and he really wanted them to give him a son...

And yeah, I didn't really understand the "no you can't light the boat" thing either. Maybe he thought it would give her too much respect and people would still think of her as their proper first lady? (Well, you know what I mean) No, I really don't have a good reason for that one so I'm rolling with Ragnar being petty and/or figuring he'd done well enough by the former Earl (who I kept seeing as d'Artagnan the whole time from The Man in the Iron Mask) that he wasn't going to do any more than he already had.
