UH, YES, me too, albeit guiltily. If she had been of a legal age I would have really loved it - creepy, antagonistic ships with fucked up power dynamics are pretty much my favorite.

Lemony Snicket meant it that way, I'm pretty sure. On the whole rereading the series at a later age can be a completely different experience than a first childhood reading.

This can be applied to a lot of books of course, but SoUE is, I think, a really extreme case, if only for all the references.

Hmm, I saw him as uncomfortably sleazy even as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Even looking at it now I still get the impression that he just wanted their inheritance. He didn't give off any pedo vibes IMO.

I'm just going to leave this excerpt from the first book, when Olaf tries to force Violet to marry him:

"You were easily tricked," Count Olaf said, grinning, and the judge began to cry. "It was child's play, winning this fortune. Now, if all of you will excuse me, my bride and I need to go home for our wedding night."

And this one from the second book, when he is disguised as "Stephano":

Over dinner, Stephano told funny stories and praised Monty's scientific work, and Uncle Monty was so flattered he didn't even think to guess that Stephano was holding a knife under the table, rubbing the blade gently against Violet's knee for the entire meal.

And this line from the ninth book, during the scene where Olaf and his henchmen are discussing which of the Baudelaires is most likely to have survived the events of the last book:

"I myself hope it's Violet," Olaf said. "She's the prettiest."

Keep in mind that she's fourteen. Yeah. Sleazy as hell.

Whoaaaaaa.

Time to reread these and feel uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a line in the book that's something like, "He looked at her as though she were a birthday present he was dying to unwrap."

And I read that and was like, Welp, I want this now.

I'm honestly curious about this. What about these books appealed to you as a child or even now as a teen or adult?

I was already adult when they were published and I got curious about them so I tried reading them. I didn't like them at all or even could see how they appealed to kids; Olaf was skeevy as all get out, it seemed like the author told instead of showed most of the time (iirc), etc.

No offense is meant if you do like them; I just want to understand what the appeal is for those who do like them since they're so popular. I don't like the Twilight books, but I do understand why some people love them so (hell, I loved skeevy 80's romance novels at one time).

OP

To answer your question, the books make me laugh out loud. I totally dig the dark humor and the outrageous narration. When I was a kid, I didn't like reading the nice books, I liked reading Roald Dahl and Goosebumps and Lemony Snicket. These books, as well as teaching me a lot of vocabulary, were very entertaining.

I might despise the conclusion of it, (I don't think Handler planned things out very well,) but to me, it was a creepy bunch of books that made me laugh and taught me things. Also I always liked books which had villains that were real people over unstoppable supernatural beings. Olaf was a bad guy who seemed like he'd exist in real life, which made him even scarier.

In short, I understand why people wouldn't like the books (repetitive, confusing near the end, explaining a lot of the plot rather then showing it,) but the macabre nature of the books made me love them.

I thought they were well-written and I loved the black humor and literary/historical references.

They're just plain funny and I love black comedy.

The showing, not telling is done in such an elaborately overdone and facetious way that it made it funnier to me.

At least, that's why I liked them... also, Violet is a pretty awesome female lead for the genre and also, I just really, really love sibling relationships in fiction and I always think the world could use more stories that focus on sibs.
