Agreed.

Same tbh. It's even more hilarious when it's just gifs. Crap literally snapshotted from frames of a show and put under a pretty filter.

Oh no! Your life's work has been stolen!

I've never cared either when people post my drawings elsewhere, not even if they don't bother to attach my name.

The only thing that annoys me are those OC recolors. I'm glad that you liked the picture, but what on earth made you think that the abomination you made by slapping some colors on it in MSPaint was a good idea? On the other hand, I've had some good laughs that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think posting fanart is fine as long as you don't claim it for your own. Hell, if I were an artist I'd be thrilled that people liked my non-profit art enough to share it.

I'm also a bit bothered when people profit off of their fanwork.

I don't mind someone doing those things. But I have to put my foot down when they claim my art as their own or are trying to make a profit off of it by selling prints or making shirts. If they were to make a shirt for themselves for fun and non-profit. Rock on. But again, not for money. I am not selling any of my fanart because I don't want to be sued by the original creators. Don't you do it. Or worse, don't you do it and end up getting me in trouble because they were able to trace the artwork back to me.

I think it's a pretty jerk move. Same with fic. I mean, I don't get up in arms with it (mostly b/c I put my tumblr url on the art thing anyway) but jeez, if I draw/paint/write something for a fandom that I love, I would like to see other fans reaction to it. I want to be a part of that. If they like it (or if they hate it!), I would like to get the recognition for it.

I'd be thrilled if someone made icons out of my fanart, or shared it as long as they didn't claim it as their own.

What I can't stand is people taking my fanart and turning into their freaking OCs.

I'm with you. I don't get what the big deal is. It's nice to get feedback and comments, sure, but mostly I want people to see my stuff and enjoy it. I can't get mad about reposts.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I draw fanart and my stuff gets reposted all the time and I don't see why I should get mad about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The only time it ever bugged me was when some of my porny fanart ended up on a shitty paysite, because I'm not okay with someone else making money off it. But reposting otherwise is fine by me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an artist and I take a pretty lax stance on people using my work (fanart and my official stuff). I don't mind people using it for icons, reposting it, etc. just so long as my watermarks aren't removed and they aren't using my work for profit and/or claiming it as their own. (I have had to irl take action against people using my work for profit and it was pretty shitty.)

I find the people who freak the fuck out about 'stealing mah icons' or reposting gifsets to be really funny and kind of sad. Like, oh gosh I have to give you credit for screencapping, when all you did was take a still of someone else's work? Why do I have to credit YOU when am I not posting a credit link to the director, cameramen, actors, set designer, concept artist, etc.

Fanart is a little bit different if it's something you actually drew but what gets me is icons. When someone crops a screencap, sticks some song lyrics on it, then whines about wanting "credit" if someone else wants to use it. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't care about posting my art elsewhere or making icons.
But I think it's disgusting when people take the artworks and blurr/crop/paint over the "watermark".

I put my website adress on that shit for a reason, assholes!

I agree. I'd be flattered if someone liked my fanart enough to repost it or icon it or whatever. It's happened, and I was just like... oh cool.

The worst case is when it's someone whining over screencaps. As if anyone else couldn't go and take the same exact screencap.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you, anon. As long as they aren't claiming they drew it or somehow making money off it, if someone wants to repost my art somewhere, they can knock themselves out. In fact I'd be flattered as hell to know that someone liked my art enough to think it was worth reposting.

I post my fanart on the internet to share with other fans. Someone reposting it means it gets shared with even more fans, so how is that a bad thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I am actually not sure what this is about, and the comments aren't really clearing it up...? I think I'm missing context. Is this wank about people using fanart without *permission* or wank about people reposting art with no credit to the creator.

I don't understand why people do the latter. It doesn't make me angry (I'm not an artist anyway) I just can't think of any reason to do it that isn't kind of douchey.

I'm with this. If you post art on the internet, you have to acknowledge the fact people might be like, 'hey, I like this' and download it, and repost it or whatever. I have no issues with that whatsoever, and if you do, I don't think you have enough common sense to be posting anything in the first place.
However, you have every right to get batshit mad if people claim it as their own work. I've had character work stolen on tumblr about three times, and I have no qualms in ripping them the fuck apart.
If you're 'inspired' by me, don't take the crap I've worked on for years and claim it as your own, kiddo.

It just makes me mad. Just art posting though? I couldn't really care if someone else reposted my art. I think it's flattering, honestly. Just as long as they're not claiming it as their own, I really don't know what the problem is. If someone really wanted to know the source, it's not hard to find it yourself, don't bitch at other people to do it for you.

TL;DR Fuck tumblr culture.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. This makes me think of the whole HetaOni shitstorm with Pianodream. People posted screencaps of her cutscenes and she went BERSERK. She actually stopped people from being able to download the game, full-stop. What even.

I think it's nice to source back people's art and fic because it takes actual skill to draw and write well. I think getting pissy over someone not crediting your doujin scans, on the other hand, is kind of ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's polite and considerate to give credit and maybe a link if it's an original piece of work and not just an unedited screencap or gif (and assuming that the work in question is discoverable on the Internet--I have zero sympathy for artists who post stuff, then try to scrub it from the web and get mad when people post a copy they found somewhere and can't find the source even when they try.) Seeking the creator's permission is also nice, but realistically, most people just aren't going to go that far.

But as long as they're not claiming credit for something they didn't make or charging money for it, I don't think it's worth throwing a hissy fit over. Especially in the case of icons, which are almost never a full-size copy of the whole original piece.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
as long as they don't claim it's their work. otherwise be considerate to think that as shitty/good the art is, the artist put some effort to it.
also ever thought that to some artists, this might be their means (or only means) of income and the publicity they get when given credit would help them? not that you're obligated but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hope everybody in this thread is okay with reposting fic in full as well because otherwise you'd be a bunch of hypocrites.

I'm generally pretty relaxed about people using my fanart for anything that could fall under personal use, but I've had a lot of problems with people claiming my art as their own and trying to sell my fanart, and that's a good reason why I want to be sourced when my art is posted- when things get posted around the internet too much people start thinking it is their free clipart and that they can do whatever they want with it.

It's also kind of shitty to not source an artist. When I am sourced I gain followers, when I gain followers I get more opportunities for commissions, when I get commissions I don't starve to death.

It's also super easy to reblog on both tumblr and deviantart, so I don't see why it's so bad for artists to ask for a simple link back or for you to reblog from their own blog.
