Yup. DiCaprio's was passable, but it's hardly worth getting all "One True Version" over. Especially since it's a play, and plays are, by definition, always going to have different renditions and versions.

i think OP specifically means "Romeo + Juliet" as opposed to "Romeo and Juliet". wasn't aware of a remake though...

Either this is a troll secret or OP doesn't get out much.

Whining about doing another movie/TV/whatever media version of a Shakespeare play? Yeah, has to be wank.

I looooove that adaptation so much.

I wouldn't worry about the new one replacing it though because they're very different styles. It's more likely that the new one might replace the Zeffirelli version.

The best part

What's "definitive" or "best" is in the eye or the beholder and is often age- or generation-dependent. There have been multiple film adaptations of this story before and there will continue to be more in the future. Someday, the people squeeing over the new version (which I hadn't even heard about) will be the ones doing the bah-humbugging while others are getting excited about the next new version.

favorite shakespeare versions?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of....what's your favorite?

I've always been a little embarrassed that my favorite Hamlet movie is that one with Mel Gibson. It's definitely not the most accurate and being a huge Shakespeare and Hamlet fan I feel that should matter, but it totally doesn't. I love it so.

... It's Shakespeare. There will never not be new versions of Shakespeare, at least the famous ones. When humans are making movies using telepathic lucid dreaming, they will probably be making movies about Romeo and Juliet. It's ... really not worth getting upset over.

This was a pretty good version, though. I loved all the visual imagery, especially the party scene. For example, when Lady Capulet is dressing as Cleopatra and Lord Capulet is dressing as Caesar, it suggests a fascinating other layer to the characters. Especially if Lord Capulet chose his costume knowingly.

I thought I'd love the Luhrmann version and even watching it again for my English Lit class I just can't warm to it. I also never much cared for DiCaprio and Danes' versions of Romeo and Juliet. I thought they were passable at best although I loved this film's Mercutio. I think it's a decent film, but nothing special. I hadn't heard they were doing another film version, but I'm always excited to see new versions of Shakespeare's plays.

I'm sure many generation before you disagree.

Though I'm very fond of that version, too.

I keep meaning to watch this version of the play again. It's the only one I could stomach, since I find Romeo and Juliet inherently aggravating. The way all the classic stuff was translated into the modern setting - like all the swords and daggers being guns - combined with the original words really entertained me.

[A picture of a young man kissing a young woman passionately. The woman has wings (a part of her dress?).]

I hate there is a new version. This will always be the best ROMEO + JULIET

I liked the French musical version.

I would also love it if Tybalt would one day actually be played by someone who didn't look weird and/or wasn't a terrible actor.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, prior to this post, I've never heard anything good about that version so...uh. That's you're opinion, but outside of that it's debatable at best.
