Not all good animation and films come from big studios. Secret of Kells comes to mind, because the story is great and the animation is freaking gorgeous.

So why not trying it with an independent studio?

Weird, huh? Have you ever heard of this movie-

It's pretty strange, and she did all the stopmotion by herself! I don't think your story is doomed just for being a little odd.

Did you know that you used 4 twice?

S. Korea also does anime, and since when did not being from either mean you couldn't do animation?

Being a "shitty" artist doesn't necessarily make you a bad director, as long as you make good use of what you do best and know what you want. Here's a crazy idea: ever you ever tried to find animation classes and the like? I'm sure there will be students there interested in experimenting on such; you gotta start small, right?

Not to mention 6. You can't count. XD

[Picture is a screencap of a character sitting in jail? from The Thief and The Cobbler, an animated film.]

It jus occured to me that an adult novel I'm writing would be better off as an anime or animted film. It reminded me that sometimes, I thought of being a director of my own animated movies. Only a few problems...

1. I'm a writer, and a shitty artist.
2. The executive meddling that doomed Thief and the Cobbler and Ralph Bakshi's early draft of Cool World terrifies the shit out of me.
3. Animation Age Ghetto, anyone?
4. I'm not Japanese, so Japan won't accept me anyway.
5. Even if I did follow my vision, it's likely to flop and I'd lose money and not be able to make any more films. Thus contributing to people's belief that "animation doesn't sell".

It makes me feel like that due to my weird interests, I just don't fit in anywhere.

Suggestions:

Stop visiting TV Tropes. Productivity and creativity go to die there.

Learn to draw. It takes years and a serious, continuous effort. Start by drawing 3D geometrical shapes (cubes, spheres, boxes, cylinders), and then start drawing simple objects around you. Look at anatomy studies and anatomy books. Just really studying how everything is put together with your own eyes and trying to picture it in 3D makes your brain start learning. Then draw and draw and draw and draw. Seriously, there are tons of tutorials out there, just get started and stop making excuses.

Make your own script and see if you can team up with someone.

There are animation programs. Try first with small animations. Didn't you watch that interview where Ralph Bakshi said that this is the perfect time to make your own animations since there are so many tools available and to stop relying on the mercy of bigger studios?

Stop worrying about Japan and "making it big". Those are just distractions.

I think you're looking for excuses not to write, which is fine, of the making of books there is no end, but don't blame it on Japan or the perceived strangeness of your ideas.

I agree with blueonblue that you sound like you're looking for excuses not to try. If anything, something that's unusual or hasn't been done before is more likely to get attention, at least from off the beaten path. And don't worry about proving critics of animation right; there are plenty of examples of commercially successful and/or critically acclaimed animation for both kids and adults to prove them wrong. Worry about making the story good now, and everything else later.

I think this is for you.

Just write a story. Worry about all the rest of that mess later. Write a good story.

warning: I am about to puke optimism and my love for an obscure SF cartoon all over you

Look up what Savin Yeatman-Eiffel did, confronted with a situation like yours. Hell, get the Oban Star-Racers artbook out from the library and read his own words - and those of the friends he pulled into the effort - about it. Took ten years, sure, but he met his wife, won several awards, and helped launch a good friend's dream career in the process!

...and he still really can't draw all that terrifically.
