I love this game but yeah, their romance was terrible.

Yeah, it's really forced. It's basically Rinoa sees a cute guy and decides to latch onto him and basically force her personality onto him constantly until he caves in and likes her. It's shitty writing, and awfully forced. Actually, in general, most of that game was shittily written and pretty forced.

"Hey! I forgot we all lived in the same orphanage as kids!"

They didn't all just forget by coincidence. Guardian Forces cause memory loss. That's why Irvine remembered but no one else did.

I got stuck on the Fujin and Raijin bossfight my first time through--I didn't realize the enemies got tougher if you leveled up, so I kept trying to powerlevel to beat them. I still remembered it fondly as a well-written game. Then, years later, I replayed it, beat that fight, and got the orphanage scene immediately after.

I thought it was disgusting how not only Rinoa but also all of Squall's comrades and "friends" seemed to have nothing better to do than try and pressure him into a romance he wasn't even remotely interested in. It really was some damn creepy writing.

Ooo, this was my favorite game as a kid. Replaying it as an adult didn't pan out well for me either, OP. I'm still fond of it, but it has not aged well and not even nostalgia can adequately cover for its flaws. It's really...just not that good. A lot of interesting ideas that I wish were better executed! But VIII is still pretty mediocre. And Squall/Rinoa is just unfortunate especially since ix and x did their respective romances so well ;-;, imo.

I loved this game when I was a kid. Now that I'm playing it again as an adult, I think these two have no chemistry whatsoever.

Also I kind of hate Rinoa. Which is sad.

Same with Seifer/Zell. But with an added bratty twerp aspect.
Selphie with everyone but Irvine.
Quistis and her whip.
Squall and Laguna. Come on that'd be such tasty angst.

Me too, anon. Rinoa always rubbed me the wrong way, but their romance was just terribly written and so tacked on that it felt like any actual emotional connection they had was the product of intense psychological trauma.

There were some fun things about the game, but the plot just felt more minced than Dragon Age 2's axed development cycle.

This was my third Final Fantasy. First was VI. Then, VII. Imagine my shock when I played VIII. :-/

I wish Rinoa could have been lost in space forever. Squall, too, for that matter - Quistis could have taken over, hell.

Secrets dumping on FFVIII just aren't the same without what's his name around anymore, that guy for whom Rinoa was his perfect MPDG and who'd get super buttmad if you criticized her, even just for writing/forced plotlines.

FFVIII was just a terrible game in general, OP, no need to feel bad that your adult self finally realizes it. For a good PSOne-era FF that has aged well, you could always play FF Tactics or FFIX.

I never thought they had much chemistry (it's hard to have chemistry with a brick wall) and then the plot revelations later on just made me feel extremely weird all around.

I saw a Headcanon that Rinoa was controlling Squall with Adel's sorceress powers or something. My theory is that their "romance" is Squall projecting his emotional trauma on her (like someone else said). I think the poor guy lost so much at that point that "losing" her just caused him to kinda snap. I remember this "snap" well. I really wanted my snarky jerk back...

But yeah. I love this game, but I can pick this shit apart all day.
