Learning to draw anatomy

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not an artist but I want to try my hand at drawing human bodies that aren't stick figures, any good sites/videos I can use to learn?

Posemaniacs is good for sketching practice. Tutorial-wise, I found this person's anatomy tutorials pretty helpful. There's also Help You Draw on Tumblr, though I've found some of the tutorials they've posted can be a bit hit or miss.

Check the "Expressions Tutorial" and "Construction Drawing" ones!

I don't have any links for you, but don't be afraid/embarrassed to use stock photos for poses when you draw people.

I've done anatomy drawing courses and I still make people weirdly proportioned when I draw them in a new pose for the first time. If I have a reference picture it's so much easier because I can see how everything bends and how the limbs look when they're in that pose. It's also good to have a better idea of perspective and lighting so they won't look flat.

Not really anatomy but I feel like I really improved after seeing these two tutorials:

It also helped me to copy art from different artists to see how they bend the rules and interpret anatomy through style. I know people say don't copy, but idgi, it felt like I learned faster that way. (Obviously, if you do decide to copy, don't post these online or people will give you hell.) Keep drawing, keep trying new things. It may take some time, so don't give up!

Is that pic on the tinypic page by Cliff Young? I've picked up a couple of his art books reproduced from Dover (I wouldn't be surprised if they're online, btw, they're from the '40s and very early '50s). The drapery one is really good for basics.

Not anatomy specifically, but you might find some other things in this old F!S thread (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/732733.html?thread=615130429#cmt615130429)? I've heard great things about Andrew Loomis' books from other sources as well (there's a link to an anatomy one there).
