The Name of the Wind

Can anyone give me a personal opinion on this book? I'm curious about it.

I hated the main character, who is super great at everything and smug as fuck about it. I kept waiting for the book to pull the rug out from under him and reveal him as an unreliable narrator, and it never happened.

It's one of my favourite books, so I'd say my opinion of it is pretty positive :D

I love it. I hate reading about it on the internet because then I feel bad for loving it.

I'm the anon above you, and wanted to second this SO much.

People sure seem to have lots of bad things to say about it :/

It's the Internet hype cycle. People used to love the book way, way too much and now they hate it way, way too much, partly out of contrarianism and partly because when it was the boom part of the boom-bust cycle, people praised it way beyond what it's worth.

I don't care for the book myself but I think some of the criticism can be too negative. It's not the most horrible book in existence, it's just an okay book that's not at all to my taste. But that's just the way the Internet is I guess.

It's very... author's self insert Gary Stu male fantasy. The writing itself is pretty good and overall the plot stays interesting, but the main character is so obnoxious in how ~totally perfect at, like, everything~ he is. Actually, none of the characters were really interesting, not that love interest either. More than that, I know it's part of a series, but after the beginning it felt like nothing of real importance was happening.

Overall, I read it entertained, but I had zero affection for Gary (can't actually remember his name now, except that I couldn't pronounce it.)

It's a decent enough book, aside from the main character - who, like other people have said, is a complete Gary Stu. The only times I could root for him were when he had exaggeratedly awful opponents, like Ambrose. If there hadn't been the contrast of the innkeeper sections to show he was eventually humbled, I'd have abandoned the series.

Book two was even sillier, but I won't talk about that if it'd be spoilery for you.

I think it's a fantastic book. Love it and the sequel.

Of course, I also love Dan Simmons, and recent posts have made it clear that a lot of F!S has a hate boner for him, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. :)

It's not a good book - there are some pretty clear technical and narrative issues - but depending on what you're looking for, it can definitely be an entertaining one. The biggest issue I had with it was pacing. The author didn't really seem to know what parts of the story needed focus, so there are a lot of things that either have way too many pages devoted to them, or seem to be weirdly glossed over.

(I won't refute the Stuishness of the hero, but I knew about that going in - I find Sue/Stu fantasies can make for good popcorn books while travelling - so it didn't register as a problem for me.)
