Pansexual vs Bisexual

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't they basically the same thing? Why do people differentiate?

Some people say they're two terms for the same thing. Some people like to use bisexual to mean only attracted to people of the male-female gender binary. Some other people get offended by those people.

It really boils down to how individual people identify. Even if a distinction is made between the terms, they convey similar ideas. But some people are only comfortable identifying as bisexual, some are only comfortable with pansexual, and some are fine with either term. All that matters is that you use the term each individual prefers.

Bisexuality implies that they are attracted to males and females, pansexuality is more inclusive of people who don't fit the gender binary.

There are gray areas and in the end it comes down to different people feeling comfortable with different words for themselves.

I think the difference is,while bisexual people will be willing to sleep with men and women, pansexual people would be willing to sleep with trans*/asexual/female/male (and others like that) if they fell in love with them first.

... Okay, I see people treat trans* identity as separate from male/female all the time, but where the heck do asexuals come into that soup? Do you maybe mean agendered or intersexed?

Whoop,that's what I mean.Sorry for the confusion.

asexual

Errm...I don't think that word means what you think it does.

Aaaaaand I totally didn't see the comment above. Nevermind.

Maybe I'm crazy, but...I'm kind of bothered by the fact that a bisexual person might not sleep with someone who is trans* or genderqueer.

I'm more bothered by the fact people assume this.

Re: Pansexual vs Bisexual

I probably should have phrased it as "the idea that..." rather than as "the fact that...", because it's not an assumption I would ordinarily make. I was more taking issue with the implications of anon's definitions.

In my experience, Pansexuals are more special.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-06-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They like multiple categories of people and therefore must have their uniqueness acknowledged whenever they mention wanting to fuck someone. Pansexuality is just so fancy, anyone who is not a pansexual just ain't queer enough. Bisexuals are just unicorns, pansexuals are alicorns! At least on tumblr. I'm sure there are people out there in real life who are perfectly normal.

The definition, however, is simply people who don't care much about a gender binary when choosing sexual or romantic partners. It sounds pretty awesome.

I see it differently. I think they should all be calling themselves pansexual, regardless of their desire for uniqueness, but a lot of people call themselves bisexual because it fits in more neatly with social mores.

Sorry. I like fucking biological males with penises and biological females with vaginas, exclusively. There will be no strap-ons, T-dicks or innies for me. You sound like a SOC 101 brat. Go back to school and learn more things.

ayrt

...man, you are angry. And it's kind of silly.

Or, you're a silly person acting like you're angry.

Either way, I'm entertained, and I suppose that's what matters.

Re: Pansexual vs Bisexual

They are.

Pansexual seems to be a term based on biphobia, as the bi in bisexual doesn't refer to 'male and female' but rather 'gender of the person and all other genders'.

However, people who like pansexual (or have just plain been misled) believe that bisexual means 'attracted to males and females.' The term has even been evolving that way in common vernacular.

But when it comes down to it, yes, they are basically the same thing.

Re: Pansexual vs Bisexual

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
that's automatically assuming that people who identify as pan and people who identify as bi would never overlap.

I'm genderqueer. My spouse is genderqueer and intersexed. We both identify as pan because there's no way to slice 'bisexual' as anything other than subscribing to gender bianary and we don't fall on that scale.

The boundaries aren't clear-cut. I'm probably pansexual, but I usually say bisexual because that doesn't need an explanation.

Also, I'm sick of puns involving pans.

Ah, pansexuality, the sexual attraction to pans. As in 'Pandora', the infamous proprietor of Dora's Diner, 'Pantheon', an ancient shrine to household gods, and 'Pandemonium', the sinful sound of sizzling bacon when you're on a diet.

By which I mean, yeah, same here. :)

Re: Pansexual vs Bisexual

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when people just used the word bisexual to describe attraction to both sexes (including trans because most MtF and FtM want to be seen as their preferred gender anyway). I guess technically I'm polysexual, because I've only felt sexual attraction for women (mostly), men, and MtF women. But I prefer just saying I'm bisexual because no one outside of the LGBT community even knows about pansexuality or polysexuality and a lot of people who use those terms to describe themselves in public come across as special snowflakes (at least from my experience).

Re: Pansexual vs Bisexual

People differentiate because not even the people who know the difference between sex and gender confuse them regularly.

I feel like if you removed the "not" this sentence would actually make sense.

From what I understand:

Bisexual= attraction to more than one gender

Pansexual = attraction outside of gender

Is this splitting hairs? Probably but in cases of identity I say people should just ID with whatever makes them comfortable and happy.

People differentiate for a lot of reasons, some political, some social, some just because they like the connotation of one term better than another term. In a similar vein as to how people might use neither and use the terms queer, polysexual, omnisexual, fluid, or a bazillion other labels. Or they might have multiple labels. Or they might have no labels.

Idk as a non-monosexual person because there are so many labels available, each with different sociopolitical connotations, it is a personal choice as to which one you ultimately decide to use in public or private, like personally I feel more queer or fluid but publicly call myself bisexual when appropriate because it is easier and people actually know what you are talking about.

Because tumblr pansexuals tend to be ignorant and biphobic dipshits. Perhaps less so on reddit where there's a broader recognition that many of us historically used multiple words to describe multiple nuances of meaning.
