The word is nigger. Don't call it the n-word. It's not Voldemort. You're using the word in context. That's okay. You can put quotes around it if you're afraid someone's going to jump down your throat for saying a racist word is racist.

Calling "cunt" the c-word is just a new level of silly.

That word is ugly. "The N Word" is facile.

I wouldn't. If they know what the word is, they are then able to use it, and if they're not black themselves this can only lead to badness. I'd just leave it with 'It's a very bad word.'

Or...they will never learn the context and history of the word. I can guarantee they will hear it if they ever listen to rap music. And instead of learning, "This is a bad word," they will think it is okay to use because of the music they hear.

URGH POC is a horrible word as well, grinds me worse than nigger. At least nigger is upfront in it's racism, contextually.

This indigenous person begs otherwise. Calling it the N-word is trying to cover up the history. In the context of talking about the word, it is OKAY to ACTUALLY SAY THE WORD so people are not confused and can remember all the negative history.

No. You get to decide that you're offended by it and to say so, and to explain why if you're so inclined. That's it. If the other person is not persuaded, they're under no obligation to listen to you.

(Hint: "I get to decide what other people are and are not allowed to say because I'm a POC and they're not" is not a persuasive argument, any more than "...because I'm white/male/rich/Christian and they're not" is.)

Exactly. Words have power. And we're treating them like Racism That Will Not Be Named will come and get us if we use racist words in context.

Again, I'm talking about using the words in context. I teach history. I am not going to clean up history so the little freshmen can talk about oh it was so bad when people used The N Word let's watch Roots and then forget all this ever happened in my country

But the above conversation is not the same. I can see if you were reading an old letter from mid-1800's where that word was used as common language. Or reading from Huck Finn where the word HAS to be used in order to fully understand the intention of the story. But a casual, modern conversation like above? Nah. Pass.

If we're talking about people calling each other slurs, why not use the slurs? In a conversation where we both acknowledge that the slurs are terrible?
