Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it ok for british males to use the C word? I keep getting told (by british males ofcourse) that it's ok for them to say that word, but it always seems to me like southerners using the N word. What are do you all think?

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It has a different context in the UK than in America and usually is said by men to other men, often in a matey way but not always.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it's still using the female genitalia as an insult. It's still sexist. The fact that it 'has a different context' in another backwards thinking nation doesn't make it ok. I mean, in the context of several middle eastern countries female circumcision is ok, Should we really just accept that as a cultural difference?

As a British male I,

(words are devoid from meaning without a cultural context, so obviously you can't ignore that and here it's almost exclusively a term used without its gendered history - outside the obvious crude anatomical reference)

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
used without its gendered history

How do you figure that? It's A GENDERED word, how can it not have a gendered history?

If you have to ask, it's probably not. Either way, the N-word isn't just inappropriate for Southerners, so I've no idea what you think being British has to do with anything.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What I mean is that culturally white people from the deep south are much more comfortable with the N word, just like how the british males are much more comfortable with the C word. Neither have the right to use the word and both are, in my opinion, absolutely wrong for allowing its use.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard it has a very different context in the UK and is not nearly as offensive as it is in the States, so with that I could see it being okay. But I'm not British so I have no actual idea.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what they say, but in the end it's still a gendered insult. Equating the female genitalia with something very bad. I just wanted to know the logic that let's british males think this is ok.

Er, are you talking about the slang for female genitalia, or something else?

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

I'm talking about the word Cunt used as the worst insult in the English language, and why british males think this isn't massively sexist..

As a British woman, I'd say it's completely not okay, and I wouldn't associate with a man who used language like that.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the important question here isn't what we think or what British men think, but what British women think.

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
British women don't use that word pretend to justify it by saying it's cultural. British men are trying to persuade the world that it's an ok word, and I want to know why? And if possible how to stop them.

You seriously think cunt is as bad as nigger? SERIOUSLY?

Re: Question about the cultural uses of the C word

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. They're both vile words used to oppress and dehumanize a group that has been victimized for centuries.

I might even go so far as to say the C word is worse. Women, have been fucked over worse and for longer than black people. Women were kept as slaves for significantly longer than black people, and in many parts of the world they still are.

So yes. Words used to oppress women are much worse than words used to oppress black people.

I didn't parse it as OP thinking they're equivalent in severity so much as highlighting the fact that certain groups (Southern whites, British men) saying that it's not that bad in their cultural context doesn't mean that's actually the case.

The word is nigger. Don't call it the n-word. It's not Voldemort. You're using the word in context. That's okay. You can put quotes around it if you're afraid someone's going to jump down your throat for saying a racist word is racist.

Calling "cunt" the c-word is just a new level of silly.

First, just use the word. You are not four. Cunt.

Secondly, I grew up in the US and both my parents use the word cunt as an insult. I don't use it often and some of those times I have used it jokingly with my sister (I am also a girl). I don't really consider it any different than dick or asshole.

I actually love the word cunt. It is such a hard sounding word. I sometimes say it in my head when I am alone in a room. Cunt. Has the same satisfying feeling as cock.

Southerners using the N word

...Right. The '50's called, they want their stereotypes back.
