Disney's Frozen-So many different issues

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There are so many complaints for this movie. It's generic, it's just another white princess/white prince film, the character looks like red-head Rapunzel, etc. However, I think this is the issue that really struck home for me.

The Snow Queen was a story that was made up of 95% female characters. The only really important male character was Kai, and he's pretty passive. Not only that, but he's the one that has to be saved! And he's not a love interest for the MC! Gerda goes on this long journey to save her friend, who she only cares platonically for. Along the way she meets a cast of mostly female characters. The bandit queen and her knife wielding daughter, a helpful old witch, a pair of women that help Gerda realize her potential, a female crow, a princess that will only marry a prince of her intellectual equal, and the villain herself is also a woman.

This could have made for an awesome movie. Disney, instead, took all those female characters and threw them out. They replaced all of them, save for Gerda and the Snow Queen, with male characters. A prince, a male love interest, a male reindeer, a male snowman. They chucked out the passive best friend Kai all together.

Just...why? We've seen this type of story a million times in the past. It's just so lazy on Disney's part. It's even worse than DreamWorks Ratatouille ripoff with snails.

It comes out this winter :P

Hm. About Frozen or the Ratatouille ripoff? Because if you meant the latter, then yeah. It replaces the rat with a snail, and cooking with racing. Instead of a loveable awkward French guy, it's a loveable awkward Mexican guy. The rat wanted to be a cook, the snail wants to race in NASCAR. It's pretty bad.

I didn't know much about the story or the new movie, but if that's what they've done with it, that's bullshit.

The trailers

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's what they're doing. The Snow Queen is now Gerda (Renamed Anna)'s older sister. Anna is the one now cursed, instead of Kai. There's a male love interest named Olaf that helps Anna. Instead of the crow, she has a pet male reindeer. Gerda/Anna is now a princess, with a prince back at home. (My guess is she'll choose Olaf instead, because twuwuv!) They meet a...comic relief snowman with buckteeth along the way, too.

Here's the teaser trailer for Frozen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WdC4DaYIeQ

Here's the Japanese trailer which is better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRJv1K28quE

The blond guy is Olaf, btw.

I haven't heard much the movie, so I hesitate to comment until I've seen it myself, but as a Dane it makes me sad if they've changed so much of Andersen's work. It's such a good story :(

For whoever is interested:

A few scenes were broadcasted on Japanese television. So far, I can't say I'm looking forward to it. And Gerda is now the Snow Queen's sister!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The trailer is even worse; it's literally just a comic relief scene between the snowman and reindeer. No indication of the plot or who the actual main characters are at all. I honestly thought somebody had sent me the wrong link at first. It's pretty clear Disney thinks having something so female centric is way too much of a gamble now. I wouldn't be surprised if this was significantly changed during production.

When did things get this bad?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The Japanese teaser trailer is better. You see Anna's sister become evil, for whatever reason. And then there's some scenes with Anna and Olaf fighting a giant snowman. It's a shame, because the snow looks beautiful, but the rest is just awful, awful, awful.

The American teaser is such a condescending piece of target marketing. Like, I'm the first to tell you children are stupid, but even that ugly character design+uninspired comedy+generic pet sidekick is below even kid standards.

Wow. Way to butcher the whole story, Disney. My interest in this movie just took a nosedive.

Perfectly said. I'm tentatively looking forward to the sisters' relationship, but every other decision they've made with this project disgusts me.

I have no interest in CGI-movies so I know nothing about this one, but I gotta say I'm surprised that people are surprised. I mean, Disney doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to staying faithful to the original stories! Just take a look at The Jungle Book, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and so on.

How is Turbo a ripoff of Ratatouille? I didn't see Ratatouille and I haven't been paying attention to Turbo at all, so I'm just wondering.

Indeed, why. Why.

I can see why they renamed this Frozen because it bares almost nothing with The Snow Queen. I think I would be MORE ticked if they kept the Snow Queen title.

Hollywood/Disney is still under this mistaken belief that boys won't watch movies with girls in it. They do! You just have to make the story interesting. The Snow Queen is story loved by both genders. It's a shame that Disney refused to take a chance, which in all honesty, isn't really a chance, had done a more straight adaptation of the story.

I don't know why people act like this is a new thing Disney just did for the first time. Changing stories for toon versions? NO WAI.

Gonna watch it and enjoy myself.

What confuses me is why they even bothered to remake a fairytale with so many female characters if they're scared of using them. It's not like The Snow Queen is one of the more popular stories, they are a ton of fun, male-centric fairytales that are about as well-known as that one that they could have done instead. How about Firebird or Tinderbox? Leave girl-centric shit alone if you're gonna fuck it up.

At least I have the Hallmark version. Honestly I think that that movie is what Frozen should have aspired to be, and comparing it to what Disney's done it's clear how much potential has been wasted.

I WANTED A DISNEY MOVIE IN WHICH THE GIRL SAVES HER BOY WAS THAT TOO HARD DISNEY YOU FUCKS

Are they even billing it as a Snow Queen adaptation? I figured they took the basic idea of a snow queen and ran with it in an entirely different direction. There's nothing tying it to the original, except that I thought she had a reindeer sidekick in the original story.

I'm just in it for the songs.

Just...why?

Probably the same line of reasoning that meant this movie would be titled Frozen (like how Rapunzel's movie was titled Tangled), or some other misguided noise.
