"Ableist language"?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone tell me why we're not allowed to say "stupid" and "dumb" anymore?

Re: "Ableist language"?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i guess because language policing is now the be all and end all of "activism" and is way more important than effecting any real change.

What I really love is that we're handing the next generation this whole new list of taboo words they can use to offend their elders.

It doesn't sound like you're interested in an actual answer, but they're used to oppress and mock people with disabilities.

Yeah, back when stupid and dumb were newfangled words for people with disabilities. Now they've long-since entered the lexicon for broad-spectrum terms.

Look, I can get with the "ableist!" activists when they say we shouldn't call people retards, because we shouldn't. But when it comes to stupid, dumb, lame and crazy -- when not used as synonyms for for actual disability or illness -- I just can't seem to give even a little crap.

I'm...kind of torn as far as crazy goes. I mean, if it's to describe something like 'crazy good/bad/whatever' then whatever. But...I've seen it used as insults for people who do have a mental disorder as often and *that* I'm completely not cool with.

And I addressed that point. (On phone, too lazy to deal with alphanimeric password.)

Yeah, people who talk about ableist language on tumblr are often called dumb or stupid for arguing unintelligently which hurts their feelings.

Because some people are stupid and dumb.

Perfect answer. Works for why the SJWers cry about those words and for the SJWers themselves. What flavor internet would you like?

Far as I know, you ARE allowed to say those words. Last I checked the social justice crazies weren't making laws on the matter.

Making laws? No. Making pointless taboos, and dogpiling for the fun of it? Yes.

+1

I hate hearing people whine about how "omg I can't say anything anymore." You can say whatever you damn well please. And then other people can react however they damn well please.

fuck that noise. I've reached my limit with how many words I won't say for fear of offending.

Because of a fundamental misunderstanding of what "stupid" implies. "Stupid" implies that the person acting stupidly could have done better, and yet behaved in an incredibly stupid manner instead.

Someone who has an actual mental disability would not be called stupid, because them making a more reasonable choice isn't something they could have done if they just decided to care/think about/pay more attention to it.

If you call a mentally disabled person stupid, that's offensive, because you're implying they should have magically been able to act differently. If you call someone with no mental disabilities stupid, you're just insulting their ignorance/poor judgement/lazy thinking/lack of forethought.

But some people decide that they'd like to make sure that no one can ever be insulted or judged for behaving in a colossally ill-advised manner, even if they DO have the mental faculty to behave more reasonably.

Mentally disabled person (and not bothered by 'stupid' except in specific contects) here- how can you be sure the person you're calling stupid isn't disabled? Outside of Down syndrome and a few other things you can't really tell by looking.

How can you tell they're not mentally disabled?

How can you tell they're not physically disabled?

How can you tell they're not depressed?

How can you tell they're not sick?

How can you tell they're not just upset?

How can you tell they want to talk to you?

How can you tell they are enjoying the party?

well we know how to tell when someone is desperate for attention

IMO, what makes this particular term offensive is whether or not the say-er knows. If you call someone stupid who you know is mentally disabled, that's kinda douchey. If you call someone stupid who is mentally disabled but you didn't know it, IMO, just apologize if you do find out, but if you can't tell they're mentally disabled from the get-go...well, no offense, but I don't really think it's a huge deal? Stupid isn't the worst thing you can call someone. I mean, a stupid action is a stupid action regardless, it's just that it could be mean-spirited to say it if you know the person who did it has a mental disability. But I may not have the right perspective here, so feel free to argue with this opinion.

But this kind of just strengthens my opinion that the word "stupid" is kind of jerky and pointless if you're describing a person wholesale, disabled or not. I find that "stupid" is a much more useful descriptor when you're referring to actions or behaviors.

If I may ask -- what contexts do you find the word bothersome? Just curious to know about various people's perspectives on these kinds of things.

1. Are people being arrested and/or charged with actual criminal prosecution for saying "stupid" and "dumb"?

2. If the answer to 1. is NO, then you are still allowed to use the words "stupid" and "dumb."

...I say this as someone of average intelligence who was called "retard" throughout the entirety of the time that I was trapped in the snake pit that laughingly passed itself off as a functioning school in the provincial education system in my area.

Jumping on "stupid" and "dumb" is distracting society at large from the actual issues that exist. But we all know that's what SJWs are really trying to do, anyway.

You can say those words all you want, anon!

...Just hang around with people who aren't dumb and stupid about this shit. :P

Re: "Ableist language"?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
...you ARE allowed to say stupid and dumb, but considering they're insults regardless of the background people will most likely not enjoy being called stupid/dumb.

Re: "Ableist language"?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
In the end, is the ability to insult people such an integral part of your online life?

I don't think it should be considered ableist, but I do think the whole internet would benefit from an "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" attitude.

Re: "Ableist language"?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, is that what the SJWs are on about now? Ableism is a trigger for me, and I use the words "stupid" and "dumb" all the time. I respect what offends individual people, but to say those words are offensive as an overall rule is just...stupid. And dumb.
