I'm going to be 25 soon. I've flunked all the oportunities I've had at an education due to mental health issues. I know I should at least look for a work. I want to see the world and travel and meet new people and forget I'm depressed and socially anxious. I want the life of a Marguerite Yourcenar or Roberto Bolaño or whatever.

But living off my parents, going to sleep with the sunrise, waking up at noon... is comfortable. So damn comfortable, like a crib or a casket.

And with my level of education, the best job I could hope for is flipping burgers anyway.

I'm so sorry.

have you tried volunteering?

... No. To be honest, I know nothing about volunteering. Anon, would you be so kind to give me a short explanation on what one does while volunteering?

Thank you <3

DA

It depends what kind of volunteering you're willing to do or able to do. Check out charities in your city/town/neighbourhood and ask. Volunteering can be serving soup to the homeless, handing out flyers for a charity, helping children with their homework, keeping company to patients in nursery homes...

You can start from here: http://www.redcross.org/support/volunteer and work your way from that. Good luck!

Something the other anon forgot to mention is volunteering at your local animal shelter. When I was severely depressed in high school and required to do community work to stay in my societies, the animal shelter is what I did. They're always looking for help, and if you volunteer enough, you can slide right into a non-technical job there.

Plus, animals are proven to be therapeutic, and in my personal experience, they help enormously.

Personally I would choose a library. Shelving books for a couple of hours, couple of times a week. It'll give you experience in service because you'll probably have to interact with patrons, and good organizational skills. You might be able to go from volunteering, to working as a page, to working full time as a clerk? Getting the professional help you need for your depression in the meantime (if you are not already seeking it), and then maybe going back to school for a degree in library science? It helps me to view life as a path or a mountain and every little thing is a step towards getting to the end of the path or climbing the mountain. CHOOSE YOUR PATH.

Best of luck.

A lot of hospitals have volunteers too, if you're looking for something with a 'different' type of volunteering.

At my hospital I think we have almost a thousand. They run messages, escort patients, deliver externally ordered flowers from the gift shop, and in my department (pharmacy) they help us with labeling of products/expiry checking etc.

Even burger-flippers get promoted. Seriously, plenty of people who never finished college end up with successful careers; one of my most successful friends dropped out of college (in part due to mental health issues) five years ago and got a job in a corporate copy centre, and has since been promoted to a $60k/yr management job. Having a college degree DOES open doors, no mistake, but that doesn't mean that if you don't have a degree you can't be out there hammering on those same doors.

If you need a small step to start off with, you could try signing up for https://www.taskrabbit.com/become-a-taskrabbit, or hit up temp agencies - often they'll just test your typing & MSOffice skills and send you to data entry gigs. You could request part-time hours to start off with if that would be easier for you. Jobhunting fucking sucks and is about 10x more miserable than even the shittiest jobs I've ever had, but you've got to get out there if you ever want to leave the parents' basement and have a life of your own.

I would third volunteering. Search for volunteering opportunities in your area with the internet and/or ask around places in your area whether they want anyone to volunteer for them. Then pick the place that looks the least boring and get someone to force you to go for it if you can't force yourself. You never know, if you work as a volunteer long enough, you may be taken on as paid staff there. At the very least, you'll have some experience; you may even learn something about a direction you want your life to go in. :)
