So tell people you like music. There's no shame in liking music. It's actually pretty great. It doesn't make you weird. And hey, maybe if you tell people you like music, it'll give you a chance to argue against the terrible, terrible arguments that people make against other kinds of music. And even if it doesn't, at least you'll be being honest to yourself.

Have you tried not hating things?

Maybe you just have a broad spectrum of what you like. Nothing wrong with that...just tell people you like a lot of things.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sort of understand why the anon here does that - people can be huge pretentious assholes when it comes to musical taste. I'm not sure why, though. They seem to associate types of music with stereotypes and subcultures and they are always saying that this or that band/genre sucks and people who like it suck and are "fake." I don't know why they don't just understand that different people like different things.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's perfectly possible to talk about the music you like without dissing other kinds of music.
In fact, by letting them think you share a dislike, you're missing out on focusing on your shared likes instead of a shared dislike which is fake on your part.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Just stop insulting the other genres and you'll be fine. It's totally normal and okay to like all sorts of different genres and to only talk about certain genres within certain groups.

This; I love a lot of different types of music, but I don't talk about my Jpop interest with a lot of people because most people will, frankly, not care.

...I think you need to work on your own self-esteem. Don't be a sheep which is following the group's opinions so you can belong to the group.

I tend to like a lot of different kinds of music as well, and I can't really imagine going around dissing any of them, let alone all of them to different people. Generally, I figure if I focus on what I do like that the person I'm talking to likes as well, it'll end up being more fun to talk about.

I'm trying to imagine saying with a straight face that Justin Bieber is better than the Stones ... it's not working, lol.

I mean, you're probably 14 or something if you have Belieber classmates, so it's completely normal to feel insecure about your tastes. Don't worry too much.

[Picture is... a collection of various album covers of various popular musicians.]

My musical tastes vary according to who I talk with...

When I'm with my rap-loving sisters and cousins, I agree that metal and visual kei sounds like unmelodic screaming/noise.
When I'm with my visual kei friends, I claim that Japanese boysbands suck and are untalented.
When I'm with my Japanese boysbands-loving friends, I say that Western pop is boring, unlike the Japanese one...
When I'm with my Directioners and Beliebers classmates, I agree that old-time bands suck in comparison to One Direction and Justin Bieber.
When I'm with my Beatles and other "old bands"-loving friends, I tell them that modern music definitely can't compare to the old one.
When I'm with my parents and older acquaintances, I say that all kind of rap music is crap that should not even count as music...

I feel like a total hypocrite, and like I'm afraid to show my own tastes... I actually like pretty much all the above music, and it makes me feel weird... I never let anyone browse through my iPod...

I'll just copy from Wikipedia:

Visual kei ("visual style" or "visual system") is a movement among Japanese musicians, that is characterized by the use of varying levels of make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics. Some sources think that visual kei refers to a music genre, with its sound usually related to glam rock, punk rock and heavy metal. However, this is contradictory to the fact that visual kei acts play various genres, including those unrelated to rock such as electronic, pop, etc. Other sources, including members of the movement themselves, state that it is not a music genre and that the fashion and participation in the related subculture is what exemplifies the use of the term.

I couldn't imagine lying that much about my music tastes/dissing stuff that I actually like. :P At worst I'd just keep silent on the topic of some bands.

Tell people that you like a broad range of genres. If they hate you for it by hearing that, then at least you can figure out who the elitists were.

Just say you like a lot of music and don't make it that big of a deal? Although now I suppose it's too late for that. :\

I feel like a total hypocrite

You are a total hypocrite. If your friends would like you less for your music preferences, they're snobs and you should ignore them.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
this.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
And this is why I never ever discuss my musical preferences with anyone. Apparently it's blasphemous to like more than one genre.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hope this doesn't come off as patronizing because it isn't meant to be, but I hope you will one day be able to be more confident. Always agreeing with people, no matter what YOU think, makes you nothing but a sheep and will get you in trouble sooner or later.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
On my iPod:
Nine Weird Al Yankovic albums
Enya
Yes
Queen
Steve Tyler's cover of Oscar the Grouch's "I Love Trash" ( with Elmo singing backup )
Pink Floyd
Eurythmics
Blue Man Group
DJ Tiesto
Oingo Boingo

etc. etc. ...

...I don't think I'll be putting it on shuffle anytime soon.

I also have large favorite lists on Grooveshark and YouTube full of LMFAO, Vocaloid, and the Moody Blues, as well as other lists dedicated to exotic instruments such as tongue drums. You really shouldn't worry so hard about impressing other people with your musical tastes. You should be more concerned with enjoying the music you happen to like, irrespective of where it comes from.

How 'bout if, instead of defining your music taste by what you don't like, you define it by what you DO like?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
This is so fucking sad. If you can't unabashedly love all the things you love and be honest about it to your friends, they're not truly your friends, are they? My closest friends are the ones who may not agree with my taste but they know my taste. I don't have to talk to them about every single aspect of my music taste but neither do I bash things I actually enjoy because I know they dislike it. That'd be bullshit. They respect what I like, even if they disagree it.

Stop lying to yourself and your friends.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with liking such a wide variety of music, OP. Just be honest and have fun listening to what you like instead of worrying about what other people think of what you like. If someone says that they hate a certain genre you like just shrug it off and discuss music you both like instead.
