Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

They gave a roll that should belong to an older plus sized woman (all the things you don't see hollywood roles go to) to JOHN TRAVOLTA.

You're welcome. All movies are flawed.

Well, an older plus-sized transvestite, if we're going to maintain tradition. (You have seen the original, right?)

The flaw that leapt out for me is that Travolta was too much of a cultist asshole to kiss a man, so after a terrific number celebrating the joys of middle-aged love, we cut away before the kiss in a painfully obvious way. Jerked me completely out of the narrative.

The role is traditionally played by a man, even on Broadway.

Proof that Broadway is sexist!

Re: Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
By that logic, the 2005 revival of Sweeney Todd is sexist because it cast a woman as Pirelli, a role typically written for men.

But hey, it's not like genderflipped casts exist to put a new twist on old roles and are *gasp* assigned because they fit the part, not like the old Shakespeare days where all you've got is "lol women can't act."

I wasn't going to mention it in this unrelated thread, but yes it's sexist. Boycott it.

Boycott something that happened in 2005?

Actually dear noodly, that element has been present in the stage version since it's creation and so was naturally brought on into the movie version. Now you know!

Actually, I'm... pretty sure that is always, and has always been, a drag role. Starting with the fabulous Divine in 1988. So.

Re: Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
How much of that is because they didn't want to cast a plus-sized woman in the play, though?

EXACTLY!

Re: Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Because the role was played by a man in the original movie that the musical is based off of. The role was, in fact, written for Divine.

A man taking a woman's role. Fucking Shakespeare in here!

Who do you think Divine is?!

You mean, a plus-size woman besides Motormouth Maybelle, and, I don't know, the main character?

Re: Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2013-07-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Um, none. It's because John Waters cast Divine in a shit ton of his films. Which, given that they started in the 60s wasn't exactly a common thing to do.

Re: Let Ol' noodly fix this for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Um, well..given that Waters wrote the role for a drag queen friend of his [Divine], I suspect it had more to do with 'Giving a role to a friend' than 'NO OVER-WEIGHT WOMENS!' - particular since both the main freaking character and Motermouth Maybelle were also over-weight women.

Yes, thank you. It baffles me that so many people here have missed the friggin' point. It's not ZOMG SEXISM!!1!1 if A. The main character and Motormouth Maybelle are played by plus-sized women. B. The role is given to a drag queen and he's not being goddamn ridiculed for it.

Yeah, no, that role was never meant to be played by a woman. But if you want to argue that the role should have gone to an actual older, plus sized transvestite a la the original, I'd totally back you. But don't go hating on the original John Waters-Devine combo. This Baltimorean will fight you.

*Divine

Might want to actually learn how to spell the name before threatening people over the person.

John Travolta in fat drag grosses me out a lot more than Divine eating dog do in Pink Flamingos.
