*squints* Trying to think of a fandom with masks but all I am getting is Marvel. And that fandom is pretty laid back. Plus the secret makes me think it is a webcomic or TV show. Hmmmm.

DC maybe? Or it's possible that the masks aren't literal. [or for an obsure fandom]

My first actual thought was the Labyrinth but as far as I know, they are not putting out new stuff.

I thought it might be The Borgias. The promotional material used masks, and there was an episode with a masquerade. And the fandom is....special... on occasion. Very special.

But that was canceled. So idk.

IDK either but the mask could be just about anything connected with comics, and while the MCU fandom might be pretty chill (I'm not all that familiar with it though I love the material, so I'll take your word for it) I'm not sure about the comics side. Or maybe it's not Marvel or DC. *shrugs*

Now I'm kinda curious though.

Anyway, I kinda agree with what forgottenjester says down-thread. When shit happens in your fandoms it feels awful and seems terrible because you're experiencing it. I was never in HP fandom but I've heard lots of crazy stuff about it; still, I've never experienced it firsthand so it wouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions bad fandoms.

Sailor V had a red mask if my memory serves and ...oof, fandom... ::shudder::

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted it to be Once Upon a Time and referring to Cora's mask in The Miller's Daughter, but that would mean someone else in fandom gives a shit about Cora so that can't be right, lol

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I made this a pretty complicated puzzle to figure out, my apologies.

I entered "red mask" into an image search because "crimson mask" is a term used in my fandom, but the image search for that turns up gory pictures (so obviously don't google that yourself unless you want gore).

From the sounds of it, I've still been in worse. But sometimes it's just where you're looking - unless it's a really small fandom with only one or two places to look.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So your fandom is... every fandom ever?

Like really, that describes a lot of fandoms depending on where you hang out on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about the Hannibal fandom -- or really, that the fandom has some incredibly smart people and a lot of incredibly dense ones. But the number of mb posts and tumblr asks that are from people who can't figure out the most frying-pan-to-the-face obvious symbols and can't seem to follow plots from one commercial break to the next are really disheartening.

Like, there are people who hate the dream sequences, y'all. They think it's stupid that you sometimes can't tell reality from fantasy on the show and bitch about being confused. OMG THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT HOW DO YOU FAIL SO HARD ASLDJFSSLKJOP9E

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, sounds like my fandom sometimes - with the denseness and not getting that sometimes something being confusing is the entire point.

I wish it was just tumblr, that skews young, but often I see the same dumbness exercised on message boards by considerably older fans. Though their complaints are most often along the lines of, "I'm not engaged with the story because everything didn't go how I wanted it to go so therefore it sucks, bleh".

Of course it's the worse fandom- to you. You're in it. I've found that whatever fandom a person is in seems the worst, every time. It's the one you know most about, the one you care most about, the one that affects you the most.

Some are better than others, yeah, but your fandom is worse to you because its your fandom.

So yeah, your secret makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, fandom rarely affects me when I don't actively participate. And when fandoms get large enough, you're really going to have every type of fan there, for better or worse.

Especially if you aren't in any others. I thought mine was the worst until it basically died - now I think it was the best. It wasn't, of course, I just miss aspects of it I can't find anywhere else.

Damn, good point. While a lot of people who I've ranted about my fandom to agree that it sounds like one of the worst ones out there, I guess it is all different when you're in the thick of it and trying to enjoy yourself among the idiocy.

From your text I thought Sonic the Hedgehog (which is a fandom I'm not even in), but that has nothing to do with masks so...

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-07-16 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is that kind of mask that covers only around the eyes and is used in parties. It is red and glittery.]

I feel like the people in my fandom are simply the dumbest. I'm sure a lot of people think this of their own fandom, and all fandoms will have their idiots. But in some ways, I would argue my fandom takes the cake for having the worst people. They're just never happy; when the canon gets a little silly, they hate it, then if it's serious, they don't "get it". They will shit on everything, and ruin live events by acting like assholes to show off their "smartness".

Without my tumblr echo chamber of the few intelligent, awesome people in this fandom, I would've left ages ago.

About the mask... Turkey from Hetalia?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
My guess - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The mask would make sense and every version has its haters.

o.O

Anyway, OP, I'm sorry to hear that about your fandom. Maybe go talk to the people in your 'echo chamber' and see if there are other fandoms they might be involved in that might be closer to your tastes.

AHAHAHAHA! I saw you mention TMNT and since it's a red mask, I got this mental image of Raphael looking all angry and tough with a sparkly red mask. *snort*

Looks a little like the infinity sign from Revenge (that show can be serious and silly!)
