Well, if you think about who his father is...

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-07-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, his dad is the ultimate God of the Nordic race, but I somehow didn't think that would make a difference

I mean one of Loki's children is a serpent and a half-dead girl - I never imagined divine genes to work like human genes ;)

Don't be dense. Odin presented himself to him as a human man, and probably to his mother too. He's part of the Norse mythology, which is a predominantly light-skinned people. If you say that divine genetics work differently then you'd give an excuse for people to say Anansis' sons don't have to be black.

that's something I just realized trying to reply to the comment above me

I always imagined Shadow as being black, ok, I suppose now I have to concede the point that he's mixed race because his dad's default form is a white guy

Shadow also has grey eyes like Odin, which would insinuate that yeah, he inherited something of Odin's mortal form.

Well, Loki's part giant, which is a different race again and partially explains why his kids are so weird. The half-dead part is always screwy, though.

Seriously, though. Race is the least you've got to worry about if one of your parents is a god. Species is usually more of a concern. Also angry divine spouses who hate you because you're the product of their husband's adultery (or because you're the child of monsters destined to destroy the world/kill the gods/overthrow the gods). Curses, berserker madness, truly astounding bad luck ... tentacles ...

The children of gods and mortals rarely had a fun time, is what I'm saying.

I'd love to see how you'd try to explain the gods of Ancient Greece or Egypt. Everytime they had sex a new monster or animal-headed being popped out. Pretty sure we can conclude that gods can do as they please because they are FICTIONAL and therefore don't have to stick to the biology or logic of humans ;)

It's been a while, but most of the Aesir I thought had mostly normal kids? It was usually when jotnar were involved that things got weird.

Not sure about Egypt, but most of the Greek monsters/part-animal people I remember were usually the results of a) the non-human parent being a monster/force of nature (Gaia, Echidna, Tartarus, etc), b) shapeshifting being involved in the conception, or c) the kid being cursed by one of the gods?

There was usually a rationale within the mythology, is my point. Not genetics as we know them, but usually at least an explanation?

Lol, yes, I forgot about Loki being only Odin's blood brother and not a relative. I think we can agree that trying to apply human standards of ancestry and ethnicity on mythological beings is a an effort doomed to fail.

Shadow has dark skin and is definitely of mixed ancestry since his dad is ... not of this world.
