Body-snatching/possession in TV or movies?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've become suddenly very curious about seeing actors playing their normal character being taken over by a different personality, and how the actors and writers convey the fact that This Is Not The Character You're Expecting. Any recs for examples of this being done really well (or really poorly?)

Supernatural

Whether it's people getting possessed by demons or Lucifer himself.
Both Jared and Misha have done (imo) very well in portraying different personalities before.

Seconded. Misha alone has now portrayed at least four completely separate personas and another three or four variations on Castiel's personality, and several of them have been strikingly, stunningly different from one another.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Episode: "Facets"

:D

I thought Bill Bixby was pretty damn amazing in that one episode of The Incredible Hulk. He was just really deranged and creepy, which was such a contrast to his normal -- warm and gentle -- portrayal of David.

And, uh, though it doesn't really count... I always loved the fight scene in Dynasty between Krystle and that impersonator! Here it is, in all its glory: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fidf3-ryQQ

There's about fifteen examples of this spread out throughout the various Star Trek series, applied to almost every main character. I don't even think I'm exaggerating the number.

The best ones are about Data from TNG, mostly because there's something really creepy about innocent dutiful android-y Data being taken over by someone who's blatantly not-an-android AND has malevolent intentions. Plus, Brent Spiner = brill.

THIS. Masaka is waking...

Also, DS9 "Far Beyond the Stars" and "Facets" and VOY - I don't remember its title, but the one with Seven of Nine and the Vinculum?

I used to think Billie Piper was an unremarkable actress.

Then I saw the Doctor Who episode "New Earth". :)

Farscape episode Out Of Their Minds was awesome -- the part near the end where Aeryn (in Crichton's body) is pretending to be Crichton, imitating his phraseology and gestures. Major kudos to Ben Browder.

That was amazing! One of my fav eps in Farscape for sure.

I really love that episode. I have a soft spot for the bodyswap trope in general, but that was a particularly excellent execution of it.

This doesn't exactly fit, but Orphan Black has one actress playing a bunch of different clones.

In the show there are moments where clones pretend to be different clone who are pretending to be a different clone. All played by one actress. It's amazing to watch.

If you're up for toku, that's basically the premise of Kamen Rider Den-O. One guy plays 6 different characters regularly.

The Doctor Who episode "New Earth" has both. David Tennant does possession really well, but Billy Piper struggles to do anything other than read lines in her usual slightly peeved voice. To be fair to Piper, she can't really do anything except smug or peeved anyway.

Wow, no. Watch the episode again and take off your hate-goggles this time.

Nevah!!! The goggles make Billy Piper's acting bearable.

There's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer ep that did this really, really well. It's "Who's That Girl?" and is around the middle of the 4th season. There's a lead in episode you should watch if you want to understand everything going on the swapped bodies episode, but it isn't necessary if all you're interested to see is where they're actually swapped.

I really like it when it's the regular characters that are swapping body--especially in a long-running series, because the actors know each other's mannerisms and characters so well. I really liked the Stargate episode(s) with bodyswapping for that reason, and the Eureka episode.

This is pretty much the entire premise of Dollhouse.

Seconded. Though it has varying levels of success; the main actress is the weakest and not very good at "switching" personalities. She can do "blank" and "bad girl" effectively but anything else is rather undeveloped. But her co-stars are terrific at taking on any personality given to them.

X-Files had Small Potatoes and Dreamland, with shapeshifting and body-swapping, respectively. In Potatoes, the actors portray the shapeshifter in their body, while Dreamland takes the slightly uncommon route of the main body-swapped pair continuing to portray themselves, with only their reflections showing what everyone else sees. There's a couple scenes with another body-swapped pair where the actors, who are physically and character-wise polar opposites, portray the other's personality, though, and it's very effective.

Small Potatoes is quite good and acted well; Dreamland is... eh, and I think would have been strengthened some by having the main actors switch characters.

There's also the movie Face-Off, which shows that Travolta's hamminess and Cage's cheesiness can effectively swap places :P It's not subtle character work or anything, but I could buy into their performances for all the action flick it is.

Duet from Stargate Atlantis.

Rodney McKay and Laura Cadman are transported into a wraith dart (the bad guys' spaceships), they are rematerialized in Rodney's body. Rest of the episode features Cadman intermittently taking the wheel.
