If a video game never pissed you off you've never been to Anor Londo. :|

I thought "I bet that's something from Dark Souls", then Googled it and it was.

Rage moments are way easier to remember than any happy feel good. At least for me. And really I enjoy the hell out of gaming but I can't really say it's made up of a lot of specific emotional moments, I just like gaming as a whole.

Maybe you love pushing through the rage moment and into the winning moment? I know I've raged quit a bunch of times gaming, but coming through to the other side can be pretty damn fantastic.

Maybe try easier games? Or play games on an easier mode?

Either way, I hope you find games or moments in games to enjoy, OP.

Most newer games have easy modes, so I think OP should definitely try those (if they haven't already)! If you care mostly about the story or characters or mainly want to play for fun (don't care about challenge or achievements), it's worth it.

I play certain games on easy, especially if it's my first time through the game. Sometimes I go back and finish on other difficulties, sometimes I don't. These days I usually play on at least normal because of achievements (wanted to rage quit the last section of BioShock Infinite and refused to turn the difficulty down because of an achievement), but playing on easy can be more enjoyable in some cases. Just depends on the game and the level of frustration. However, like you said, defeating something that was giving you trouble is a wonderful feeling, so I understand the appeal of a challenge too. Not everyone is going to enjoy it though.

Plus, like someone up-thread said, I think it's sometimes easier for people to remember the frustrating moments than the emotional ones. If you spend an obscene amount of time retrying something it's probably going to stick with you.

I remember both and wouldn't have it any other way, but maybe OP should try watching lets plays instead? That way there's no rage quit moments. (Or at least none to do with gameplay.)

Not OP, I love getting past a part I was stuck on, beating difficult games and completing hard modes in games. It's a great feeling. It's half of the 'happy' I experience in gaming, the other half being 'feels' and the like.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
See, and I'm the exact opposite. I'm a casual player, rarely finish games, and could only list maybe 2 or 3 rage moments. But I have more happy moments than I could even begin to list here. I've gotten to the point that when I start to feel myself getting heavily invested in a game, I stop playing it because it seems like that's when it stops being fun.

It doesn't have to make you super-"feels"-happy to bring you enjoyment.

Maybe you just like to play games because they're relaxing or challenging or engaging, not because they give you lots of happy feels? idk

If playing games still makes you happy, then you should play games

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
wait why are you letting some random tumblr blog telling you how you feel and what you love

i'm on the same boat as you are; games make me rage too and i can barely remember heartstring pulling moments at all, but passing challenges after cursing at the screen is all the more sweet for the triumphs and that doesn't make somehow not love what i was doing

i mean sweet emotional moments and feels are nice and all but a good challenge is a good challenge no?

[Picture is a couple of posters from two tumblr pages:

One is titled "Gaming Things that make you RAGE" and has a red background and in white the silhouette of a Dual Shock game controller and the words "KEEP CALM" crossed out. Instead it says "AND RAGE QUIT!" Beneath the poster is the text: "Everyone has that one level or boss that they never want to beat again, even if it"

The second poster is titled "Gaming Things that give you feels" and has a blue background and in white has the outlines of a box of tissues and a Super Nintendo game controller, with the text "KEEP CALM AND HOLD YOUR GAMING FEELS" beneath them. Beneath the poster is the text: "Have you ever played a game that made you cry? Or made you so happy that your heart just ached? It doesn't necessarily"]

I've been a gamer most of my life. But I was recently browsing these two tumblr blogs when I realized something... I've had more rage moments in gaming than moments that gave me 'feels'. This made me sad because I thought O loved my hobby. But I couldn't even list more than 5 game moments that made me happy or emotional. But I could list over 100 that pissed me off. [sad face emoticon]

I have so many rage moments in video games, so many. But I think I just remember the frustrating moments more than the emotional/happy ones because if it's say a hard boss I'm going to have to do it multiple times before I get it which will make it easier to remember.

well, um... do they make you feel good? The rage moments, I mean.

Maybe games are just an outlet for your anger, and that helps you?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Games either give me rage or feels. There's very little in between. Some give me BOTH. They'll give me feels with one hand and punch me in the face with the other. ISN'T THAT RIGHT, MGRR?!

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-07-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, OP. I can remember a lot more rage moments than ~*FEELS*~ moments, though most of mine are related to That One Boss. It surprisingly makes the final victory that much more satisfying; I don't really get excited over beating bosses that don't present a certain level of challenge. I feel much better beating Bloody Marie than I do Nightmare, for example.

That... sucks. I... I play video games because they make me happy. Frustration is the opposite of what I want out of a video game experience. I'm sorry, OP.

(I'm willing to be angry at a game for a narrative reason though. That anger has a purpose.)

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-07-28 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Five? Easy:

1. The beautiful meta-narrative twist of Bastion.
2. Rescuing Imoen in Baldur's Gate 2.
3. Discovering the buried observatory in Morrowind.
4. Finding Pey'j in Beyond Good and Evil.
5. Rescuing Chakwas in Mass Effect 2.

Well, given that most games try to have challenging moments and not many go for emotional moments, I'd say having more ragequit memories than emotional ones is normal.

I guess if the ragequit/angry moments make you want to play less, or make you dislike a game, that would be bad. But just getting frustrated, in and of itself, isn't wrong. Most games are designed to make you frustrated at some point. The good ones do it in a way that makes you want to play more, and bad ones just make you quit.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-29 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Games make me rage a lot too. I think this is pretty normal.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-07-29 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm, five huh. I probably have more rage moments than feels moments myself, because I find it really only tends to be the RPGs that go for feels and I don't play that many RPGs. But!

1. Chrono Trigger - Schala and Zeal
2. FFVI - Feeding that dude fish to keep him alive in the second act
3. SMT Nocturne - the end of the Fifth Kalpa
4. Fallout (any) - wandering the wasteland (seriously I could do that for endless hours to no purpose whatsoever)
5. Mass Effect - saving Joker
Bonus non-RPG - oh whatever, so there's a nuclear bomb going off, I'm sure I'm fine, I'm the protagonist! ...See I'm fine, I just need to crawl to... ...safety...?
