Definitely read the second link: it's a petition urging Olympics sponsors to take a stand. The Olympics committee so far has barely commented on it and I fear a re-enactement of Beijing 2008. Russia said no LGBT athletes or audience member would be targeted during the Olympics, which, frankly, is a slap to the face. "Hey, don't worry! We won't have you arrested for two weeks just so you won't make us look bad!"

Ugh, Olympic games sponsors/organizers do not give a single shit about anything other than turning in a buck. I'd rather urge people to not support the olympic games (at all ideally, but specially in socially-sensitive situations/countries)

It's Russia. They actually don't give a flip as a whole society. If this happened in the US, you could guilt Americans into doing something about it but Russia? They'll shrug their shoulders and say, "Who cares?" You can rant and rave but you won't be able to guilt them into doing anything. That's not their in culture.

I agree. But like I said, you can't guilt them into it. I am not sure what you can do. A boycott like they suggested with Olympics? Would that make any sort of dent? The Russian attitude would likely be, "Fuck you. We didn't want you here anyway." Again, this is not the US we are talking about that likes to think of itself as a white hat hero and wants the world to see them in the same light. The Russians are going to do what the Russians want to do. Anyone who gets in their way will be steamrolled whether or not it is ethical.

I don't get how people can have so little empathy. Where is this hate coming from? What's the 'big deal', so to speak?

Russia as a whole doesn't strike me as extremely religious, so why so much hate for LGBT people? It's baffling.

I am guessing it is the propaganda machine that the government is running so well over there. LGBT people are the latest scapegoat in a long line of scapegoats that included Jews and Romani. You know how in the US you have Right Wingers blaming homosexuals for the latest hurricane? Saying God sent it out of wrath of the "gay agenda." Only everyone but a fringe group rolls their eyes at such a ridiculous notion. In Russia, they believe that. It's the opposite. Even if they aren't religious, they believe such rumors are true.

lol. Let me tell you a story. My father's family are Jews and they are from Russia. Back in the 50's, they told my father he couldn't learn English, because he "didn't have the tongue for it." So they made him learn German instead. He speaks English now, and doesn't remember a word of German.

Russia is a pretty horrible place. My grandparents had to pretend they were just going on vacation to flee the country. That's how bad it is. They're obsessed with being 'Russian', and nothing else. So if you're a religion other than Catholic, or are homosexual, or a feminist, or liberal, etc, you're called a "Western Sinner" and they don't want you around.

A woman was arrested recently in Russia for being an outspoken Feminist. You can also get jailed if you speak English in public. It's pretty crazy

You're being purposefully ignorant of the climate there, for whatever reason. There have been a large surge into anti-gay attacks in Russia lately. A man was sodomized with beer bottles and had his head crushed under a rock for coming out. A woman was attacked in a gay bar and had glass thrown into her eyes. A group of protestors who were only ~kissing~ were violently assaulted by a large crowd. These things weren't made up by the meany anons, they are actually happening. And it's disgusting that you're purposefully ignoring it to be a whiteknight.

hmmm. For me personally, I'm taking all the "Russia sucks" sentiment to mean "the Russian government and dominant cultural attitude sucks", which I can get behind 100%. I don't think anyone here actually hates all Russians or thinks they are all horrible people.

Oh, I don't think the entire population is anything, but even though the news we get here is watered down and mostly useless, I haven't seen any real public outcry, either. It's just depressing that Putin's doing this and it seems like no one is opposing him.

If they are, i wish *that* would get reported. All i'm seeing is 'LGBT people/families are trying to escape, here's how to get asylum'.

Ok, I am curious as to why you think Catholicism is the dominant religion. I kind of skimmed that part before, since I couldn't remember, but I did a little quick research, and it seems to be Russian Orthodoxy. Is that not correct?
