I know absolutely nothing about surfing beyond what tv/movies show. But it sort of bums me out to think they're not being accurate, or safe.

Although Home and Away always show characters getting loads of lessons (mostly on land) before they hit the water so... maybe good? (also regular accidents)

Also, surfing? Very cool. Wish I wasn't scared of the water, I can only doggy paddle. (And Now I'm done rambling)

You can say that about basically any sort of different thing they do in shows/movies.

You'll see people riding horses for the first time and they'll look like a natural and already cantering around when getting to that takes a while. People are almost always nervous the first time they get on a horse and can't sit right.

[Picture is a person with a full-body skin-tight surfing suit holding a surfing board in their arms and walking into the waves of a beach. The sun is glaring down at them.]

I grew up surfing and it's still a huge part of my life. Surfing movies make me cringe because too many newbies try to surf without really getting any instruction or trying to be safe.

Surfing is awesome but I wish the movies would either show safe practice or just stop.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

It's a good thing I'm land locked. If I had easy access to wavy waters, I probably would have drowned or broken my neck by now because of how cool movies and cartoons make it look.

I'm sorry, OP.

This for me too. I can't even swim very well....

I understand how you feel, I'm the same way about horseback riding in movies.

Welcome to my life as an equestrian, one, its rarely portrayed accurately, two, rarely do they show how to do it safely. Then I get an influx of greenhorns who want me to teach them to jump Olympic level in a matter of weeks.

Drives me INSANE

I've been riding (very casually) almost all my life. My mom was a big horse person, and while I was never as into it as she is, I still enjoy it. I took a pretty nasty fall a few years ago (was riding bareback on my still kind-of-skittish young horse, and my dad came running out of the bushes running yelling like a mad-man), and have been nervous to even gallop. Granted, I do mostly Western style riding, but I've never jumped and I don't think I'd be up for it if I did. =S

Are you okay? No residual injuries? :(

The newbies just lack such common sense, like, this animal outweighs you by 1000lb, don't try to fight it, you won't win.

Maybe if you take a couple of lessons your confidence will come back?

Sidenote, it's especially funny because I'm a dressage trainer. I do cavaletti work for cross training, and jump small things, but it's not my specialty. So, it's always good for a laugh when they come. LOL!

A-Okay. I'm actually not sure if I had any injuries at the time (other than getting winded pretty bad) or if it was more the shock of falling for the first time in my actual memory (Guess mom put me on a horse when I was two and I kind of fell off, but other than that, it had been the only time I fell in about 13 years or so).

I was thinking riding lessons might be nice sometimes, though. =)

My mom though, a couple years ago, had a pretty bad fall when she was barrel racing though, and ended up seperating her shoulder. Lucky for her, I'm a massage therapist, so I work on it when it starts getting sore, but here we are like, four years later, with it still bothering her. =(

"my dad came running out of the bushes yelling like a mad-man"

Oh man, what was he thinking? :/ I'm sorry to hear you fell.
Some people have no clue how to act around certain animals. Reminds me a bit of one of my uncles who thought it was wise to "test" the abilities of my dog who is trained to guard our garden. My uncle just hopped over the fence one night and my dog was so quickly on top of him, he couldn't even count to three. Thankfully he wasn't injured since my dog recognized it was him as soon as he jumped him.

I've actually never figured out exactly what he was thinking. =/

But yikes, I feel like that could have ended very badly!

I love surfing movies and have zero desire to surf. They're just so pretty!!
I think you're over thinking this (because everything in movies is unrealistic, and stupid people are going to be stupid regardless) but I understand how hard it is not to...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
My sympathies, anon.

Personally, I would really like it if someone ever had fencing to any degree...bonus points if it isn't some snooty asshole sport, but I take what I can get...

That sucks and you honestly see it with anything. People have mentioned horseback riding but you also see it in any sport, really. Hollywood doesn't care about safe an accurate representation. They care about money and that's about it.

Sorry, OP.

it's not even just sports - I side-eye Backdraft so frickin' hard [you can't jump from one fire escape to another in full turnout gear!] because my father's a 25yr vet and Backdraft is a movie he used as a lecture as *what* not to do since our probies thought Bull was the awesome when it came out

Yeah, you can pretty much apply this thinking to anything Hollywood represents, even Hollywood itself.
