inspired from FFXV threads hoping for slash..

What are your favorite gay Final Fantasy couples, and which couples do you think have the most subtext? Interesting interactions that could be interpreted as gay. Basically, what gay couples do you think are the closest to canon or set off your gaydar? (canon hetero love interests can be disregarded)

The pairings that come to mind:

Fang/Vanille (pretty much read like lesbians, tbh)
Cloud/Barret (canon date option)

..any others? from the older Final Fantasies, too.

Cecil/Kain and Cloud/Zack I guess

I don't ship it and there isn't much subtext, but one moment I remember vividly was Zidane and Vivi from IX peeing together, with Zidane talking about how it was some kind of manly right of passage? And Eiko was listening in on them or something...

Dunno, it's been ages since I've played IX. I need to replay it someday.

Yeah, that's totally in the game! One of the more famous scenes, I think. It's also definitely a big brother/little brother bonding kind of thing, though... I definitely wouldn't consider that scene to be remotely slashy or anything.

I just recently replayed IX, it's definitely one of my favorites (if not my favorite) in the series! The world is so beautiful and engaging and every character is great... I've never gotten why it's not that popular.

One slashy thing you might be able to see is Zidane/Amarant. Though this is mostly one sided on Amarant's part. He spends a good amount of time in the game trying to get revenge on Zidane because Zidane framed him for a theft he committed. Then, once he is defeated but not killed by Zidane he decides to follow the hero around and learn from him. His general demeanor is one almost like a tsundere since he's very standoffish at the beginning and then becomes very loyal. I personally don't ship it but I could see why people would.

Yeah, I was actually just thinking of that too! If Amarant had gotten more screen time I think it would be more obvious, but he's just not that important in the long run and ended up kind of unremarkable instead. (at least, to me...)

No, that's very true. He's the least fleshed out character. Beyond what I said we really know nothing of him.

People are probably bound to think their favorite pairings have the most subtext (and I'm no different), so it's a pretty tough question. But! I'll love Zack/Cloud forever and ever, Jecht/Auron, and I also think Seifer had a thing for Squall. There's a lot more than those, of course, but they're my three favorites.

I always like Squall/Seifer, too. in a sorta teenage guys love/hate sexual experimentation obsession sort of way (is that even a way? lol). ~~frankly Squall had more sexual tension with Seifer than he did Rinoa.~~

Yes, precisely! I'm a big fan of that kinda rivalslash, what can I say~ And yes, I agree with that last sentiment as well. Thank God for fics/fanart/doujinshi.

ETA: my favourite FF subtext m/m is Arc and Alus in FFIII. They are the most adorable thing in the entire series.

Yeah, Fang/Vanille... I dunno, but I'm not sure how they could be read any other way. Really really really close friends? lol The "reunion" scene (first scene together) where Vanille grabs Fang's boob and Fang lifts up her skirt pretty much is all you need to know to make a conclusion. I wish SE would just go out and confirm it.

This. It's funny how if Fang was a guy no one would even be questioning whether it was subtext or not. They'd accept it as canon.

It's not even THAT far off in terms of tone from how Balthier/Fran was played in FFXII, in that there's lot sof togetherness and innuendo and it's only in one scene close to the end where there's any confirmation that they're actually a couple. Fang/Vanille is much more explicitly romantic. But yeah, it is always worth saying 'What if Fang was a guy?'

I'm with people on Cloud/Zach and Seifer/Squall. I remember getting a date with Barret :D He also had some other slashy moments with Cloud as well. I ship it. I always thought Cloud was bisexual when I played FFVII.

I also ship Reno/Rufus... but the subtext is way lighter than Cloud/Zach or Cloud/Sephiroth.

not much for subtext but I love Aeris/Tifa.

Yeah, I have a few f/f FF ships I like (Celes/Terra, Aeris/Tifa, Beatrix/Garnet, for instance) but off the top of my head I can't actually think of any aside from Fang/Vanille that have much of subtext at all -- Aeris/Tifa is about the closest pairing to them I can think of, which is a pretty big difference. Maybe I'm overlooking something, but I can't think of anything...

Yuna/Rikku? Also Yuffie/Aeris if you squint, Yuffie had a pretty strong reaction to you know what

Ahhh, FFX and X-2 are totally a blur to me now so, maybe?

I always read Yuffie's reaction as a result of her being the youngest in the party and not having taken anything very seriously until then ... so that suddenly happening really shook her up badly. Of course, it's really hard to read subtext into Yuffie/anyone given her lack of interaction with the party, really.
(I'd read that fic if someone wrote it, though.)

Hmm, yeah, at least Aeris/Tifa have a bunch of interactions, and contrary to popular belief they certainly aren't all about Cloud. Aeris seems the flirty type, and she seemed like she was playfully teasing Tifa at the beginning even if Tifa was kinda pissed off. But throughout the game past that? Tifa defends Aeris's humanity to Hojo, they always go off talking together whenever the party splits, finishing each other's sentences, and of course Tifa's brushing Aeris's bangs aside and crying when she dies. I think it's a legitimate pairing, even though it's probably better interpreted as friends, or friends that make out when they're drunk at best.

Besides Fang/Vanille, other FF couples though? I don't think there are any to that extent by far. Then again, I don't think any of the m/m pairs are that blatant either, haha. Maybe the girls in FFX-2 though? FFV has good girl action, too, but sadly no specific examples come to mind.

Only kind of serious, but Gilgamesh/Bartz, one sided?

My 'ships: M/M Cecil/Kain and Gippal/Baralai, really are the only ones that ever really struck me.

F/F, I'm a bit more free with - more or less serious 'ships: Yuna/Rikku is my top 'ship in the series (the fact I also 'ship Rikku with Gippal made for some interesting scenarios in my head). A bit of Tifa/Aerith. Less serious: Yuffie/Tifa, Fran/Penelo, Penelo/Ashe, Lena/Feris, Yuna/Lulu. Completely not serious, but, seriously: Leblanc/All Three Gullwings.

The ones I can see actual subtext to, rather than just 'they'd be a cute couple, if they actually wanted to' - Cecil/Kain, Yuna/Rikku, and Tifa/Aerith. (Especially Yuna/Rikku...)

Now I really want to play XIII. v_v'

Oh my god, play XIII. It is melodrama trollmode and the gameplay is excruciatingly dull until you get magic to play with, but the characters are beautiful broken versions of JRPG stereotypes and the narrative has a more original structure than that of pretty much any other RPG I've ever played. Just do it, then come back and yell about how much you hate all of the characters all the time.

I really, really wish I could play it.

But I don't have a PS3, and won't be able to afford one any time soon. I can't even replay X, X-2 and XII, since my PS2 isn't working right.

That sucks :( At least the new console generation should make used PS3s absurdly cheap by christmas?
