I think she'd make a good mentor too.

Recently I saw an interesting, if somewhat obvious, statement on the matter. One of the most important parts of a story is its premise, claimed the man whose book I was reading, and the premise has really nothing to do with the setting of the story. Technically, it matters little if the character is a talking cartoon pony or an outwardly average human being; their essence is still the same.

So, yeah. Who wouldn't want an awesome mentor like this? No matter what body they come with.

I like that way of looking at it, and I'd be interested to know what book this was, because it sounds like something worth checking out.

It's How to Write a Damn Good Novel by James N. Frey. The aforementioned claim was made in the second edition of the book (How to Write a Damn Good Novel II: Advanced), and I have yet to see the first one, but overall it's very good both for enhancing one's understanding of how fiction works and as an (opinionated) writing guide. :)

One of my friends really looks up to me, and she says that I'm like the Princess Celestia to her Twilight Sparkle (she also says I'm Batman and she's Robin, so you get what our relationship is like). I'm honored that she relates me to her, but I don't feel that I'm at the same level as Celestia. She's very kind and composed, while I'm very-easily stressed out and have a short fuse. That's far from princess-like, wouldn't you think?

I don't blame you for wanting Celestia as a mentor. She's one of my favorite characters, and you can tell she's very genuine in the way she acts, despite all of the dumb fanon interpretations of her. She knows when to be soft and when to be serious.

Plus she has a pretty mane. :3

Ahh yeah Celestia shares the space with characters like Gandalf and Dumbledore when it comes to fan interpretations of their character. People see a character that has great political and personal power, and also seems to be a great person morally and they think to themselves,"there has to be some great flaw or dark secret to this person, they can't be as good and nice as the canon portrays them".

So we end up with evil Dumbledore, Tyrantlestia, and now are starting to see Evil Twilight Sparkle fics increase, since obviously she is going to fall into corruption within seconds of becoming a princess. Because some fans just can't accept that authority isn't all secretly corrupt, tyranical, and controlling. Of course once you compare this to the opposite reaction of some fans to relentlessly woobify any villain with any sort of sympathetic back story you end up with a lot of stories that have an evil Celestia fighting a good, heroic Luna; Usually also portrayed as progressive and free-spirited compared to the conservative controlling Celestia (despite the fact Luna spent the last 1000 years on the moon, and Celestia spent that time leading one of the most idealistic, progressive fictional kingdoms in recent cartoon history).

Still, there is plenty of heart-warming celestia fics and pictures out there that portray her as a loving ruler, role model or surrogate mother for twilight, or even shipping stuff if that's what your into. Despite the troll and pervert memes that surround her, I think most people acknowledge that canon Celestia is still the mother/mentor character that does genuinely love all her little ponies.

na

Is there any evil Gandalf out there?
I think some people refer to Gandalf as a troll, just like they do with Dumbledore and Celestia, but I think I've never seen tyrannical Gandalf fanon or fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
There's some evil Gandalf, usually when its a self-insert story using the movie versions of the characters, Gandalf gets cast as an antagonist stopping the SI from attaining her TWU-LUV.

Admittedly with Gandalf it more often comes down to making him look incompetent to raise other characters the author likes better on a pedestal. He doesn't get it nearly as bad as Dumbledore (honestly even Celestia doesn't get it as bad as Dumbledore), but Gandalf seems to be the go-to fall guy when you want to make your OC or other canon characters look better by comparison.

The nearest I have seen to evil!Gandalf (given that I don't read fics with OC protagonists) is that Gandalf can get too distracted by what he's doing that he misses how some people are affected.

He's too busy running around fighting Necromancers and finding out what's going on with magic rings to realize dragging Bilbo along on the Company's quest is what would end up with Bilbo losing Bag End permanently (that is a basic gist of at least one fic I have seen).

I have yet to see him cast as outright evil. He is cast as a troll in the internet sense of someone who plays jokes and sits back and laughs at minor misunderstandings, but it's usually about things that in the long run won't mess the whole of Middle Earth up.

Addendum: I think a lot of what happens to Gandalf in fic is more humanizing him. He is, technically, an angel in human form, so people seem to play on how he's not some perfect ideal being.

holy shit, op, me too

I would settle for having her leading my nation/the world, if if she couldn't lead me

an infinitely kind and patient being who loves all her subjects and who tries her hardest to always be fair and understanding, and only really gets angry when someone attacks her subjects or when you really screw up, and even then her losing her composure is still pretty damn stoic and calm compared to like, everyone else

also has a great sense of humor

it makes you wonder what the catch is

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The catch is that she tried to banish her sister to the moon forever.

[Picture is Princess Celestia from the cartoon "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic". She is a pure white horse with wings and a horn. Her mane and tail are flowing as if being pushed by a wind current, with pastel blue, green, purple and pink stripes. She is wearing a golden crown with a purple gem in it, a golden torc around her neck and part of her chest, and is sitting down on a purple rug, with cushions around her. She is writing on a pierce of parchment with a red quill and ink, levitating the quill with magic. She is in a room that might be a lounge room or a bedroom, with purple and blue decorations, and a wall with pictures of the stars.]

I wish I had a mentor like her. I know that sounds silly, but I really admire the way she believes in and encourages Twilight, pushes her in the right direction, and isn't afraid to be stern with her when she needs to be, not to mention her ability to admit when she's wrong.

Those are great qualities and all, but it still feels like a little odd to want a talking cartoon pony as a mentor.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah celestia is a pretty cool character her voice actor Nicole Oliver, really sells the wise mentor role, and she is written well for mostly being an exposition dump and quest giver in function.

Hell even if she was still a giant talking magical pony I'd vote for her for president.

I joke about Celestia being Equestria's favorite tyrant, but honestly, her song at the end of season 3 was very touching.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know this isn't the point at all, but how the fuck does a pony use a quill pen?

Magic.

[personal profile] byonicluna 2013-08-06 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
The picture doesn't show it because the magical glow is missing, but ponies with horns can levitate small objects very easily.

The ponies without horns somehow write with their mouths. (It looks as awkward as it sounds.) They've only shown them using writing tools like pencils, though.
