Vacations!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-08-03 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got back from my week long vacation back home. Drove straight through from SC to OK (20 hour drive).

The trip was equal parts miserable and wonderful! I loved seeing my family (especially my nieces and new nephew). The accommodations left a lot to be desired and South Carolina was at like 80% humidity the entire time. :X But my oldest sister made us some wonderful meals (with vegetables from her garden). Not my favorite vacation (that was the mountains) and not my worst (week long camping trip).

Since summer is wrapping up, tell me about some of your vacations F!S!!!

I have done nothing but travel this Summer (yay no Summer job?) so I have been a lot of places among those:

I started the summer going to Riga (Latvia) for a weekend with my Father and stepmother, we also meet up with my step brother as he lives in Riga (studying medicine). We didn't do a lot, but it was nice and I bought some books. I also took some pictures, but I don't think any of them are any interesting tbh.

I've also been in Sweden visiting my mother (she bought a flat there a couple of months ago), and we went to Ikea and spent some time on the beach, oh and we went to look at the Picasso statue that is close to where she lives.

And now I am back in the county I grew up in, right now visiting my grandparents, but I went to a wedding last weekend. It was outdoors and thunder and lightning through the whole ceremony, it only started raining when the happy couple started walking indoors. Coolest wedding I've ever been too!

You have had the most exciting summer! I took a lot of pictures from our trip but mostly of my nephew. : / Not a lot of scenic stuff in South Carolina (at least to me). One day I hope to take a road trip where I actually stop to look at places.

Also, I would love to visit Sweden! And I am glad the wedding went well. :D

I dunno, didn't go anywhere especially new except Riga, but I've had fun. I miss my flat though!

You have to show us! And I am sure there are a lot of cool stuff in South Carolina!

I might post some pictures, either on F!S or in my journal if I ever get around to it

Why not Norway? *pout* I am pretty sure they will not forget it, when they said yes (we use yes instead of I do), it was thunder and it was perfectly timed!

I went on a cruise to Haiti and Puerto Rico. I got a facial, did zip lining, went snuba (it's like scuba and snorkling combined) diving, ate a ton of food, hit the gym, and spent hours lounging in the sun like a very happy lizard. It was great.

Then I got home, went into work, and my boss laid me off.

That asshole. :< My sister's boyfriend was fired two weeks before our trip to SC. She told him not to bother finding a new job until we get back. : /

At least the trip was enjoyable! I would love to visit another country one day.

He was an asshole. That's why I wasn't so upset. It was a high stress job. After a few months, I went to work for JC Penney's. Retail wasn't my dream, but I have nothing bad to say about that store. The pay was low, but the job was low-stress and it could be fun at times. I mean, where else can you dress up a mannequin as superman?

Anyways, the guy went out of business not long after that soooooo....

You should definitely make plans to visit another county. Niagra Falls in Canada is pretty and everybody speaks English, so that would be a good place to start.

What's a vacation? Seriously, I'm envious of people who get to take vacations.

I guess the closest thing to a vacation I've had this summer is the time when I made vague plans to go to the beach, but was unable to go because fuck work.

NooooooOOOooooooo. :( Next time I go on a vacation (probably in another three years), I will come and kidnap you and take you. I hope you enjoy mountains.

I just came back to Florida from Indiana to visit the relatives. I was surprised by how not awful the drive was. Went out of our way to hit Graceland and St. Louis, a cavern in IN, Stone Mountain GA, and lo, we were home. It was pretty cool to see the Gateway Arch. I always thought it looked boring in photos but it's badass in real life. Like an alien structure. I liked it.

I wish we could have stopped to see some stuff, but alas work on Monday. If you ever want to see some good caverns, try Ruby Falls in TN (I think Chattanooga?).

I used to love in Stone Mountain before I moved to Arizona at the beginning of June. How'd you like it?

One of my bucket list items is to visit a country across the ocean. Any country. Maybe I should go to Hong Kong!

i recommend it! Theres less of a language barrier than some other asian countries and its really diverse. Affordable too: i stayed at a really nice hostel for about 24usd per night, and you can eat well and get around for less than 100usd a day.

Canadian here, and while I've been to France and England in the past, for the value of $ spent, my very favourite vacations have been road-tripping in the US. We picked up a National Park pass and hit every national park we could reach in the Southwestern US. I have a special love for southern Utah (Moab!), Zion! Carlsbad Caverns is fabulous, we loved Santa Fe. Sadly, Big Sur was totally fogged in and I mistook it for Transylvania. We even went to see Carhenge in Nebraska. Love the National Parks, love the quirky roadside attractions, and love that there are hotels/motels everywhere and I can just wander where I want.

I'll be back for more road-tripping!

I haven't been on a proper vacation this summer, although I did spend a day in New York City.

BUT. I wanted to share with you as regards the family visit/long drive, since my husband and I drove to Florida last Thanksgiving. It's a roughly 22 hour drive, and we went straight through both ways (apart from stopping to grab food, of course). The hotel we stayed at was not the best (weird smell; lights in the bathroom were wonky; staff didn't give a fuck); it was colder than expected; and my parents-in-law were a little...out there. But I got to meet my brother-in-law and his wife, who are fucking awesome, and I had some truly fantastic food.

Oh god, I know how it is. We stopped to get food and such. My brother's house was AWFUL! It smelt like cats and dogs and pee. And there were fleas eating us up. And the air mattress kept deflating. Fortunately our other family members were able to accommodate us. We spent our last night in a hotel and pretty much same experience. But I guess you get what you pay for and we were being cheap. :P

I went to Los Angeles for E3 and it was great, not as hot as SoCal usually is and I saw awesome stuff and spent time with some of my best friends.

I'd like to go to PAX Prime but I don't know if it'll happen :(

I'd love to visit CA one day. The farthest I have been West is Oklahoma. I'd also to go to some kind of huge convention (of any kind). Maybe I can combine those two.

WHICH VACATION DO YOU WANT ME TO TELL!?

Seriously though, which? I've been to so many places over the years both inside the country and out I've been having trouble making a timeline of all the places I have visited.

Do you want to know about the most exotic place I've visited inside the country? Do you want to know the most historical place I have ever visited? Do you want to know the most impromptu vacation I've ever had? Or do you want to know the most farthest place I have ever been, whether it be East or West?

WHICH ONE, KAIJIN!?!

ALL OF THEM! Let me live vicariously through you!!!!!!!

Also, I enjoyed a great deal of that music you posted. I didn't tell you earlier because like 3 days into my trip I used all my data and could not use the internet on my phone. D: Apparently Tumblr is a data hog.

Glad your trip was at least successful. How were the travel apps people recommended last time? Any you liked?

I haven't vacationed at all during the summer, since I work 6 days a week. But I did go to Chicago for a weekend trip back in April and went to South Carolina/Biltmore/Atlanta in May. My next adventure is Europe in September.

I hope you have fun in Europe. Honestly I think it is probably better not to go during the summer. Less tourists that way! And Biltmore is really nice.

I didn't use most if the apps because they did not have the features I wanted. But I did use one of the sites (they had an ios but not an android app). I have it bookmarked on my computer that I can pull up if you want it. I am on mobile right now.
