May I ask why?

The age of consent is also 14 in The Netherlands (or was it raised to 15?), 16 in Scandinavia and so on.

Yeah but it's a little weird to be super focused on that, isn't it, especially if you're from a country where both the laws & the social mores are totally different. Hyper-awareness of that is a little... ehhhhhh.

I wouldn't know, I don't live in a society that cares a lot about teenagers having sex (with each other), we just hand out free condoms and have sex ed and tell them to make sure they are ready before they do it. When it comes to adults having sex with teenagers, in most cases that is creepy no matter what the age of consent is.

I know about the age of consent for the same reason I know the legal drinking age in different countries, because when I was younger I looked it up and I still remember it.

With the caveat that everyone draws the creepy line in different places and for very good reasons creepy is not reason enough on its own for something to be illegal.

When it comes to adults having sex with teenagers, in most cases that is creepy no matter what the age of consent is. I know about the age of consent for the same reason I know the legal drinking age in different countries, because when I was younger I looked it up and I still remember it.

Yeah, exactly. That's why it's creepy. That's what I'm saying. I certainly don't care about teenagers having sex.

(I'm assuming that the people OP is talking about are adults, not teenagers, and that they're doing this repeatedly and focusing on it)

ITS 15 IN DENMARK? IMAGINE ALL THE SEX I COULD HAVE HAD ON MY HOLIDAYS OVER THERE!

I did not know that (then again you guys have always been a bit different than us up north), I know it is 16 for drinking though? Which reminds me the first time I was legally drunk was in a camping spot thingy in Denmark the summer I turned 16.

True, we do sometimes run around in our own little world. And yeah, I think it's 16 (used to be 15, they changed it around the time I was 16. Voting, driving, buying cigarettes and getting into clubs are all 18).

You do, but we do love you <3 Voting, buying cigarettes and driving is 18 here (well driving mopeds/tractors are 16), 18 for any alcohol with less than 21% and 20 for any alcohol above 21%, getting into clubs are somewhere between 18 and 23 depending on the club.

The age of consent is only 14, if the other person is also close to 14 in age though. The way you phrase it makes it seem like any 30 year old could go after a 14 year old and be perfectly fine. Which, uh, very much not the case.

Not in Iceland, in Spain it is 13 and both those laws just specify that you can't trick someone under the age of 18 to have sex with you, either with gifts or harassment... And in Norway if you are 16 there is no upper limit of whom can have sex with you (as long as no force is used), I am pretty sure Denmark (15) and Sweden (16) have the same rules, though I am no expert. (I had to look up those ages, though I knew Iceland was lower than Norway)

We don't punish someone who is 16 if s/he has sex with a 15 year old (as long as both wanted to do it), and two 15 year olds are not doing anything illegal.

Well, neither does America. At least in most places - I'm pretty sure where I am, it's as long as you're within a year or two of the person, it's acceptable. But it's a state by state thing so there probably are some ridiculous states where someone might punish someone for that.

There was a case a number of years ago where a 13-year-old had sex with a 12-year-old and they were both charged with statutory rape.

I wish I could remember what state it happened in.

Might have been California. They have this RIDICULOUS law that anyone who has sex with someone under 18 - even if they're under 18 themselves - is charged with a misdemeanor. No close-in-age clauses at all. Which means that if two seventeen-year-olds have consensual sex with each other in California, they're both charged with a misdemeanor for having sex with a minor.

New Jersey has an age of consent of 16 but only if the older partner is not more than four years older than the younger partner.

That is nice. I was just responding to your assessment that the age of consent in the Netherlands is 14. Which it really really is not. Next time you go around stating fact you might want to, you know, check them first.

In the Netherlands, any manner of sexual acts under the age of 12 are completely illegal.
Sexual acts committed between the age of 12 and 16 are legal unless a complaint is filed. Which generally translates to two kids of equal of close ages having sex is fine, an adult have sex with a 14 year old is not.
Sexual acts committed after the age of 16 are completely legal

(this, of course, assumes all consenting parties)

I actually think it was a teacher in high school whom told me that fact, I never felt the need to look up the specifics of the law, so there is that? Or possibly somewhere on television, or a quiz. Now I am really wondering why we keep saying the age of consent is 14 in The Netherlands...

Though that does not justify me stating a fact that is wrong, I should probably have used Iceland as an example instead of The Netherlands, but as I can't turn back time...

I keep forgetting that age of consent is handled differently in other countries, which does not justify me being wrong about something, but I am used to the fact that the age of consent is the age of consent and it is only one age.

You know what makes you an asshole? The fact that making_excuses responded calmly and rationally to this; admitted to being wrong; and thanked you for correcting him/her, yet you have yet to say anything in response.

The reason I have not said anything in response is cause I was not online. It is saturday night, man, and it is not exactly a hugely thrilling day here on fandomsecrets.

I am not concerned with humiliating others, I am not even concerned with humiliating <user="making_excuses">. They made an incorrect factual claim which I corrected them on. No biggie. Case closed. I just corrected them on it cause there is a tendency amongst certain corners of the internet and media to paint the Netherlands as some highly depraved country (weed, low age of consent, killing grannies, oh my!) which it really ain't. It's a pretty boring place, actually.

I googled age of consent The Netherlands in Norwegian and came across a News Article talking about age of consent in different countries and how to protect our own teenagers from old men/women.

I am also Norwegian, and I know the laws of my neighbouring countries, because well I am taught them either in school or through media...

It isn't like I will ever need this information.
