Re: Had a shocking moment of realization today

I can never understand why people get so offended by Autism Speaks. Apparently it's because they think autism is a bad thing and are hoping to cure it, which...why is that wrong? It's a disability, and while it may have its benefits for some, for the majority, it still makes their lives a lot more difficult. If you think of your disability as part of your identity and would never get rid of it, that's all well and good, but please, don't be so selfish as to say finding a cure for people who do want it gone would be the most offensive thing ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that it 's just the way they do it .

You know what offends me? Seeing their PSA where other parents say they would like to kill their children and themselves. The fact that their board members have said that they wished their own autistic children would drown .

It's the fucking fact that altogether they're shifty and are pushing this idea on parents that having an autistic child is HORRIBLE . They only concentrate on how much it sucks and how "difficult" autistic people are.

I wouldn't mind if they found a cure to help people. But it feels like their approach is "stamp out the autistics"

They won't even let a person on the spectrum be on their board. Which gives the idea that they're trying to speak for people with autism. For a group that calls themselves Autism Speaks, that's pretty damn fucking hypocritical.

I'm not against the idea of a cure. I find Autism Speaks offensive because their actions are speaking louder than words and their actions seem to be screaming "we just want you gone".

Why don't you think from another perspective , and not be so lazy as to assume it's about my identity.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
How is it lazy to not know something? I might not have learned that if I'd just googled it. I'd rather hear the reasons for people's opinions from them, rather than try and figure them out from objective materials.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
It was annoying that you immediately jumped to telling someone they were selfish and fucking shaming them for how they felt and trying to make them feel bad for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry. I guess I was out of line....I'd cut out my own brain if I thought it would cure me, so I get pretty offended about people possibly saying there shouldn't be cures and all....

Thanks

I understand.

Different people have different experiences with it. I just worry about AS's methods and how they intend on doing it.

Also some of the things from their PSA were disturbing. Like the mother who talked about committing double suicide/homicide with her autistic daughter in the room, as if the daughter wouldn't hear or have feelings about it. Also the families in the PSA were told to stop therapy for their children for awhile so the kids would "act more autistic".

I understand and believe that a cure would be a good thing to have, but at the same time should be treated carefully and not forced upon someone who doesn't want it. Just because the idea of someone forcing a thing that will change the way my body functions is kind of disturbing to me. But I wouldn't say there shouldn't be a cure for those that do want it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on what part of the spectrum their child is at. If their autistic child is nothing more than an angry drooling baby for their entire life, then yes, I can see why these parents would be upset.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
One of their people said that they want autism to be a "word for the history books" They're not about giving a cure for people who want it, they're all about "no more autistics period"

Please don't be so selfish as to to attack someone who is hurt and offended when a group claiming to speak for them can do nothing but spread fear about them and people like them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I see from the person above you that they go about it in disturbing ways, and that's something to be upset about. But the part you said? It's an absolutely horrible thing to grow up with and no child should be forced to go through that. Methods of propaganda aside for the moment, I can't see anyone opposing the idea that a disability should be cured worldwide, future generations included. I don't get that.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's true.

But it can take on a different meaning based on the actions of the company,a and suggest different things. If the company went about it in a better way , and advocated finding ways to work around autistic children's challenges while still acknowledging that it can be hard to live with. If it allowed people who were mildly on the spectrum on their board to give a perspective of an autistic person. If it stressed 'hope for autistic children' rather than 'your child's diagnosis is dooming them'. Then if it did all that it would be fine and it wouldn't be offensive.

But the way they do it now it makes them sound like their goal is 'get rid of autistics for their own good'.

Imagine there are two groups claiming to be advocating poor people. One's actions seem to point to actually helping the poor people while the other constantly talk about how horrible poverty is, and have PSAs and TV spots where people talk about how they wish they could kill themselves because they are poor and the board members of the group are all rich people and they refuse to let anyone who has ACTUALLY BEEN POOR to be on their board, but just people who knew poor people, or had a neighbor that got their house foreclosed.

Again ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. People are offended by Autism Speaks because of a combination of actions and words that take on a shifty meaning because of said actions.

People with autism have every right to be offended by Autism Speaks. Not because they're selfish but because Autism Speaks' actions spell out 'here we'll just act on your behalf without actually taking YOUR input until you're normal like us' .

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I get it now. And the whole "we're Autism Speaks, but autistics can't speak" is, just, how blockheaded do you have to be? Sorry I didn't look into this more before I posted. I wonder if there's an actual good organization out there that still advocates "making it history" but is....more like a foundation and less like 18th century missionaries.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh it's fine. :)

I think there are. http://autisticadvocacy.org/ < this one is about autistic advocating for themselves.

(That's all I really know at the moment.)

I think I was really emotional too after reading that stuff. It would be nice to have a cure but from a group I could trust.
