(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Straight into it today.

This isn't about the typical run of gendered insults, We all know the BAD WORDS that are BAD.

Neckbeard - Is it a gendered insult? What about the other insults we level at guys?

Yes, and men can be called cunts, but that doesn't make cunt not a gendered insult, see?

Here is an easy way to know. Is your insult specifically for one gender? Yes? It is a gendered insult. Wow. What was so fucking hard to determine.

I wonder if OP is that same one complaining that case freezes trolling threads before anything fun can happen. But, I mean, if you start with topics like this, what do you fucking expect?

neckbeard is just a physical descriptor

there are some really cool/nice neckbeards out there

Re: Gendered Insults

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it's a descriptor that's used as an insult. Like... sort of like... in a similar ballpark as the insults used to by many dudes to imply women with body hair are lesbians/manhaters/generally an undesirable kind of woman.

It tends to be, but then it gets levelled at people on the internet whose gender is unknown in a way that female-gendered insults tend not to be. Whether this is a function of "unknown = male by default" or straight up "male = default" I have no clue.

Re: Gendered Insults

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an insulting term because neckbeards are physically the ugliest variety of beard. Seriously, why the hell would anyone, male or female, want to have a beard on their neck? It's gross-looking and should be outlawed.

Shave the neck, spare our eyes!

Re: Gendered Insults

Neckbeard is a gendered insult because it came about because of those type of guys at conventions and such that can have below average looks, gross personality, and/or poor hygiene, as well as other factors that make the look of the neckbeard.

I like the idea of using bitch or cunt at guys only because most will get offended for being called the insult commonly used on women that makes their masculinity feels threatened.

Yes, of course, duh.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they're gendered, anybody who says they aren't is an idiot. Things that reference typically cis body parts of whichever sex are clearly gendered.

However I wouldn't consider male and female gendered insults comparable in levels of offensive. Calling someone a bitch has a lot more offensive nuance to it than calling someone a dick due to a long history of women being considered lesser than men by society.

Gendered? Yes
Comparable? No

There ya go, anon.

Re: Gendered Insults

idk, unlike "dick", "neckbeard" has a specific connotation that doesn't apply to just any dude who you think is being a jerk. It refers (at least in my experience) to the sort of person who is very sexist against women to begin with - the one who is always saying nasty things to them online, especially telling them how ugly they are when they are in fact pretty unattractive themselves, largely due to lack of personal hygiene.

So is it gendered? Yes...but it's not used in the same way as "bitch" or "dick" or whatever.

Re: Gendered Insults

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It does not refer solely to the sex of the person (either in itself or by synechdoche or metonymy) and does not imply that simply being a member of that sex is something that you should feel insulted about. Therefore, it is not a gendered insult.

Re: Gendered Insults

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should explain what you mean by gendered insult first? Because the top of my head I think "an insult based on some kind of gender anatomy" but you're clearly going for something else here.

Re: Gendered Insults

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it is. Also 'dudebro' and yeah, 'dick.' (Whether or not actual dicks are 'worshipped' is kind of beside the point to me, because it's definitely a male body part and calling someone a dick definitely has negative connotations.)

'Bastard' may or may not qualify. I'm not sure whether the word was traditionally applied to women? But I rarely if ever hear women called that now, and I always think of someone male when someone says it.

And then there are those words that, although they don't specifically pertain to men, do appear to be somewhat gendered merely by virtue of the fact that they mostly seem to be applied to guys anyway. 'Creep' and 'asshole,' for example--though I have seen women called the latter, it doesn't seem that common and always strikes me as an odd choice of insult.

I'm just not comfortable with the idea of equating disgusting, misogynistic behaviors with undesirable physical traits. Unattractive, sweaty, poorly-groomed men are capable of being respectful to women, and conventionally good-looking and socially presentable men are capable of being sexist douchebags. I see no reason to conflate bad behaviors and attitudes that we rightly want to discourage with insults about physical attributes. It doesn't oppress men as such, because men are still the group in power, but it does give undue weight to the notion that physical appearance is meaningfully related to personal virtue.
