People hating on the 12th Doctor without seeing him in action...grow up!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah okay, we know who the actor is now.

I'm disgusted that I see people passing judgment on him when they haven't seen him act as THE DOCTOR yet. Each actor gives the Doctor a different flavor. We have no idea how he'll play him.

Eleven is my first Doctor. I love him. I also accept Doctor Who is about CHANGE and that means I knew he'd eventually regenerate. I'm okay with that. I'm interested to see what Twelve will bring to the legacy.

I've begun to think people are only hating on him because they love Eleven and what better way to let out the anger than to bash the new guy, right? Of course. Others don't like the actor. So what? Then don't watch the show and shut up about it!

Me? I'm going to give him a few eps to see how I like him.

It's really weird doing a gis search on this guy and realizing one day I'm going to be unable to avoid seeing hyperbolic odes fawning over .gifsets of him on tumblr. And of course the inevitable secrets featuring how much someone hates his stupid face or fantasies about him burping into wheels of cheese or whatever here on f!s.

Doesn't this kind of thing happen every time there's a regeneration?

Anyway I like Thick of It so I'm automatically on Capaldi's side.

Yep. People are quick to forget the, "I don't want Tennant to leave. The new guy looks like an ugly hipster. He has no eyebrows and he's gangly!" hatefest with Smith. Now many of those same fans think Smith is adorable and are doing the same thing with Capaldi.

Matt Smith came under a LOT of fire when he was first casted. He talked about it during the special on sunday - he was young, unknown, and he felt very insecure about his acting at the beginning because of that. The fact that 10 was so loved probably added fuel to the fire.

I'm not surprised. Hopefully Peter Capaldi will be able to bring something new to the role, less quirky and more controlled and sarcastic, closer to 9. But he's a strong actor, I'm not really worried about him, it's the writing we need to worry about.

Hear hear, anon!

Nine was my first Doctor, and I thought I would not adjust to Ten because I hate change, but so far, I haven't minded any of the regenerations. It's always exciting to see what the new Doc will do with the part. :)

I'm actually more interested in this man as the doctor than the previous two. Does he just regenerate randomly, or after a season or whatever?

Re: People hating on the 12th Doctor without seeing him in action...grow up!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, there has to be a major event for him to regenerate. It could be by choice but mainly it's because an incarnation is so physically damaged that a new body has to be created, with a slightly different personality.

Coincidentally, at the end of a season, but there's no set number.

Me too. I don't see him doing the Space Errol Flynn or the Pixie Stix Mad Professor like Tennant and Smith did with their Doctors. I see someone more detached, angrier. Closer to nine. Or maybe more reserved like eight. I am very, very curious.

Eh, from what I've seen in my corner, I'd actually chalk it up to being upset it was someone who wasn't either not white, cis, or male. Which I can understand being upset over, even if they are going to extremes about it.

Most of the wank is over the fact that he's white, a guy, and not gay or trans*. Which is just...lol.

Wow yeah given that they were teasing the new Doctor could actually have been someone other than a white straight dude, I'm totally lmfao at the fact people are upset.

Was anyone who was actually in a position to know or decide actually teasing that?

DA

Steven Moffat did, just before the big reveal, saying Helen Mirren had expressed interest in the role and that "it's time the Queen should be played by a man", or something like that. The host of the special also did, when Matt Smith said in his interview that "he" was the best choice, she said "that could be awkward if it's a woman, you never know, it might happen".

I didn't think it could happen anyway but they didn't need to rub it in.

Well, there was the whole live show where they revealed it, and all the publicity leading up to it. They talked about the possibility of a female Doctor, said 'man or woman' and things like that, and just rambled on and on about how the next Doctor should be different and not a safe choice.

So yes, lots of people who were either in the position to decide the choice or else simply knew it beforehand did tease.

Only tinhatters thought the Doctor would be anyone other than a white man so I've been having a lot of fun laughing at them since the announcement. The show is in enough trouble as it is with Moffat's crappy handling and Matt Smith's pitiful performance. Cast a woman or POC and only the small percentage of viewers who wanted that to begin with will tune in. Especially because casting a POC would retcon 50 years of canon since the Time Lords as a race exclusively resemble whites of European descent.

It was shitty of Moffat to do that but did anyone actually think it was going to happen? It's Moffat! And they admitted to some of the people they considered and it was nothing but white dudes. They're not going to cast anyone else anytime soon and anyone with half a brain knows that.

I think it's less hating on the actor and more hating on Moffat and BBC for playing it safe.

I'm sure he'll do great in the role, it's the production team I don't trust.

I mean

"You want people to be shocked when the name comes out," Moffat is quoted as saying by the LA Times.

"You want people to go, 'No, that would never work!' They did that with Matt, when they announced Matt. It was, 'He's far too young, and he doesn't look right. He's got silly hair.'

"You want people to go, 'Oh, what have they done?' And they always get wrenched out of their comfort zone, and then they find the Doctor again. And there's such a range of what the Doctor can be."

GOD what a gigantic douchebag.

He's the worst.

He's the Brannon Braga of Doctor Who, except even more annoying.

So is Moffat saying people eventually saw the Doctor in Matt? Because the ratings and polls say different.
