If you have never written, it probably won't be good at first. But that is okay. Anyone who tells you they did something perfectly their first time is a damned dirty liar. Honestly, I love when writers and artists show off their first works to show how much they improve.

AWW goddamn that's the sweetest post of the day

I played poker perfectly the first time I tried it. Admittedly, this was because of a combination of a spectacular streak of beginners luck, and the fact that since I didn't really know when my hands were good or bad, nobody else could either. Sometimes you get lucky.

Of course, then the second night out, you think you're good at it, and the run of luck stops ...

Pretty sure BNFs don't actually read new fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. Most of them feel like they're too good to read any one else's fanfic.

What I want to know is, why every knucklehead who never so much as drabbled before thinks that it's oh-so-easy to become a BNF by writing fic. People can be writing fics for years, heck people can be secret undercover professional writers writing fics for fun, and STILL not be BNFs.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not reading the secret as OP wants to become a BNF, but rather that OP wants to actively participate in fandom by writing, and potentially receive attention from the BNFs of the fandom.

OP

True. And they aren't so much BNFs as the people who are most involved in the fandom.

There are no 'wrong reasons' to write. You want to communicate with other fans - that's a pretty normal reason to start writing up all your headcanon ideas into fic. Yeah, your first fic is not going to be perfect but if there's a good idea at the core of it it could easily be good. If there's something in there that's worth talking about, people may well reach back and talk to you. Even if they don't do so at first, if you leave thoughtful comments on other people's fics using the same account, you should get some traffic back even if it's not from the specific people you want validation from. Really though the best way to open contact with BNFs is just to talk to them about their work in detail & ask questions about the specifics - pretty well everyone who writes is a sucker for that.

ETA I am just going to quote from the Homestuck Formspring archive because it is about the best statement I've ever read on this topic:

"ive never thought of myself as a writer at all. more of a storyteller, during loftier musings, and a joke teller all other times. writing is one tool i use to tell stories at the moment. its a craft ive improved, semi-deliberately, only for the sake of improving the storytelling process.

in typing out that reason it sounds weird. is there any other reason to do so? when i listen to aspiring writers talk about stuff i often get the sense theyre in it for more than that. like theyre trying to heal some hole in their aura which is preventing them from truly BEING A WRITER. i dont know."

[Picture is the drawing of a light blue typewriter machine with white keys.]

Writing is something I've always thought about doing, though never really done. But now I'm thinking about writing fic for my fandom. The secret is that instaed of writing for myself, I want to write fanfiction to gain attention from the Big Name Fans in my fandom and maybe have something to talk about with them.

Secret because: I'm scared it won't be any good or I'll hate it because I'm doing it for the wrong reasons. I'll probably find the results disappointing and maybe I'm a little desperate to make friends in my (small) fandom.

People can always tell when you're faking it, just saying.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
do what i'm doing, op

try to write an entire fic, without publishing

you won't show it to anyone

just you

to see if you can write something start to finish

Is a "readon" like a "hard-on" but for books?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I laughed. I'm assuming it's just a spelling error. In that case, if you can't be assed to proofread your secrets, I hope you at least proofread any potential fic you may write.
