Re: warning for sort of anti-trans sentiments?

Hmm, I didn't really see that as anti-trans sentiments. Innnteresting. But I guess better safe than sorry.

Yeah, I don't think those are OP's intentions, but on a second read I figured it was better to warn.

Calling this anti-trans is so much bullshit.

Probably! But I can't think of how else to word it. Any ideas?

If you really feel it's worth warning for, just say "warning for discussion of trans* issues" or gender identity issues.

/non-binary who sees nothing offensive about the secret. People have a right to be pissed at people who are thinking shit like "tall? Must be a trans* woman" "has a flat chest? must be a binding trans* man or non-binary person".

My problem is that a warning for anti-trans sentiments should probably include something that's actually anti-trans rather than a mention of trans people/characters that isn't 100% smiley faces.

It's like warning for every single mention of meat rather than warning for butchery because people don't like slaughterhouse stuff. I mean sure vegetarians and vegans don't like meat but that doesn't mean they're triggered by burgers.

If you labeled a burger "slaughtered animals" that would be overkill.

I know that you're still negotiating how best to do the transcript thing by trial and error. And there've been different opinions about levels of editorialisation. But I really, really, really, really don't think it's your place to impose warnings and value judgements like this on other people's secrets.

Every characterization someone makes in translating something is a value judgment. I don't think it's a big deal, especially since translation!anon seems to be an extremely reasonable person. Just the sort of thing that gets shook out in the process, you know?

Re: warning for sort of anti-trans sentiments?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
but they're not translating....it's a transcript, hence their username. there's no value judgments to be made because they're just copying word for word what the OP had stated.

DA

I've got no dog in the hunt for the secret/its content but IAWTC. If OP puts a trigger warning on the secret, it should go in the transcript, as a part of the secret. If not, not. The outside world does not cater to every single person's "Ew I don't like that make it go away" reaction (quite the opposite in fact) and neither imo should the Internet.

Re: warning for sort of anti-trans sentiments?

On the other hand, I will never understand people who seem offended by the existence of trigger warnings or - le gasp - the considerate people who might use them.

I'm sure they appreciate your input, because they seem to appreciate everyone's input. That said? There is no consistent warning system across the internet, and there are many people who don't warn when they should (usually because they forget, occasionally because they're inconsiderate dicks). Transcript anon is wisely erring on the side of caution because they're a nice person, and it harms exactly no one to attach a possibly inaccurate warning to a fandom secret.

SA

I take your point. But in general if I were the secret-maker I'd be quite fucked off at having a warning like this -with which she almost certainly doesn't agree- treated as part of a transcription. And in this specific case, I think that the warning is actually inaccurate (or at least subjective) enough to actually be counter-productive.

Transcip anon, can I make a suggestion? Perhaps not putting warnings on secrets that don't have warnings? Otherwise it kind of comes across as if you're imposing judgement on the secret/secret maker which...is kinda not cool?

People aren't hurt by overwarning. People are hurt by underwarning.

Why is this such a difficult concept to you people.
