Re: Venting/kink thread.

Joining the venting about kinks. As someone in pretty slash-heavy fandoms, I am getting so very, very sick of A/B/O. Dub-con/non-con/hormone-influenced-con (or whatever you'd like to call it) and impregnation are two very big squicks for me. Make it mpreg, something hideously unnatural and often used as a ridiculous excuse for misogyny against women, and said squick factor is doubled. Some nice, simple vanilla slash is all I ask for. C'mon, fandom.

misogny against women

D'oh. I meant more specifically female characters. I know what misogyny means and am an idiot.

Also tired of omegaverse, and my fandom has about as much het as it does slash.

A/B/O is everywhere and I too am sick of it. And mpreg. And dub-con/non-con passed off as fully consentual. It creeps me out that people apparently think a lot of the things they write are full consent when they are very much not so.

Original A/B/O anon

... I too am sick of it... And dub-con/non-con passed off as fully consentual.

The in-heat thing's basically falling in love with your rapist and having no choice in the matter, which disturbs me on so many bloody levels. Don't even get me started... But no, I don't view it as all consensual, and some authors' idea of the boundary lines creeps me out too.

That and any kink that takes away free will to choose your partner and emphasises the animalistic aspect of sex just doesn't sit well with me.

And another fandom I'm in is Dragon Age - tiny but quite fair on the ratio of slash to het - and it's often done with het. Mages are always Omegas, and I do have to ask, "Aren't they abused enough by the system in this 'verse already?" It's so cliche and constantly used as an excuse for woobifying characters that don't need it; in a dark fantasy 'verse, they're tragic enough as it is.

Wait. What. It shows up in Dragon Age, too? Good God, why? And why mages as omegas? No, no, wait, let me guess: It's usually Anders.

Original A/B/O anon, again

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's always Anders.

It's always, always woobie!Anders. Abused Anders, tortured Anders, raped Anders, Circle Anders... Doesn't he get enough abuse already, without being thrown into an omega!verse?

You get the idea. And usually Bethany or M!Hawke, as well - often paired with him, in the case of het. Mages get all the tropes: soulbonds, odd afterlives, anthro!fic...

Siiiiigh. These are people who can set everything on fire with their minds (Anders whom we actually met while he was setting darkspawn on fire), so of course they're helpless victims. Fandom, why do you do these things.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

A/B/O is one of the many reasons I can't stand the XMFC fandom.

I suppose I should take this opportunity to put on my old-school X-Men fan hat and rant about how in my day we didn't have none of these asswombs or creepy social dynamics in our Xavier/Magneto slashfics.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
XMFC Fandom: Erik/Charles, Completed, English Language Stories: 4227
When I search for Omega: 69 OR 1.6%
When I search for Mpreg: 111 OR 2.6%

So yeah, pick another excuse than 1.6% and 2.6% of the fics.

lolololing forever at Omegastan here.

this ain't ONTD. We don't use those words.

Newsflash: AO3 is not the only place people go to read fic.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh. To be fair it is one of the biggest places. Tumblr has fics but they are hard to find. And I pity anyone who is using fanfiction.net as their mine source. There are a couple more sites here and there, but nothing of the scope of FF.net or Ao3.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

Really? I enjoy ABO and even I have no problem avoiding it.

Sherlock Fandom: John/Sherlock, Completed, English Language Stories: 16623 When I search for Omega: 207. OR 1.24%

Supernatural Fandom: Castiel/Dean, Completed, English Language Stories: 12763
When I search for Omega: 76 OR 0.59%

Teen Wolf Fandom: Stiles/Derek, Completed, English Language Stories: 11934
When I search for Omega: 157 OR 1.3.

So I am calling complete bullshit with this being a problem that isn't EASILY avoidable.

You're being kind of dumb here.

How?

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon

For me, the problem isn't so much the quantity of it per fandom, though there is a lot, as the cliche nature of it and the fact that it hits several of my major squick buttons and is an inherently problematic kink. I'm not condemning people who do enjoy it, but I personally am sick of seeing it at all.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
is an inherently problematic kink.

Because there are no ABO writers who explore the implications of the setting and write about characters who seek equal, consensual relationships within it. There's no way to write ABO that isn't all-rape-and-misogyny, all-the-time.

...Oh wait.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not denying this - but affected consent is still presented as something for someone to enjoy/get off on most of the time, even if not by those authors. It's also a trope where consent issues are inherent, even if they're approached in certain ways. I'm afraid I still think it's generally a fucked-up kink, and don't enjoy the fic that comes out of it.

I didn't intend to start an argument - though "inherently problematic" is rather a loaded phrase, I admit. I'm sure you have a point. There are ways to write this trope that address its potentially problematic elements (and I've tried reading stories that attempt this). But the issues that make up the foundations of an omega 'verse remain, in my eyes.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. Oddly, I think I'm approaching the 'verse from an unusual angle: my kink is for enthusiastic, uncoerced consent, and people care about and who prioritize ensuring that their partners are genuinely willing -- and it's easier to emphasize that in a setting in which that attitude is not the default expectation.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
SA: It's one of mine too (big consent) but for me the 'verse has the opposite effect. Thanks for understanding, anon.

Re: Venting/kink thread.

Well, to be completely fair, having 1% of the fics for a popular pairing falling into just one kink is a huge amount. Statistically significant, no, but if there were only 100 possible kinks, the A/B/O tag still would have more than its fair share.

And I say this as someone who likes and has written A/B/O. It's a very popular trope right now and, of course, it's not just the completed fics that cause overexposure. The XMFC kink meme easily had ten A/B/O prompts a page when I left, and I'm sure that didn't help anyone's dislike of the verse.

I'm surprised the numbers aren't higher in Teen Wolf fandom.

Hey now, even as a fan of non-con, I get a little bit creeped out by dub-con/ABO. Just call it what it is, don't add creepy social dynamics to "excuse" or "justify" it.
