Don't a whole bunch of Japanese girls bleach their hair though?

Mostly brown or reddish, but some definitely blonde, yep.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what, I do the same. I don't think it's whitewashing, though. Lots of Japanese characters have blonde hair.

Do you mean the cut or the (lack of) color? Because I'd assume that's light hair, too. Either blonde or very light brown.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah ... probably best you keep it to yourself.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd assume that was blonde as well. Wouldn't it be colored in if it were supposed to be a darker color?

I see no problem here. If it was not meant to be blond, wouldn't it be colored dark?

It's largely about how to represent a character in a greyscale medium. Tohru's light brown is left untouched; if it was toned, it probably wouldn't be as striking which she picks up Kyo as a cat. On the other hand, there's characters in the Seven Deadly Sins: Diane has her light brown hair completely inked, whereas King has his toned, otherwise all the main characters would just appear to have bleached hair because everyone else has blond or white hair.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I always assume it's blond too. TBF I am also a blond asian and most of my asian friends dye their hair too to light brown if not blond. It's trendy. So w/e? As long as you don't assume 'Tanaka Fujiko' is white I don't see the problem

Reading the manga, I always pictured it light or dark purple... even tho I knew it was brown. It is strange that Tohru's hair isn't coloured in as it looks darker on manga covers and in the anime. Not a very light brown, in my eyes.
starphotographs: This field is just more space for me to ramble and will never be used correctly. I am okay with this! (Ginko (default))

I don't think it's whitewashing, since, um, a lot of manga characters are blonde.

And it's natural to assume something is light-colored when the coloring is... Well, light.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, there are plenty of ~explicitly Japanese~ characters out there with blond hair, red hair, fire engine red hair, pink hair, blue hair, and various other colors that aren't the traditional dark brown or black. I don't think it counts as whitewashing unless you're actually imagining them as white.

What rock have you been hiding under? There's been PLENTY of discussion about the so-called "slur."

Huh, I always did that with Tohru in Fruits Basket and assumed it was just me being a lone weirdo or something. Her hair on the manga covers and in the anime just seems way too dark compared to how it's represented with no coloring/tones in the manga, and always looked "wrong" to me because of how I pictured it as blonde.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Tohru Honda? from the manga "Fruits Basket" and Kyo as a cat. Tohru is a young woman with light skin and has long hair, which in the secret looks white because it's a black and white picture, but is brown in the anime. She is wearing a short-sleeved dark dress. She is cradling in her arms a cat, Kyo, who is colored light gray, but is orange-y blond on the anime. The cat looks content with his eyes closed, like Tohru, and has his head against Tohru's cheek.]

Whenever I read a manga with a character whose hair looks like this, I automatically imagine them as blonde. Even if I know they're a brunette or have light brown hair, my mind always registers them as blondes.

Secret because I'm afraid people will accuse me of whitewashing if I admit this.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I like to pretend they have literal white hair. It's more fun that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that unreasonable for you to subconsciously read hair drawn that way as being the naturally-occurring hair color closest to blank-page-white. It may not be accurate to the character, but I wouldn't call it inherently offensive.

*shrug* to me it registers as light brown. I feel like it's just whatever association you happen to make with it...it would be a reeeeal stretch to call that whitewashing imho

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! It's weirder for me because I actually do live in Asia and don't see any blondes around in everyday life.

I think you misunderstand the actual meaning/concept of whitewashing...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Fruits Basket makes zero fucking sense in this regard. :\ Tohru's hair is dark brown on the colored covers, but stark white on the page, while Yuki's hair is silver in color and waaaay darker than Tohru's on in black and white. WTF? I can't for the life of me imagine her as a brunette either, despite having the colored cover version stare at me all day from the bookshelf.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2013-08-20 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
I do it too. I remember reading a manga where a character had hair like that, and I always imagined her as blonde. I then found out she had reddish-pink hair in official artwork and I was surprised!

[personal profile] nachtmusik 2013-08-21 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I do too. It's kinda hard not to when nothing indicating color is there, so I always just picture the lightest normal hair color. Which is, you know, blonde. Once I'm corrected by official art in color I just get confused lol
