While the characters could exist in an AU, I don't see why there would be those robots in like the Supernatural/Sherlock verse. I could maybe see them in the Marvel verse.

You're basically getting pissed because people are enjoying fandom differently than you? Crossovers and fusion AUs are two different things. The authors are either tagging them wrong or you're looking for your fic in the wrong place.

Aw, I like drift compatibility AUs. I'm not surprised a lot of people want to see their OTPs from other fandoms sharing that particular mode of relationship.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This, yeah, the OTP (or friendship or familyship) potential is off the charts.

I think this is a terminology problem

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to go onto FFR to rant about this, actually.

"Crossover" would be the Pacific Rim characters and setting interacting with and within another fandom's setting, or characters. That's an entirely different thing from a Pacific Rim AU, or a Jaeger AU, in which the characters of another fandom are Jaeger pilots or living in the Pacific Rim universe.

A LOT of people are labelling their Pacific Rim AUs as crossovers, and I can definitely see why someone would be pissed off about this.

That annoys me in every context, really.

I am weird and pedantic / neurotic about crossovers I guess. There are very strict rules (in my head, that I made up, that no one else follows)

I agree completely. That annoys me, too. It's not a big deal but it's disappointing, especially in smaller fandoms, to find new fics in your fandom and then find out they're not about the canon characters.

I'd like to see a rant posted to FFRs about this. I was looking for it actually. I'd like to read what non anons have to say about the issue.

Fusion fics need to DIAF! They are the laziest form of fanfic saving only script fic.
queerwolf: (Default)

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-08-21 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
What. How is that even lazy? There is nothing wrong with wanting to see the characters from one fandom in the universe of another.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Lazier than song fic? You must be joking.

If they're the type that transposes whole conversations and don't change the plotline, yeah, but most fusions I've seen don't do that.

One of the two fusions I am following at the moment concentrates more on how the two main characters interact, than strict adherence to the PR plot. Pity it seems to be on hold while a non-fusion fic is being written (also an awesome fic, because the writer is fucking great at writing damaged characters).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Could someone explain the difference between crossovers and fusion AUs to me? I've never heard "fusion AUs" to describe it before.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
A crossover is when Captain Kirk beams down from the Enterprise and has to help Shinji out in piloting an Eva. A fusion is when Kirk is Shinji.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Crossovers mesh two (or more) universes. Fusions take the characters from one fandom and stick them in another.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
A fusion AU is when you take characters from one Canon A and slot them into Canon B’s setting, making them part of that world, and the main focus is the Canon A characters (for example, Sam Winchester gets his letter and attends Hogwart’s). A crossover AU is when Canon A characters interact with Canon B characters in either or both canon settings with both sets of characters retaining their canon worlds (for example, Buffy Summer goes to England for some Watcher’s Council thing and meets Merlin – there is magic and mayhem). There can be some overlap.

Pacific Rim is a new sandbox and, well, great as the characters were a lot of them are just blank slates, so people seem to be finding it easier to take fave characters from Fandom B and throw them into the Pacific Rim world. it's fun.

People do need to label better, crossovers vs AU's

[Picture is the silhouettes of the cast from the movie "Pacific Rim". It has some text below, saying "We? believed in each other."]

It pisses me off that so many 'crossover' fics for this fandom are 'Fusion Alternate Universes' starring characters from other fandoms as Jaeger pilots. I wanna read about these awesome motherfuckers and their sexy robots rocking the shit out of other universes.

I'm afraid I kind of love the Pacific Rim AU's that have been cropping up all over the place since the movie, if only because I love imagining my OTP's(and brotp's) as Jaeger pilots.

I'm not sure how the AU's would work the other way around, especially with the robots too(and now all that's going through my head atm is GD stomping around Middle-Earth squishing orcs).

SPOILERS

Unless you're a fan of Raleigh and Mako, though, you don't have much to work with if you want to talk about the Drift, piloting, and all that. Considering all the other possible pilots died (or weren't very interesting) I'm not surprised people turn to fusions to explore the concept.

In some fandoms, no matter how awesome the characters are, the setting even more awesome, and the world-building concepts offer fic writers all sorts of things to play with and use to explore their existing favorite characters. I mean, when was the last time you saw a His Dark Materials crossover that involved Lyra, Will, or any of the other characters? (Not that I wouldn't love to see Lee Scoresby pop up in some other fandom apropos of nothing...) And yet there are about a trillion daemon!fusions. It's a thing. It happens. Sentinels and guides, that's another one. Fandom does this. There are still plenty of fics using the actual Pacific Rim characters, so it's not the end of the world. There's an entire kinkmeme, or so I hear. Go, explore.

That's all very well for you, but the only Pacific Rim fics I read are fusions - Hobbit fusions where Kaiju are attacking [a modern] Middle Earth and Middle Earth is fighting back with... you guessed it, Jaegers!

I know one fic that has a Hobbit Jaeger. It has six pilots.
