[Welcome to Night Vale]

Why is it creepy? I mean...it isn't any different from fanart of actors as their characters. You are using their body in your fanarts.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't Nightvale an audio-only canon, though? Drawing the characters to look like their voice actors isn't quite the same as doing so with an animated canon, but it's also not exactly the same as doing fanart of characters from a live-action canon.

I'm not saying that any of the above is necessarily automatically bad/wrong/creepy, but I can easily understand having differing reactions to those.

Why would drawing a character based on the voice actor's body be different from drawing it based on a physical actor's body? (Honest question, I hate how in text everything sounds like I am being antagonistic).

But animated movies often use the voice actors as models for the character designs.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this supposed to be an example of drawing the character like the voice actor? Because they don't look identical. Thin face, long nose, but the drawing has longer hair. I probably wouldn't have identified them as the same, but then I'm lousy with faces.

Anyway, as to your point. On the one hand, I can see how it gets kind of RPF-y. On the other hand, general rule: if you have created a character and don't want people to identify it as an incarnation of you, don't give it your name. ...so does that make it more RPF-y?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk if he gave it his name per se, so much as the creators decided to name it that...But he probably have to give consent.

Either way, I don't really have a problem with it since the VA is totally cool with the fandom, and isn't bothered by the idea of the character being slashed with Carlos.

The one on the right seems to be the common fanon interpretation, not the far less common version that looks like the real Cecil Baldwin.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Longer hair? You probably mean "has hair at all".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Haha, right? And that is why I can't get behind this drawing of Cecil; whatever the character may look like, his obsession with Carlos' hair makes me picture him with thinning/balding/no hair.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
D: please take into account tonal value when choosing contrasting font color vs backgrounds next time please

green vs purple look nice, but you can't have them both have such low tone ahh my eyes

[Picture is a photograph of the narrator of the podcast "Welcome to Night Vale", Cecil Baldwin, and a fanart depiction of him. In the photograph, he is a man with light skin, blue eyes, a shaved head and some beard and mustache. He has a gray shirt open that shows some chest hair and a black vest. In the fanart, he has light skin, short gray-white hair, a third eye on his forehead, and is wearing a light purple shirt, a dark red or purple tie and a black vest. He is wearing large square eyeglasses with no rims and a purple set of headphones.]

I hate it when people depict Cecil Baldwin as he actually looks like in real life in fanart.

Not because I find him ugly or something like that, but because it's creepy. Especially when he's drawn paired with Carlos.

I really hate the Cecil-has-a-third-eye thing.

There, I said it.

Same. I'm also not too fond of 'Cecil is really a minor god!' thing either.

Ugh, freakin' same. Why that's such pervasive fanon I'll never know.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Any reason in particular? /not even in this fandom

If Cecil is anything other than a normal human in very strange circumstances, it weakens both the horror and the comedy of the the setup. This seems obvious to me.

I wouldn't dislike it if it wasn't being copycatted to hell. Fanon is tons of fun until the same thing gets beat into the ground everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the full sleeves thing. Did he mention that and I blanked it or something? (Also not crazy about the third eye thing..)

I was just trying to explain this to my friend last night. Essentially, I'm afraid of the line between character and actor becoming too blurred. Cecil's VA is only his voice, not his actual personality. I love the character Cecil. I don't have any opinion on the actor Cecil (I know basically nothing about him in comparison). I don't want to start accidentally forming opinions on him based on his character.

(Erotic art/fic of real people also really tends to bother me unless they gave explicit permission. Admittedly that's pretty relevant as to why that blurred line makes me uncomfortable.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
But, by that theory, you should dislike a lot of animated stuff since it's pretty common for animated characters to be based on how their VA looks - and not really that uncommon for animators to give the characters gestures that the VAs do while reading lines [or, at least it used to be common in the 90's, and probably isn't entirely gone.]

And, for whatever it's worth, Cecil [the actor] seems really cool with the fandom [and, frankly, is obviously totally cool with Cecil/Carlos which is more than can be said for most fandom's major pairings] because he's interacted with before.

Wow, you know, I'm not normally a fan of The Bald Look, but, uh.

I'd tap that. He is a pretty man.

Dumb question

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is Cecil really Cecil's name? Like, they credit the "Voice of Nightvale" as Cecil Baldwin, but he only speaks in first person, so is Cecil actually the character's name or is it the voice actor's name and fans have just gone with it??

My understanding is that it's both. The character's name is Cecil Baldwin [he does refer to himself in the third person as 'Cecil'], *and* the VA's name is Cecil Baldwin.
