Favourite musicals

What are your favourite musicals, F!S? And do you have favourite versions/cast recordings?

Broadway version of Lion King. Never seen it in real life but it is on my bucket list. I'll probably start sobbing like a baby when it starts and cry during the whole thing.

That is exactly what I did when I got to see it!

Phantom, Spamalot, Rock of Ages (stage version), Sound of Music.

My #1 all-time favourite musical ever: Jesus Christ Superstar. I'm in the camp that thinks the 1973 film is awesome and the 2000 film is an abomination.

#2 all-time favourite: The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

For third place it's a tie between Legally Blonde and The Music Man.

Legally Blonde is chronically underrated. The music for that show is top notch.

I love the Alice Cooper version of King Herod's song.

The 1973 version is awesome, but I have a soft spot for the 2000 version because it is very gay and Judas can't sing. I also have a soft spot for the Indigo Girls version with Amy and Emily as Jesus and Mary.

Les Mis, 25th concert (yes, even Marius)

Pretty much everything Sondheim's been involved in. My favorite right now would be Assassins. If you also like Assassins I will probably love you forever.

Jesus Christ Superstar, PotO, Evita, Miss Saigon.

I love the Rebecca Caine/Colm Wilkinson version of PotO, and I can't tell you for JCS/Evita, except that I prefer the record versions I grew up with.

Favourite ever, probably either Les Mis or Jesus Christ Superstar. I can't decide for the life of me which is my favourite version of Les Mis, but 25th probably just about has the edge, even if I do have to endure Nick Jonas looking constipated for half of it. As for JCS, my favourite version would be the 2000 version because of all that slashy goodness and also because it's the one I grew up with and so am most familiar with.

Right now I'm also kind of obsessed with The Pirate Queen, original Broadway cast, because Hadley Fraser and Stephanie J Block are awesome.

Oh! I almost forgot Next to Normal! I think that's up there with my all time favourites, because it's the only musical to ever actually make me cry.

Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera! I think it surpassed the original by making the Phantom the story's hero, as he was always meant to be! Dark, brooding, and sexy!

Just kidding. I really love Les Mis and Sweeney Todd. For both of those, I don't have one favorite version. For Les Mis, I've seen it on stage, have a cast recording (though I forgot to take down its information and don't know the who/what/when), and seen the 2012 movie, and like aspects from all three. Same for Sweeney Todd - seen it live, seen a filmed stage adaption with Angela Lansbury, and seen the Johnny Depp movie, and they all have their strong/weak points.

Also, can I say Chicago if I've only ever seen the movie? Same for Little Shop of Horrors.

(Also Razia's Shadow. It totally counts!)

My Fair Lady (Audrey Hepburn), Sound of Music, Camelot with Julie Andrews (loved to listen to that as a kid with my mom). Moulin Rouge! Oh and! Yankee Doodle Dandy, with James Cagney. Oh, that man's dancing! :) (I do love the music, too.)

Fiddler on the Roof, because it was the first real musical I ever saw and my mom took me; Newsies; Chicago.

A bit on topic, I'm going to NY for the first time in a couple months and I want to see a show while I'm there, what's the best choice, F!S? I am thinking maybe Wicked... or Newsies... or Matilda... Can't decide :x

I saw Matilda in London and I can't recommend it enough. It's clever and funny, but also really touching. Tim Minchin really gets Dahl, but he also has his own take on child-logic that is very moving. Wicked and Newsies are great too, but in my very personal opinion the Newsies movie is a pretty great version, and the best part of Wicked is captured in the OCR anyway. So my vote in the not-actually-a-democracy of what you should do with your life would be go see Matilda.

OMG so many. I legit cannot pick favorites. But I'll throw out Company, Grey Gardens, Sweeney, Titanic, Nine (but don't get me started on the movie), Pal Joey, Cabaret... Basically if it's not Disney or a jukebox musical, I will probably like it. *snob hat*

I can't remember if I actually ever submitted a fandom secret about my secret and guilty love for the OLC of Martin Guerre or not- [personal profile] dancing_clown's masterlist might know. There's gorgeous choral and dance arrangements (lacking in the touring cast recording; which I actually saw in '99!), one of the best straight-up villain songs written for the stage, and Iain Glenn singing! I actually sort of have a list of musicals that could use a "revisal", a revival that substantially revises the show, and Martin Guerre and Steel Pier top the list.

Les Mis and the Sound of Music are some of my faves. I also really enjoy the stage version of Beauty and the Beast. My high school drama class performed it and it was fantastic!

Other than that, I don't know if I have any other favourite musicals overall, rather I have favourite songs from various musicals.

Repo! The Genetic Opera
(does that count? I've actually not seen many musicals but I quite liked that...)

Hello Dolly! And I can't stand Carol Channing's voice but love love love Streisand's, so movie soundtrack all the way for me.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Also featuring the best 'dance' sequence ever in the brother and the town dudes having their showdown.

The Frog Prince musical (1986): I admit this one has the force of childhood nostalgia behind it. When I was a little girl I remember watchign this as being a magical experience. Doesn't hold up now of course, although I still like the music.

Guys and Dolls. Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, what more do you need? The songs are so fun too.

Hmm. The Sound of Music (Julie Andrews of course,) Anastasia, Mary Poppins, Once More with Feeling (Buffy,) and Man of La Mancha (the Peter O'Toole version.)

The Producers, and my ideal cast is a weird mash-up of the Broadway/movie cast (Lane and Broderick) and the Australian cast (Chloe Dallimore, Bert Newton).

Also, it's not QUITE my favourite, but the Overture for PotO is now playing in my head, so, uh, thanks?
