WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Misfired down below like a dummy- hopefully this one will work] I have no clue where to talk about this because the general Tumblr hivemind frightens me a little, but I digress. There's racewank abound in the Night Vale fandom because Carlos is described as having dark skin and comparatively few people depict him that way in fanart. This is a damn good reason to have ruffled feathers.

But then I somehow found this blog (http://www.carlosisnotwhite.tumblr.com) and I can't help but feel that it's...just rude as hell to the reblogged artists. I'm older now, and all I can see in most of these works is a younger version of myself drawing a dumb picture for my friends at the lunch table and someone walks by and cuts it down out of the blue. I suppose the public forum aspect of Tumblr plays into this, but jeez, it seems like young kids can't even draw a picture of a faceless character from a radio show without getting sideswiped.

Not even sure what I want anyone to say in response to this- my feelings are just confusing me (because POC representation is an issue). Anyone else find this blog a tad off-putting? What do you think?

whoops, I didn't see that you reposted here.
I'll reply again here if Case is deleting that one:

there are actually MULTIPLE blogs devoted to doing this in the WTNV fandom; honestly, it grossed me out so much that I not only left the fandom, I stopped listening to the show altogether.

I can understand being upset because a character is drawn too fair, that's fine, but there is a RIGHT way to do it-- maybe send them an ask saying "hey your character is too white"?-- and a wrong way, which is posting their shit like that and encouraging people to go anon and flood the artists with hate mail (which I have heard of happening in more than one case).

Fuck.
That.

OP. You articulated this much better than I did, and Night Vale is definitely going into my "Love This Thing, Avoid the Fandom" pile (along with Doctor Who, oh boy).

I hope I'm able to eventually forget what a bunch of assholes the fandom is and go back to listening to the show, because I was really enjoying it. Now it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Fucking sjws ruin everything.

It is a little off-putting. Sometimes with scanners and some drawings, it's hard to tell how light/dark something is, especially with quick drawings. And in what episode did they describe Carlos' skin? Could they have drawn/posted something before that or started drawing before they really got into the fandom? I understand the frustration, but it seems a little mean-spirited to reblog art when these people could get hate from the extreme side of tumblr, though the people on this blog are being polite.

It's episode sixteen, about four minutes in. It came out in early February.

DA

Maybe, but a lot of people have only just started listening to it and might not have gotten to episode 16 yet, no matter when it came out.

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it makes me sad. Compare this to star trek: these artists might have no idea it's a thing, might suck at colouring, might have no audience. They have so little power and they're creating art for a small fandom. Keep it in perspective. tumblr is not actually representative or influential in the grand scheme of things. Why not start out nice at least and focus on positive feedback for fanart you think is brown enough.

I was going to write a big long thing but suffice it to say - I agree, and I think it's so fucking weird the way that it seems that everything HAS to become part of the public Internet conversation discourse.

I'm not sure what you mean by the public internet discourse? You mean how things can be taken out of context so easily and used for points scoring?

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
POC representation is definitely an issue, but it is not an issue anyone is going to solve by randomly calling out individuals like bullies. The kind of people that run these sort of blogs only care about being 'right' and scoring points and not about the actual issue at hand.

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
That one is particularly gross. Most of the featured artist CLEARLY do not know how to fucking draw, let alone color anything correctly. It's like they're trying so hard to be the first to 'call out' people they are literally targeting beginners.

I mean, seriously? http://okaysional.tumblr.com/post/59243453449/carlosisnotwhite-the-adam-not-in-hell-i-drew get a life you pathetic motherfucker.

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

I only really have a couple things to say:

1. I can't say I've really seen that many white-looking Carlos pictures, but that could be because I simply don't follow people who've reblogged them, unless you're meaning that "Hispanic" can't qualify as "dark".

2. Carlos' description is honestly really freaking vague. Where I live, "dark" can be used to describe even people who are white - but tend to have olive skin and dark hair/eyes. So it's entirely possible that the people drawing those are going from that perspective since we literally have no guide lines for what he looks like beyond a vague "dark" and "perfect hair".

Before someone comes screaming at me about ~OMG! POC ERASURE!!~ That totally is an issue, and one that should be taken seriously. I'm just pointing out that there really *are* ways to interpret the description of 'dark' where it might not actually *be* erasure on the artist's part. We simply just don't know.

[And yes, for the record, I'd much rather Carlos be Hispanic and have been on the magic school bus

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
that's wow, no. Not okay. Most of the people they're "calling" out haven't even coloured the picture, are drawing generic anime style and are very clearly beginners. Especially since the majority of those the artist obviously TRIED to get Carlos right and kinda of fell short, but they obviously tried.

Not cool blog, not cool at all

also, they keep saying shit like this "he lives in the southwestern united states. his name is carlos"

What the fuck does that even mean, I don't know shit about the skin colour distribution in the SW USA and I've no idea the skin colour associations with Carlos. The only bit that specifies he's dark skinned is where the radio SAYS he's dark skinned. This latter bits don't mean shit if you're not familiar with the name or...I'm guess SW USA is filled with black people idk.

Point is, that blog is trying way too hard to be SJW.

Southwestern USA has a higher Hispanic population, I think is the idea. Though isn't Carlos not from around there so that kind of has jack all to do with anything???¿¿¿¿¿??

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. He moved there. He's a transplant.

And the people who go SJWer on this are being a big ignorant themselves assuming that Carlos = Hispanic = automatically indigenous Americas brown.

But Carlos can be any type of Hispanic that is out there, which means, he can look like anything. From the blond, blued looking Spaniards of Northern Spain to the Afro-Caribbean from The Dominican Republic.

Hell, for all we know. Carlos may not even be Hispanic. He could very well be Filipino.

Actually, SW US has a really large Hispanic population, which isn't surprising given it's location and history [technically south-central too, since Texas tends that way as well, and shares the history.]

In fairness, 'dark' is a vague term that can be applied to a *lot* of groups of people.

Still browsing and getting irritated because beginniner artists

COME ON, the black is a light grey, they're using some kind of water colour but guess it's not black enough for the blog? They're saying Carlos is not white on blogs where no, no the person hasn't drawn him as white so what on earth are you getting it?

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn. On the one hand there was this thing in my (small) fandom where the artist drew brown & black people in anime style, one of whom is VERY CLEARLY BLACK, but this was after they said they were using pics from canon for inspiration.

then they flounced when people called them out (not, I admit, politely) on it, and said ~that was their STYLE, MMKAY?!~ and got really defensive. I've been called out before and I was pissed off, but I saw their point. I still don't agree, but I apologised and was willing to learn.

On the other hand, it is arseholish behaviour.

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
having been personally "called out" on one of those blogs because the shade of brown I used for Carlos was apparently not brown enough, I feel vindicated by the comments here. Thank god not everyone in the fandom is as big an asshole as these guys.

Re: WTnV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
While I understand their frustration--holy shit, what an asshole! Some of those people are obviously drawing hispanic Carlos and some of them look to be kids or at least at that art level.
