Dogs. I don't think it's that weird or unusual, but to hear some dog owners talk it's the most ridiculous phobia in the world. /bitter

Yeah...though I've found that pointing out that having had a dog lunge for your throat when you were 7 generally shuts them up - or at least makes them a little less dismissive as a whole [though, of course, ~their's would never~].

That might be partially because of breed-specific hatred (which is generally illogical, as the most "aggressive" breed of the day generally corresponds to social/cultural norms), and also the natural tendency for people to defend what they know and like and to get upset when they encounter detractors.

That said, it sucks that your fear gets dismissed, because it's absolutely valid. Some people train their dogs to attack, and some dogs wind up learning to attack because they've developed in hostile environments.

I can honestly say that for me it has nothing to do with breed. I'm afraid of all dogs, no matter their size/reputation/anything. There is one breed (golden retriever?) of which I'm slightly less terrified due to a really really harmless dog in our neighbourhood when I was growing up (really harmless - I remember that a friend once accidentally poked him in the eye while petting him and he didn't do more than blink), but I'm still afraid.

I get that it's hard to comprehend that someone might be terrified of what you consider a harmless and beloved pet, but good god, some dow-owners are such condescending assholes about this. I've lost count of the number of people who keep talking at me trying to convince me of how harmless their dog is and really, there's no reason to be ~afraid~, like if I just listened to reason I'd see the light, or whatever.

That said, there are also dog-owners that are really awesome and accept that I'm not afraid just to spite them. Ironically those are also the ones that have the most well-behaved/trained dogs, it seems.

I apologize if I came across as saying that you should only be afraid of certain dogs. I mostly brought up the breed thing to explain why some people might not get where you're coming from.

People should respect your fears, and not let their personal feelings get in the way.

Oh, no no, you didn't come across like that, it's just something I hear a lot - no need to be afraid, it's a gentle breed/the dog's so small/the breed just has a bad reputation/etc. Some people get that all that doesn't matter to me, but some aren't as understanding. (You'd be surprised how many people make sympathetic noises when you're scared of big breeds, but laugh at you when the dog in question is less than knee high.)

I try to be really considerate of people's phobias and would never dismiss them. I get so angry when people talk about phobias like they're ridiculous and just need to get over them. That's not how phobias work. I think a lot of people don't understand the difference between nervousness, fear, and a genuine phobia.

UGH ME TOO

My phobia of dogs developed when I was too young to really make sense of what was happening (I was about 2 or 3, and being chased by a puppy. I was an easily scared child). A lot of my friends and family own dogs, and they all talk about how friendly dogs are and I feel like such a wuss when I cower away from them.

I'm also bitter because I'm very much a cat person, and cats have a far worse rep than dogs do, for no reason. Everyone thinks all cats are aloof, and will attack at the slightest provocation. But the best pet I ever owned was a cat. Once she warmed up to you, she was so affectionate and calming, and she was never aggressive. Doubly bitter because when my family moved into a rental property, the landlord let us keep our dog, but not said cat.

I do like dogs, but I also like cats (I fucking have three of them), and that attitude bothers me to no end.

Cats are incredibly affectionate -- it's just that they're naturally more fearful of humans and they tend to have higher standards regarding whom they love. They also aren't more aggressive than dogs; they'll defend when they feel threatened, but dogs will, as well.

One of my childhood friends got a dog when we were around twelve, and she would just not accept or understand why I didn't want to visit her anymore. The one time she managed to talk me into visiting and sleeping over I was too terrified to even go to the bathroom because the dog would be standing on the other side of her bedroom door wanting to be let in. And then she actually let it in despite my telling her that I didn't want to be in the same room as the dog.

I couldn't even sleep because I was afraid that she'd let the dog in at night, like she'd do with her cats even though she knew that I didn't like that.

(She's also the reason why I'm slightly apprehensive about cats. It's not as bad as the dog phobia, but I absolutely do not want them anywhere near me when I'm sleeping. Which I repeatedly told my friend and she promised me she wouldn't let the cats in, only for me to be woken up by a cat walking over the bed. That said, it sucks that the landlord didn't let you keep the cat. Maybe it's because I'm neither a dog nor a cat person, but it seems kind of silly to me to allow one and not the other. And why cats wouldn't rather be the allowed pets, but that might be the phobia talking.)

It's not - it normally *is* cats being allowed instead of dogs if they only let people have one or the other [at least, where I live].

With my landlord it was cats and dogs that weren't allowed, he had no problem with the snakes and at one point I had 28 of them in the bedsit (to be fair 13 of them were babies courtesy of my two female and one male cornsnakes and most of the snakes were cornsnake size or smaller)
